A MESSAGE FROM YOUR GLENDALE COUNCIL PTA PRESIDENT: Dear PTA Friends, October is such a fun month for all sorts of reasons! It is "Health Literacy Month" which means that it is a great time to redirect our conversational focus to some health related topics such as diet, nutrition, flu shots, hand washing and hygiene best practices. We should remember than October 16th is "World Food Day" and is a great time to remember to participate in your campus food drives and assist our families in need who struggle with hunger. Help us fill our food bank! Last week was a fantastic week for me as I joined PTA President Jami White and Principal Dr. Mary Mason for coee and a meeting. We celebrated newly installed ocers at Roosevelt Middle School on Tuesday. On Wednesday, it was nice to see so many of you at the LCAP meeting. The GUSD Board Room tables were filled to capacity and bustling with conversation about local control and a healthy review of what we decided we wanted last year and a celebration of our achieving some of those goals. There was dinner, childcare, and translation. I hope you consider joining the committee at the next LCAP meeting to be held on November 10th! Thursday was an even more fabulous day as we began with Glendale Educational Foundation's Annual State of the School's Breakfast. It was truly a magnificent celebration of everything GUSD does best! Superintendent Roberson spoke at length and presented a wonderful video, the Crescenta Valley High School Falcon Marching Band performed, and the guest's enjoyed the company of one another and key community leaders. In the afternoon Glendale Council PTA's LGBTQ Task Force met for it's first meeting. The committee of teachers, parents, administrator's and community members was led in spirited discussion by Glendale Council VP Bita Mathews. The meeting concluded with task lists for follow up by members. I look forward to hearing their report at the next Association meeting. Membership numbers are impressive, indeed! Thank you all for your continued eorts to keep our ranks growing and our advocacy voice strong! Reflections is underway and I cannot wait for you to see what they are doing at Valley View! PTA President Tawni Smith has promised to share with us at the next Association meeting. Please remember to get your remittences in to Council to keep your units in good standing! A MESSAGE FROM YOUR GLENDALE COUNCIL PTA PRESIDENT:

Dear PTA Friends,

October is such a fun month for all sorts of reasons!

Mary Mason for coffee and a meeting.  We celebrated newly installed officers at Roosevelt Middle School on Tuesday.

Insurance and tax-filing deadlines ahead

!

Insurance and tax-filing deadlines are coming up soon, and California State PTA is here to help! • Insurance -- Every PTA must submit an annual insurance premium through

channels. For 2017, the PTA local-unit premium is $221 and $159 for councils and districts. Check with your council or district office for your PTA's deadline date to avoid a $25 late fee. Remit early and find out more about PTA's insurance program.

• • Taxes -- Tax-filing deadlines are up ahead for the majority of PTA units, and

taxes must be filed in a timely manner to ensure good standing with California State PTA and the Internal Revenue Service. All non-profit organizations must file taxes annually, so be sure to check your PTA's bylaws for your fiscal-year dates to help guide your tax-filing deadlines. And remember: California State PTA has many resourcesavailable to help your PTA stay up-to-date with accurate taxes, so don't hesitate -- contact ustoday!

Membership challenges help your PTA do good things for kids

!

Membership-incentive due dates are fast approaching, with the first membership challenge of the year -- Ready, Set, Remit -- due October 31. This first challenge helps all PTAs get off on the right membership foot by turning in membership dues right away. To qualify for this challenge, just remit PTA dues for at least 30 members through channels to your PTA council (if in council) or PTA district as soon as they come in. Check with your council or district for deadlines in order to get the remittance in to California State PTA before October 31. All local PTAs meeting this challenge receive a beautiful PTA certificate, and your PTA will be well-positioned for the other exciting membership challenge: Do Good Things for Your PTA Membership. Ready, Set, Remit is serving as one of the mandatory qualifications for this second challenge. Continue to remit membership dues monthly, and contact your council or district PTA office with any questions. And check out capta.org for a wide variety of membership-marketing materials, logos and graphics to keep the membership excitement going all year long!

Tips for a successful Reflections Art Program

! National PTA's popular Reflections Art Program is kicking off in schools across the country, and your PTA can be part of it!

