PREFACE

The world today is fast changing as new businesses are emerging replacing

the old. In the new millennium, there is growing unease amongst the people

about their future. Many countries are experiencing chronic unemployment, a

persistent deficit balance of payment and deteriorating purchasing power.

Like other businesses, we must enrich our knowledge and the dynamics of

international Shipping and the shipping tycoons. No country is self-sufficient

with her requirements of like; food, medicine, technology etc. She is to import

those she does not produce and export those she produces in abundance.

These imports and exports normally are carried by Ships, Tankers and Barges

approximately 90% of the world trade. The rest 10% of the merchandize are

carried by Airfreight and Roadways. Various countries have been trying to

increase the transportation facilities by global multimodal transport system

and also enlarging their road links with neighboring countries. But the

necessity of Sea-born Trade will never decline, rather it is bound to expand

leaps and bounds.

At present there are around 50,000 various types of Merchant Ships, Tankers and

Barges engaged in trading worldwide, transporting every kind of cargos. These

Vessels are registered in over 150 nations, and manned by over one million

seafarers belonging to almost every country of the world.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

It is a great pleasure enabling me for completing my internship

job with a well reported private organization (Shipping Agent of

integrated maritime logistics support Contractors including

Customs Clearing, Forwarding services and Mega Heavy Duty

Equipment suppliers) like in I.B.S. Associates, Aziz Chamber, 6

Jubilee Road, Chittagong. Through my practical exposure with

this organization was only two months. It has provided me a wide

range of scope and facilities to observe the procedures of

shipping functions especially focusing on foreign Shipping

Agencies’ operation systems.

After successful completion of the practical orientation in IBS

Associates, I have come to know a lot of things such as how a

Shipping and C&F Agents deals with their customers; how they

achieve foreign Contract specially Bangladesh Oil & Gas

Exploration & Development under the Ministry of oil, Gas and

Mineral Resources Corporation (Petrobangla) and how they work

with International Energy Conglomerates like; Cairn Energy

Exploration (Bangladesh) Limited, Chevron Bangladesh Block

12,13 &14 Limited, Tullow Bangladesh Limited, Total E & P

Bangladesh, currently operating in Bangladesh under

Bangladesh Petroleum Act 1974 opens the opportunities for

international petroleum industry to explore develop and produce

oil and gas under Production Sharing Contract (PSC). Mode of

fund mobilization for their various investment projects, banking

operations, mode of communications with both their Principals

and local High Command, dedication of their High Command to

their organizational goals under Corporate Culture due to,

Corporate Social Responsibility rendered by their employers.

The study covers different aspects of Project Handled and

practical mode of operations both; Offshore and Onshore

operations by IBS Associates (IBSA) including introduction, history

of the organization, divisions of IBSA, management hierarchy of

these divisions, marketing aspects of IBSA, international aspects

of IBSA, financial aspects of IBSA, HSE and ISO 9001:2000

compatible aspects etc.,

INTRODUCTION OF THE STUDY

The concluding project of the MBA course is to prepare a

dissertation or internship report. For this purpose I opted IBSA

for4 preparation of internship report. The world today has

become a rapidly dynamic and robust entity. None in this

competitive arena will be successful unless he or she is linked

with practical orientation. In this respect internship program

provides a ray of hope in connecting the theoretical knowledge to

the practical knowledge we had earlier acquired.

Transportation investments in developing countries and regions

are made mainly on the basis of their impact on the development

of the area or country. Given that governments normally provide

and maintain the basic facilities such as Roads and Highways,

Seaports and Airports, the Taxpayers rather than the Users pay

the cost of transportation. The question is why should these

facilities be paid for by the Society? or how should these be

financially sustained?

Economic development is not a deterministic process, and the

singling out of a single component of capital formation as a

causal agent is an oversimplification. The process of development

is a complex interaction between human and material resources

with investment in transportation providing a possibility for

developing other resources. It has also been pointed out that

transportation improvements may release working capital which

Page 11: A Multi-Modal Transportation & Logistics

can be used more productivity elsewhere, given that there are

suitable productive out-lets.

OBJECTIVE OF THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM:

The main objective of the Internship program under MBA courses provided by

University of Science & Technology Chittagong (USTC) is to obtain practical

knowledge and related jobs to make the students prepared for their bright career. In

addition to that the objectives of internship program in reputed Shipping, Logistics,

Clearing & Forwarding Agencies provides a major practical knowledge of the

Bangladesh energy sector i.e. Oil & Gas Exploration, Development and Distribution in

the Offshore and Onshore in the various Petrobangla Blocks. I.B.S Associates

dealings are as follows:

1. To familiarize with different functional areas of foreign Ship Handling (Marine

& Logistics Support).

