    a not-so happy meal

    joemar m. rivera

    twas an afternoon date

    with my hands solderedon the greasy Mcdo fries;

    greedy lips kissed by

    Heinz ketchup

    yearning, waiting

    for a confidante to

    satisfy a bloated ego

    of cholesterol and so

    whatever.

    you came 15 minutes

    after five in the dot

    lost into nothingness

    with your right hand holding

    a red box of somewhat

    surprise; hopes up

    that youll open a disclosure

    of either happiness or otherwise.

    twas the latter.

two blocks beside me, you sat

    earphones parted

    from your left ear, mumbling

    some lines of unknown

    country singer from the metro

    too masochistic for souls

    gripping for the universe

    of stone cold hearts.

you smirked, i faked a laugh

    a song of pity

humming nothing but a chorus of

    high pitched lyrics:

Together lets give it a try

Dont let it pass us by.

    and when the song ended

    i remembered suddenly

that the girl who sattwo blocks beside me

the one holding the red box

    of surprise looked the same

as the girl who once shared

    the greasy Mcdo fries

    I am now eating alone.

this is not a story of serendipity,

    after all.
