A Note from The Director October 2016
We had a wonderful 40th birthday celebra<on the last week of September! The children greatly enjoyed “Mother Goose is on the Loose” and the Kona Ice treat provided by the Parent’s Club. The week was filled with fun in the classrooms, too. Children read books about birthdays, counted 40 candles, made birthday crowns, added their artwork to bulle<n boards and bu*erflies, and engaged in many addi<onal ac<vi<es to celebrate our 40th birthday. Be sure to ask your child about his/her favorite birthday ac<vity from the week. It was a fun celebra<on for sure! The month of October will be filled with many fun fall ac<vi<es. Please be sure to check your child’s bag or classroom box for notes and reminders about all the events that will take place this month. If you have any ques<ons about upcoming ac<vi<es, please be sure to talk with your child’s teacher or refer to your classroom newsle*er. We are looking forward to another exci<ng month at ICDC! Lastly, I am happy to announce that we have hired a school nurse and two subs<tute nurses. Ms. Shawna Stefaniak will join our staff as our school nurse, and Ms. Jeannie Le and Ms. Rina Seidel will be subs<tute nurses for us. We are so excited to welcome all three nurses to our staff! Thank you for sharing your precious children with us! I wish you all a happy fall!!! Kindest regards, Lisa Whi*le, Director
Dear ICDC Families, We have had a wonderful start to the school year. It is exci<ng to see the children ge[ng se*led in their new classrooms and making new friends. Many of our classes have spent <me learning about families this past month, and most recently, focused their classroom experiences around birthdays. Interfaith Child Development Center began in 1976. For the last 40 years, we have been a part of The Woodlands community. What an honor it has been to provide an early childhood educa<on to the hundreds of children who have entered our doors! We strive to con<nuously improve upon our curriculum and programs to meet the needs of our children and families. We are so apprecia<ve of the support you give and for partnering with us each day so that we can provide the best early childhood experience possible for your child.

Health & Safety The new school year has go*en off to a great start, and the first month has flown by! The safety of the children is our number one priority. With that in mind, we would like to review ICDC policies regarding car line and parking lot safety.
Parking Lot Safety • When you bring your child to school and walk your child to class, please do
not park directly in front of the door to the building. Parking there blocks other cars and prevents our car line from running smoothly.
• Please do not park in the red curbed areas. This is the fire lane and we need to keep this clear as a safety precau<on. Also we can be fined if cars are found parked in these areas.
• Children may not be lea una*ended in the car while you come into the building to pick up your child.
Car Line Policies and Safety
• Display the orange sign with your child’s name and classroom number on your dashboard un<l your child is in your vehicle. This helps both Debbie Lauducci and our teachers loading children in the cars. If you have lost your carline sign or need another one, please see Daneli at the front desk. She will be happy to make another one for you.
• Our car line is a “No Passing” zone. Please wait for the car in front of you to move before you proceed forward.
• Please be sure to have your car in park or have the engine turned off when teachers are either taking your child out of the car in the morning or pu[ng your child in the car in the aaernoon.
• In Texas, all children under the age of eight must be secured in the appropriate child safety seat unless the child is more than 4’9” tall. We cannot place any child into a car that does not have a car seat or booster seat for that child.
Thank you so much for your con/nued support in keeping ICDC a safe
environment for our children to learn and grow!

Science Lab News Debbie Lauducci, Assistant Director
Fall arrives in the Science Lab this month with lots of Fall themed ac<vi<es! Aaer reading Who Sank the Boat? children will look at walnuts, acorns, small pumpkins, and pinecones. They will make predic<ons about which ones will sink and which ones will float. Then they will have the chance to put their objects in the water to see if their predic<ons are correct. Fun!! Another ac<vity will be measuring and weighing pumpkins, squash, and gourds. Children will learn the parts of a pumpkin and read books about apples and pumpkins. Fall is fun!
Library Corner
October is such a busy month here at ICDC! In the library, we will focus on pumpkins and apples and Fall holidays. We will also read some special stories about fire trucks! The children at ICDC will either be visi<ng the fire sta<on (our 4’s classes) or the fire trucks will visit them right here at school (the 1’s, 2’s, and 3’s classes). Some of the books they will be reading are: Scaredy Cat, Splat! by Rob Sco*on Firehouse by Mark Teague It’s Pumpkin Day, Mouse by Laura Numeroff At the Firehouse by Anne Rockwell Apples and Pumpkins by Anne Rockwell Fire Fighters by Dee Ready Go Away Big Green Monster by Ed Emberly Find a Pumpkin by Tad Hills

Preschool Psychology Corner
Grandma’s Rule By Anise Flowers, Ph.D.
In behavior management, “Grandma’s Rule” refers to making one experience dependent on the performance of another behavior. For example, “if you eat your dinner, you can have dessert.” Grandma’s Rule can oaen be a natural, logical consequence, as in the dessert example. With very young children, the second behavior should occur close in <me to the first. These con<ngencies can be used throughout the day with a preschool age child. Look for things that you need your child to do and look for the ac<vi<es that he/she likes to do – and then link them together. “If you eat your lunch, you can have a piggy ride to your bed for nap.” “Aaer you stay in bed for your nap, you can have some computer <me.” “If you get ready for bed now (or get out of the bathtub etc.), we will have <me to read a story.” “If you get dressed for school and brush your teeth, you will have 10 minutes to play with your toys.” My son likes to take one of his trucks to bed with him at night. Then, like most kids, he finds reasons to get up and stall bed<me. So we have a rule: “If you stay in your bed, you can keep your toy.” The key to Grandma’s Rule is consistent follow through. One night I had to take away a toy at bed<me aaer he came out of his room a couple of <mes. Naturally, much crying and howling ensued! But on subsequent nights, he earned his privilege to hold a toy as he driaed off to Neverland. Some<mes, the simple ideas of Grandma work best.

Hello, my name is Toby Cambron and it is a pleasure to meet you all. Since 2003, I've been teaching the school age children in the aaer school program here. Houston born and raised, my family has lived in The Woodlands since 1993. Picturesque scenes of kids
playing outside, people riding bikes on the trails, reading under a tree and feeding the ducks are real features one will find surveying this most perfect community. As an ar<st and nature lover, living here is almost paradise. I am happy to report I will be gradua<ng this fall from Sam Houston State University with my degree in teaching – Go Bearkats! Bringing the arts to the young people here
has been a very rewarding journey and I hope to con<nue bringing the arts and classical literature into the lives of young people here for many years to come. It has been my pleasure to teach here at Interfaith and an
honor to meet you all.