California State PTA has Reflections resources available online to help you run a successful -- and inspiring -- Reflections Art Program for your school community: • Reflections checklist • Reflections Local Leaders Guide • Judging tips and scorecard • General rules and guidelines • Theme-search information • Fliers and promotional materials • Sample Action Plan. Find out more about bringing the Reflections Art Program to your school.

Know the roles of the Nominating Committee

!

The Nominating Committee is one of the most important committees in PTA. It is the only PTA committee that is not appointed by the president, and is elected by the membership at least two months prior to the election of officers. Determining when to elect the committee and how many people to elect is outlined in your unit bylaws. Don’t forget to elect alternates, in the event an elected committee member cannot attend a committee meeting. Most units should be electing the nominating committee no later than January or February for the election of officers in March or early April. Learn more about the committee's roles, check out a helpful checklist and prepare for upcoming elections!

!

Mark your calendar! • October 17 -- Due date for PTA scholarship and grant applications • October 31 -- Per-capita due to qualify for Ready, Set, Remit • November 1 -- Reflections Art Program theme-search entries due • November 1 -- Draft resolutions due to California State PTA • November 15 -- Tax-filing deadline for most PTAs (check your bylaws).

Welcome to the brand new Ed100.org!

! View New Site We've upgraded the look and feel, improved the navigation, and added new resources to help you make a difference in your school and your community. Yes. We are jazzed. Our reason for existence is to help you make a difference in your schools. With this release, we’ve added lots of new features to help you. What’s New? Quite a bit:

• New information and resources help keep you up-to-date on the latest in education -- including our new Parent Leader Guide, which can help you prepare great parent meetings.

• New quizzes at the end of each lesson reinforce important ideas. (Complete these questions correctly to earn your "ticket" for each lesson. Answer them all to earn your Ed100 certificate.)

• The new design works even better on phones and tablets. • Now it's super-easy to share lessons using email, Facebook, Twitter

and LinkedIn. (When you share lessons this way, you earn bonus tickets, too.)

Keeping the Good Stuff Still free. Ed100 is still a FREE self paced online course to help you make a difference in California’s education system. Still not magic. Learning doesn't happen magically. We created Ed100.org to make it easier for anyone to understand the system in California so they can do their part in making it work for kids. Today's room parents and site council members are tomorrow's school board leaders, legislators and mayors. You can still win $1,000 for your school’s PTA. With this release, we're starting fresh. Each ticket you earn is an entry in the next drawing, which is sponsored by the California State PTA with support from Full Circle Fund. On November 16, we will draw four winners using ONLY fresh tickets. If you have claimed tickets in past drawings, you can "refresh" them to qualify for the next drawing -- just go to Ed100.org and take the quizzes. We think you'll like them, and learn even more! Details here New tools to develop teamwork at your school The best way to use Ed100 is together. We set up the rules of the drawing to help you build teams -- for example, to win, you need at least two participants at your school. You can earn bonus tickets by sharing lessons, or by inviting others to join your team. Lately we've been thinking in practical terms about how to support Ed100 teams in schools and districts. Here are a few specific ideas and resources to help you: • Plan great meetings using the new Ed100 Parent Leader Guide. • Invite participation with this editable flyer, which you can customize to

make your own - just make a new copy! Spanish version. • Add the Ed100 logo to a presentation, page or message. How do you like the new Ed100? How else can we help you? Just send us a note at [email protected].

Will your school be the lucky one? You can win $1,000 for your PTA while increasing your knowledge of key K-12 education issues. Here’s how it works: For each short lesson you read on Ed100.org, you earn a ticket in a drawing for the benefit of your school’s PTA. The more tickets you earn, the better chance your PTA has to win. Sign Up to Win

Congratulations, and keep up the great work! PTA leaders and volunteers like you have been working hard these past few months to strengthen and grow your PTA membership -- and it shows: PTA membership is up, helping all our school communities do good things for kids! Check your PTA membership numbers to see if you have increased membership at your PTA and, if you have, tell us how at we'll share successes across the state. It's early in the year, so please keep up your membership efforts so we can continue to grow and increase the voice for our children. Remember our first membership challenge -- Ready, Set Remit -- ends October 31, and be sure to check out the Do Good Things for Your PTA Membership challenge, too. YOU make a difference for our children, schools and communities -- thank you!