2. To acquire knowledge on Shipping, Clearing & Forwarding Agency.

3. To acquire the organizational behavior patterns in discharging responsibility

as an executive.

4. To gather practical knowledge on the systems, procedures and techniques

used in Multi-Module transport industries.

5. For exposures the interaction between various stakeholders namely;

marketing, finance, other functional departments in the organization, also

with various interest groups including the customers, suppliers, middle-men,

financial bodies and various Statutory Agencies.

6. To learn the process of formulating objectives, policies, programs and their

implementation day to day in the organization.

7. To learn Project Materials procurement and Handling specially Oil and Gas

field related aspects.

8. To gather knowledge of Project Works Accounting Mode and Banking

procedure including Ship’s disbursement and foreign remittance issues.

9. To familiarize with merchandising other related jobs in mini and mega

Projects.

Page 12: A Multi-Modal Transportation & Logistics

10. To gather knowledge about HS&E hazardous materials handling in explosives

and dangerous goods in the Oil and Gas Projects.

11. To find out the entire organizational structure.

12. To understand the services offered and to understand the mechanism of the

services available.

13. Another objective was to get exposure of the real life work and idea of how is

like working for an organization in gaining experience which will help me in

my future practical life.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY.This Report covers position in a reputed Shipping, Logistics, Clearing & Forwarding Agency providing a major practical knowledge of the Bangladesh energy sector i.e. Oil & Gas Exploration, Development and Distribution in the Offshore and Onshore in the various Petrobangla Blocks. I.B.S Associates, Aziz chamber, 6 Jubilee road, Chittagong focuses on the overview of background, management and organizational structure, functions, foreign trade business, Ship handling and Chandelling, Ship’s disbursement, clearing and forwarding formalities & Heavy equipment services in local and multinational project, general service organizational activities, Project estimation, Accounting Mode, local & foreign Banking procedures and foreign remittances issues.

While preparing the internship report I discussed with the shipping and C&F

executives, HS&E expert, vendors and clients of IBSA and then I came to know

how they do their job. This report helped me to practical knowledge about

Shipping, Transportation and Logistics sector.

METHODOLOGY OF THE STUDY

The present study is based on theoretical analysis. Collected data and

information were tabulated, processed and analyzed critically in order to

make the program more informative, fruitful and purposeful one. For

preparing this report data have been collected from both Primary and

Secondary sources.

(1) Primary Data:

Primary data were collected through conversation; direct question and

observation were formed in this connection. I am grateful to the following

Page 13: A Multi-Modal Transportation & Logistics

Executive of the I.B.S Associates, Aziz Chamber 6 Jubilee Road, Chittagong,

for their nice cooperation in getting primary data:

Mr. Sal Y Jamal (Head of Correspondence).

Mr. A.T.M Tofiq Ahmeb (Management Representative).

Mr. Syed Mohammed Musa (S.M & Head of Shipping).

Mr. Mr. Gopal Das (Manager HR).

Mr. Mohammed Jaglul Islam (Finance & Accounts).

Mr. MD. Anower Hossain (Manager HS&E).

Mr. MD. Abu Taher (Team Leader, Rigger).

Mr. Mr. Babul Gosh (Foreman, Equipment).

(2) Secondary Data:

I have collected my secondary Data from I.B.S Associates’s Web Site,

publications, Petrobangla Annul Report 2007, Bangladesh Shipping Agents

Association Report, C&F Agents Report, Shipping Executive Agents

Association Report, different books, circular, memorandum, and documents

and records of the IBSA.

LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

- Best efforts have been made to make the report analytical, informative in

comprehensive one. In spite of much better environment, I had to face

various limitations those were uncontrollable.

- Bank covers a wide area. By this limited time it was not possible for me to

know the every activities of the Bank. I just observed what the bankers were

doing and how. So, consequence is obvious that this report may seem to

some extent a theoretical one.

Page 14: A Multi-Modal Transportation & Logistics

- Many procedural matters were written from own observation, which may

also vary from person to person.

- The study was not done very successfully due to officer's busyness.

-

LIMITATION OF THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM:

Although the opportunity of Internship program is a great one for me to

acquire practical knowledge and other related jobs and getting opportunity of

carrying out this program in an organization like Choice Group, there were

also some limitations in this regard .Out of various limitations the followings

are worth mentioning:

The allocated time (8 weeks) was not sufficient enough to get involved with

the vast and complex process under different functional areas of garments

industries.

