President’s Message

The calendar says Spring is here; it is just difficult to

find. I’m ready for Spring and so is the Mercedes.

Spring means a Tech Session at Black Forest and a

Rallye in June. This year we are also going to assist at

the Channel 10/36 Auction.

Bob Turznik did a great job on the bus trip to the

Chicago Auto Show; he said most of the seats were

filled by our members and there were folks on the wait-

ing list. That says Bob did a good job, and it says this

is an event you enjoy.

Although I was unable to make the Fish Fry, my wife

went and tells me it was an enjoyable event in lousy

weather for around 26 folks. Good job, Frank.

And for those of you who enjoy the more demanding

attention of a rallye, some of the couples from She-

boygan are hosting the Spring/Summer rallye in late

June.

Last year JoAnne and Nancy hosted a Starry Nights

Concert at the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center in

Brookfield. We had such a good time, that they’re

doing it again on June 28. After a thrilling debut per-

formance last season, the Wilson Center’s Starry Nights

Orchestra returns with a patriotic program of American

music under the stars. You don’t want to miss it!

Last year Jim Pittelkow and Jerry Zajicek tried to put

together a trip to Road America. The only interest we

got was from a new member. This year Bruce

Hamilton published a survey of interest in our last

Badger Star. He did not get much response. On

various occasions we have heard that a number of you

are interested in racing. Please let Bruce or Jim know

now what racing interests you.

Mark your calendars with the drive to the Dells (Chula

Vista), the Fall Tech Session, and the Fall Rallye and

Annual Meeting. We are working on giving you more

advance notice of coming events.

Hope to see you soon at one of our events with sun

glasses and short-sleeved shirts.

President

An Unusually Eventful Trip to the 2013 Chicago Auto Show

Despite the weather forecast of “freezing rain” for the Sunday morning of our bus trip to the Chicago Auto Show, the roads were calm with an occasional light rain at almost 40 degrees (well above freezing). Once again we had a full bus with a few late comers that were not able to join us because we were sold out for this club event.

For those who have not attended the Chicago Auto Show recently, it utilizes more than 1 million square feet of the McCormick Place complex. McCormick Place offers a total of 2.7 million square feet of exhibit. The event runs for 10 days and is billed as the largest auto show in the country.

Tickets for the show are provided by the Chicago zone office of Mercedes Benz and that makes our trip conven-ient and reasonable. By chartering a bus we miss the tolls & parking issues, and this year we watched a video of “the 125 year history of Mercedes Benz” while others fought the Chicago downtown traffic. The DVD was cour-tesy of club member Wim van den Berg.

At the show some of us met up with members of the Chicago Chapter of the M-B club. We naturally met up in the VIP Mercedes Hospitality area behind the Mercedes display on the show floor. This VIP area is available to any Mercedes owner by just showing your key to get in. We discussed some upcoming events that both WI & IL chapters can participate in for the coming months. Watch the upcoming calendar of events for possible M-B events at the Indianapolis race track in May, and at the Wisconsin Dells in September.

One unusual thing that happened this year occurred just north of Racine on our trip back to Milwaukee. Our bus developed engine & transmission issues. So we limped to the Lamers bus depot near College Avenue on the south side of town and changed buses. Because of the professionalism of our driver we missed an accident gridlock on the ex-pressway, and we changed busses inside the shelter of a building into a warm re-placement bus. Next year we might offer this side trip as an option to the trip … just kidding.

Welcome to any and all MBCA members. This Observation and Distance Rallye will start in Sheboygan and end in

Manitowoc after having traveled scenic roads in between. You will be judged on your ability to observe and record

clues along the route. To a lesser degree, you will be judged on your ability to get the correct distance for the rallye, on

whether you exceed the allotted time limit and how much fun you’re having (no if’s, ands or buts about it). Trophies

will be awarded for the top three scoring teams. Additionally the Roberta M. Schmidt Memorial Traveling Trophy will

be awarded for the first place team (if they are MBCA members from the Wisconsin Section). Come for the rallye, the

Menards in Manitowoc which is located off of I43 on Hwy 151. The dinner site will have a cash bar available for thirsty

September Event in the Wisconsin Dells

A multi-day event is in the planning stages for a weekend in September starting on a Friday and ending on a Sun-day. It will be based at the Chula Vista Resort in the Dells. Being planned is an all German Car Event.

The weekend will be designed by us to offer not just a car experience, but a Dells resort experience as well. Being arranged are the following optional activities: a small all German Car Show, a gimmick Rallye, a countryside wine tour, and possible Track Time on the 1/3 mile auto race track nearby so we can drive on the track on a timed or untimed lap course.

Aside from the driving activities, there are many other areas of interest in the area that can excite the other family mem-bers. Because of a special relationship the Mercedes Benz club has with the owners of the Chula Vista Resort, we will have the place to ourselves at this time of year.

Besides tourist events, the Dells event offers a friendly com-petition between various German Car Clubs at one of their many Go-Cart tracks. This can be an exciting and fun event. Stay tuned for further developments.
