Resolutions RevisitedSo how are your New Year’s resolutions coming along? Still on the wagon or

having a tough time? Spring is a good time to look back and re-evaluate yourgoals. Perhaps you already met your goal and have moved on to the next one.Maybe you’re struggling a bit and need some motivation. Most likely, it’s a bit ofboth! One of my goals this year was to eat healthier and consume less processedfood. This is NOT easy. It takes more time in the kitchen, extra planning, andoften, extra trips to the grocery store (because I didn’t plan very well!). Am I stillon course? Well, I’m doing better than I did in 2013, but I know there is muchmore I can do. I’m trying to maintain a healthy attitude on this one becauseanything is better than nothing and even though I’m not sprinting, I am movingin the right direction. So give yourself some credit for any effort toward yourgoal and remind yourself why that goal was important in the first place. Often, just remembering why you wanted to do something in the first place is the motivatoryou need to get back on track. I know you can do it!

Spring ArtworkOne of my kids’ favorite rites of spring is heading back outside for playtime.

Bikes, scooters, playsets, dirt(!). . .and sidewalk chalk! Some of the best artwork inthe neighborhood can be found on the sidewalks and driveways this time of year!Sidewalk chalk is relatively cheap to buy, but it’s also really fun to make. Kids ofall ages can be creative with it and you can use any type of mold you like. Whipup a batch with the kids and watch their creative juices flow. For my son, watchingthe chemical reaction of simple ingredients combining to make something familiaris half the fun. Being able to use it is the icing on the cake!

Leprechaun LoveSt. Patrick’s Day falls on March 17th every year and is

traditionally an adult holiday with much celebrating andenjoying the luck ‘o the Irish! Green beer and corned beefand cabbage are traditional St. Patrick’s Day fare. However,it’s fun to include the kids on such a fun holiday. Who says milkcan’t be green? Leprechauns have turned all sorts of things greenat our house on occasion. Milk, pancakes, and even mashed potatoes– these are all leprechaun favorites. The leprechauns who havevisited us usually leave us a bit of mischief, too. Toothpaste out ofthe tube, toys strewn across the family room, and bites out ofsandwiches have surprised us on this silliest of holidays. However you celebrate, include the youngest of the family in the revelry. Everyone likes to have fun!

Kool-Aid Egg DyeNot that this has ever happened to me (grin), but picture the hard-boiled eggs

ready to dye, the counter covered with paper and the kids chompingat the bit. Now picture Mom looking everywhere for that egg

dye kit she bought weeks ago. Familiar? Kool-aid to therescue! If this happens to you, pull a few packets of Kool-Aid unsweetened mix out of the cabinet and you’re good togo. One packet of mix and 2/3 c. water makes awesome eggdye! One note: lemonade needs a shot of orange to make ita nice yellow color and grape needs a shot of berry blue tokeep it from being gray. These little life savers are often 5/$1so it’s a cheap craft on a rainy day, too. Colored eggs aren’tjust for Easter. Have fun any day!

Good DealsDollar stores are a treasure trove if you know what you’re looking

for! More than likely, you’ve stopped in to pick up something andbeen roped in to a cart full of items, some of which turned out to bebetter buys than others. Here are a few things you don’t want to buy

    © Susan Tipsord 2014

$anywhere else: 1. Seasonal items are almost always half the price of drugstore or big box store prices. 2. Greeting cards. These may not be the finestcardstock, but at 20-30% of the price of finer brands, they will be welcomedby the recipient all the same. 3. Aluminum pans are often 3-5/$1, dependingon size. Never take one of your nice pans to a potluck again. Disposablesare always welcome and you haven’t lost a favorite! 4. Food storage containers.Plastic is plastic! AND, if it doesn’t come home in the lunch box, you haven’tlost an expensive container. As always, shop wisely and even if you make apoor choice once in a while, you haven’t lost the farm!

Deviled Egg DipLooking for a low carb appetizer for Easter or any spring get-together? Deviled

Egg Dip is a winner every time. Not only does it use ingredients you probablyhave on hand, but it is also a colorful addition to any table, will please mostvegetarians, and doesn’t include cheese or sour cream – prime appetizer ingredients! This recipe can be made the day before and refrigerated until ready to serve. It’salso very adaptable to your taste. Feel free to add your own twist!

1 dozen large hard-boiled eggs2 T. vinegar (white or apple cider)1 c. mayonnaise (Duke’s is my favorite)1 T. mustardsalt, pepper, celery saltchopped scallions (opt.)

Peel and half eggs lengthwise. Remove all yolks. Chop half the egg whites andreserve. Place all yolks, remaining whites, vinegar, mayonnaise, mustard andseasonings of your choice in food processor. Process until smooth. Removefrom processor bowl and stir into reserved chopped egg whites. Add choppedscallions if using. Refrigerate at least an hour or up to a day. When ready toserve, sprinkle with paprika if desired. Serve with celery sticks, carrot sticks andcrackers.

    About The Cover Artist

Leslie BeckRaised in eastern Washington State, Leslie was surrounded by art and

creativity from the very beginning. As the granddaughter of a Norwegian furniture designer/cabinet maker, Leslie was immersed in art throughout her childhood. Encouraged by her artistic parents, she found herself fascinated by the interface of colors and textures and began sewing at age 5. Now, using techniques as varied as acrylics, watercolor, and computer imaging, Leslie’s designs bring art to life by combining the fibers of life with the textures of nature into a mosaic of original ideas.

Leslie’s work has garnered industry accolades as well as phenomenal retail success. In 1996, one of Leslie’s designs won her the coveted and prestigious annual Tommy Award bestowed by the American Printed Fabrics Council in recognition of excellence. Since then, her designs have enjoyed several more Tommy nominations. Such recognition from fellow artists has given Leslie and her art unparalleled exposure and attention both within the United States and internationally. Leslie is a frequent trade show exhibitor at such venues as The Licensing Show and The International Quilt Market. She has won 10 awards for her booth designs. Leslie has been a featured artist in many popular paintings, crafting, and quilting magazines such as American Patchwork and Quilting, The Quilter, Better Homes and Gardens, and Women’s Day.

Further strengthening Leslie is her partnership with Linda McDonald Inc, a licensing firm, located in Charlotte, NC (704) 370-0057, specializing in brand development and marketing. They are leading a major expansion program for Leslie’s popular, diversified art style with the goal of establishing Leslie as a complete decorating resource for the entire home in a branded merchandising program.
