The term “smart home” is used to describe a home that uses technology to allow the home's systems and electronics to communicate and coordinate with one another, be controlled by a time schedule, and even be remotely activated from a smartphone or other web enabled devices. Understanding what makes a smart home “intelligent” and how a smart home supports an environmentally conscious lifestyle or green living makes this discussion worthwhile.While money savings and convenience top the list, but smart home owners can also feel good that their home really makes Mother Earth smile. From within one's home or anywhere around the world, a smart home provides one comfort and c o n v e n i e n c e w h i l e e n h a n c i n g s e c u r i t y , e n e r g y e f f i c i e n c y a n d c o s t c o n t r o l .

Computerized thermostats give you the power to minimize your carbon footprint. If you're on vacation and suddenly remember you forgot to adjust the thermostat you can do so right from your phone. If a door is open, a smart thermostat can shut off the air conditioning or heat automatically. Smart thermostats learn your temperature preferences, making it even easier to maximize energy efficiency.

Smart home lighting solutions give you greater control over the lighting in your home and in doing so make your home more eco-friendly. Smart technology helps you program lightings to turn on just as you arrive home or according to sunrise and sunset- saving energy and enhancing safety and security.

Take advantage of smart window treatment systems and you'll reduce your home's energy consumption. For example, you can program window shades or blinds to close during the hottest part of the day. On the other hand, if you're trying to warm a cold house without running the heat, you can set shades to open during the day.

Energy management systems keep an eye on your home's power consumption so you can discover which systems, appliances or electronics are using the most energy and then control their use- especially during peak time.

Smart technology is a great idea. However, focusing all efforts on buildings or infrastructure to save energy and other resources is only one side of a coin. In other words, technology alone, whether green or otherwise, is flat and dull, without the people being actually smart (that means environmentally conscious and aware). Without smart people, a smart building becomes little more than an interesting commodity—and that alone is not very smart.

Thus living smart and living green is not just creating a smart habitat with lots of infrastructure and technology, but an endeavor

to educate and make people aware to become SMART to enable effectively use SMART infrastructure.

SMART LIVING: BUILDING SMART – LIVING GREEN

Smart home automation can substantially reduce one's home's energy consumption and helps to reduce carbon footprint. Today a growing range of affordable and smart home technologies help to make our lives really smart. However, SMART living is all about integrating all the elements– people and infrastructure, to make up the whole.

HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR VALUABLE FURNITURES

Can you imagine living in a house with no furniture? Such living would be drab, insipid and characterless unless you are a recluse. You

need not clutter your house with loads of furniture; that would be the other end of the scale and your house would look like a

furniture showroom.

What you need is furniture that is just right for the room and that which will complement the room. It should add character and along

with other accessories and interior decorations should make a style statement. But it is just not enough if you furnish your apartment

with furniture, you also need to take care of it.

Everything requires maintenance if you want them to look good and last longer. Your furniture is no exception. People take pride in

their furniture especially when they are antique. The antique furniture not only has aesthetic value but emotional too. Let us say that

you have inherited a rosewood chest of drawers which is 100 years old and has been in the family for years. This is an heirloom and if

you don't take care of it, you, probably, will not pass it on to the next generation.

Before you think of furniture maintenance you must know and understand the causes which damage them. Furniture is made from

wood, steel, wicker or cane, bamboo, fibre/plastic or a combination of different materials. There is also upholstered furniture.

Knowing the causes that damage these materials, maintenance becomes easier.

Careful handling and use of furniture can reduce the frequency of routine maintenance. Tighten up loose screws and fixings on the

furniture to prevent any further damage and ensure the furniture retains its original shape. Daily dusting is an important part of

furniture maintenance.

Cleaning, polishing and timely repairs will keep your furniture in good shape and condition. A stitch in time saves nine, it is said. This

is so true of furniture too. Minor cracks or breakages in furniture should be attended to swiftly; otherwise you may have to write it off.

Polished surfaces need to be cleaned carefully with proper solvent cleaning materials. Laminated surfaces can be cleaned with just

plain filtered water (ordinary tap water may leave sediments on the surface) or mopped with a wet cloth. The same is true for metal

furniture. Wood furniture would need to be waxed and polished, especially teak and rosewood.

Avoid too much wax though, as it could accumulate on the surface overtime and gather dirt unless polished well with no extra wax

coat remaining on the surface. You may mop your wooden furniture with a wet cloth but avoid using too much water since wood will

absorb the water and this could subsequently damage it. To clean rough edges or carved areas, use a tooth-brush that you no longer

use. This will help dislodge dirt in these difficult areas.

Generally, it is easier to clean metal and fibre/plastic furniture. Caution: do not use acidic cleaning solutions if you are cleaning

fibre/plastic or wooden furniture. Use recommended furniture cleaning solutions or a mild detergent solution suitable for it. Always

do a test-run by using the cleaning solution on a small area which is normally not easily visible.

Use a light vacuum cleaner for upholstered furniture but do not use too much force in dusting it as it may damage the upholstery.

Using a wet mop may sometimes stain the material if there is some coloured dirt on the surface.

To dust and clean wicker/cane or bamboo furniture it is better to use a brush to remove dust since the surface is not even and it has

interstices between the slats. Never use water or wet mop to clean varnished surfaces. This is sure to erode the varnish and leave

ugly patches.

Always use safety gear like gloves and masks when cleaning, especially if you are using paint thinners or some cleaning solutions that

are acidic in nature. It is always better to be safe than sorry.

Unless you are skilled, do not attempt to fix broken parts of your furniture. There are professional people who will be able to help. So

don't be penny wise and pound foolish. Regular routine maintenance will help to maintain your furniture in good condition for much

longer period of time.