Most of the time of my internship period I had to work in P&D and Store

department that may not provide the total scenario of the garment operation.

Another Limitation was that I was not given any guide from the organization

who would monitor my activities and provide support.

The persons involved in each section remain always busy with work so

getting their support was quite difficult there.

Another problem is the unavailability of various data regarding the

organizations total export, which might help me in getting a clear picture of

performance in comparison with total industry.

Unavailability of various secondary data and publications on different

functional areas of garments industries, which might help me in preparing a

good internship report.

INTRODUCTION:

Transport and Economic Development:

In order to analyze and discuss the incidence of transport on competitiveness

and economic development, it is necessary to understand some basic issues

and problems related to international trade. Although the individual shipper

will probably not regard questions of international trade as crucial for his

daily business, an introduction to the driving forces behind ocean transport

and to problems such as exchange rates, customs, tariffs and quotas is

required for a proper understanding of the shipping industry. Some aspects of

transport and economic development are dealt with here.

Export earnings are regarded as important for developing countries since

revenues from exports could be used to purchase capital equipment and

other goods from abroad that are required for industrialization and

production.

At least from a theoretical point of view, there may be other benefits from

international trade which have important long term consequences: Larger

markets would result in economics of scale in production and higher returns;

commercial interaction and communication with more advances would

provide learning effects, improvement of human resources. Several recent

empirical studies support the proposition between growth in exports and the

goods and services produced in the economy in a given period.

It should be noted that the effect of freight costs are similar to those of

tariffs, in the sense that they increase the landed price of foreign goods and

thereby reduce the level of demand for these products. Studies show that the

overall degree of production caused by international transport costs than

those of their competitors. Other studies from other areas seem to confirm

this observation. Three possible reasons for this are proposed.

Page 16: A Multi-Modal Transportation & Logistics

Remoteness involves high costs because of the transport distances involved.

This disadvantage may be compounded by a combination of other

unfavorable factors such as small trade volumes, or small consignments and

requirements for specialized shipping (e.g.: reefer). Unbalanced trade may

aggravate the disadvantage.

Inefficiencies may be found in packaging, inland transport, port handling,

ships operations etc.

The causality between transport causes economic growth is supported by a

number of studies. In sprite of this, the postulate that improved transport

causes economic development has been questioned. The more modest

viewpoint has been offered that an adequate transport system is a necessary

condition of economic growth but will not by itself cause such growth.

One interesting aspect of these pretties to technological change in ocean

shipping. For example: The unitization development, particularly in

containers, together with specialization in bulk carriage, creates heavy

demand for new port investment. But who reaps the benefits from these

investments? If the port investment result in a faster turn-around for the

ships, carriers’ cost decrease and these benefits should be passed on in the

from of lower freight rates. But lower freight rates tend to accrue to all

shippers on a trade routh that may include many ports and countries. These

shippers who use the improved port may not benefit sufficiently to justify the

investment. This raises the issue of how to structure port charges so that the

benefits of improvement accrue to the improving port or country.

Sea Port:

Chittagong is the premier port of Bangladesh, located 15km away from the

open sea. The port is situated on the right bank of Karnaphuli river. The port

handles general Cargo and containers and has specialized berths & moorings

for bulk handling of POL, edible oil, Grain, Cement clinker, Fertilizer & Project

Equipment etc. The approximate traffic figures 25900,000 tons of cargo,

Page 17: A Multi-Modal Transportation & Logistics

including 22 lac tons of inland cargo and handled annually. The port handles

annually about 784000 TEUs containers & that is also increasing at the rate

of 18% annually. The port location is in the Bay of Bangal Seasonal Area.

Tropical Dec, 1 to 30th, Summer from May,1 to Nov, 30th, maximum size of the

vessel LOA. 187.7m and vessels draft 8.50 meters at main jetties and 9.14m.

at CCT and is some specialized berths.

Pilotage is compulsory for merchant vessels. The entrance to the river is

constantly changing and no vessel should attempt to enter without a pilot.

Pilot boards approximately two nautical miles sea-ward of the outer Bar Buoy.

In the moderate to have weather, a lee side must be made for the pilot boat.

The vessel receiving a pilot is required to wait at the pilot ground near the

entrance, underway and taking consideration of the effect of tide and other

conditions to facilitate bording of the pilot in good time and to be able to

take advantage of the tide for entering and berthing etc. The distance from

the ground to the main jetties is approximately 11 nautical miles.

The organization came into existence in the year 1988. The organization is

here to provide logistics support, Port Clearing, Shipping and Transportation

services to the clients. The organization’s ability to meet the challenges of

today’s Business and Market Environment begins with an in-depth

understanding of client’s needs. This is the hallmark of this organization.

Ocean Transport and Economic Development:

Prior to the advent of containerization, the ship was the principal company of

transportation of goods between the place of production and place of

consumption.

There exit a verity of ship types as discussed here. Ocean Transport consists

of conventional cargo ship, like-tramp, cargo liner, passenger cargo liner:

Unitize cargo ship, like-pallet vessels, barge carrier, RO RO,

Container vessels: Specialized vessels, like-tanker , bulk.

Page 18: A Multi-Modal Transportation & Logistics

For the purpose of this article, the following ships are of interest:

Tramps- Cargo tramps are those ships, which are desined to carry no

specific type of cargo and move anywhere in the world. They are often run on

charter to carry bulk cargo or general cargo.

Cargo Liner- are vessels designed to carry a varity of cargo between specific

ports on fixed schedules. They usually carry general cargo (an accumulation

of small loads from different sources). Many of these ships have refrigerated

compartments capable of carrying perishable cargo, such as meat, fruit and

fish.

Passenger Cargo Liners-These are similar to cargo liners except that

accommodation (including lounges recreational facilities) usually of a high

standard is provided for passengers.

Pallet Ship-This types of vessel is equipped with large twin hatches and

cranes to allow pallets to be loaded or discharged through the side ports and

by crane. Forklift Trucks in the upper twin-decks move the pallets.

Barge Carriers-There are two types of barge carriers-LASH and SEABEE. In

the LASH system the ship itself has broad U-shaped stern and the massive

500 tone gantry crane which can drive along rails fitted on the upper deck.

SEABEE ship has three continuous cargo decks. There are no hatch openings

on the upper deck as a horizontal loading system is adopted.

Roll-on Roll –off (RO RO vessels)-This type of vessels has 3 basic elements :

The ship is fitted with a number of decks Ramps are installed to facilitate

vehicular movements between the decks: and often stern ramps are fitted for

loading and unloading. These types of vessels were developed initially for

short sea transportation of containers but have since gained the reputation of

being an economic system for ocean transport. They require little special port

facilities and offer the potential of a truly door to door service.

Page 19: A Multi-Modal Transportation & Logistics

Container Ships- The main object in the design of these vessels is to carry

the maximum number of containers within the designed length and breadth

of the vessel. Cellular container vessels are fitted with container guides that

are capable of withstanding dynamic (accelerating) forces due to rolling,

pitching and heaving. The larger container ship has a capacity of 3000 T.E.U.s

(Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) and is designed to operate in excess of 20

knots.

Tankers- Tankers are used to carry bulk liquid cargo. The most common

being oil. Tankers have the cargo carrying section divided into individual

tanks and cargo is discharged by cargo pumps fitted in one or more pump

rooms either at the ends of the tank section of sometimes in the middle.

Their size range from the very small coastal tankers to about 700,000 tons.

Speeds range from 12 to 16 knots:

Bulk Carriers- Bulk carriers are single-deck vessels which are designed to

transport single-commodity cargo such as grain, sugar and ore in bulk.

Deadweight capacities range from small to 150,000 tons and speeds are in

the range of 12-16 knots: and

Oil / Bulk / Ore (OBO)- The oil/Bulk/Ore carriers have a cross section similar

to the general bulk carrier. The structure is, however, significantly stronger

because bulkheads must be oil-tight and the double bottom must withstand

the high-density ore load. The special feature of this type of bulk carriers is

that they are designed for flexibility of operation and are able to transport

any one of several bulk cargoes on any one voyage.

Business Objectives:

Expanding Business Enterprises.

Time Quality Management.

Accumulating Wealth.

Taking the global context within the preview of open market economy this

sector must be developed for successful existence of Ocean Transport and

Logistics support. Now the industry now has to compete in a global market

where quality at every stage will matter significantly in Sector. To maintain

sustainability for a longer period of time, the entrepreneurs in this sector

should attempt to obtain ISO certification. A precondition has already been

set by WTO that ISO certification is a pre requisite for any enterprise that are

willing to compete in the global market. So the manufacturers of RMG should

prepare themselves for this consequence.
