Tom Rosenberg, President and CEO of the American Camp Association (NOTE: This was originally published as a blog by Tom, a dear friend of mine, last July as part of Camp Kindness Day. PSSDC took part in that day by having campers write letters to family members and friends who were kind to them and thanking staff and campers by intentionally looking for and recognizing acts of kindness. The 2019 Camp Kindness Day is scheduled for July 23rd)

Happy Camp Kindness Day! Today, America’s summer camps are celebrating the kindness and empathy that is taught and practiced by nearly 15 million children every day at over 14,000 day and overnight camps across the country.

Summer camps offer campers and staff the opportunity to unplug and deeply connect in-person and immersively in child-centered, social-emotional learning communities. At camp, everyone belongs and learns to contribute altruistically in a nurturing, physically and emotionally safe environment where they learn to build caring, trusting, and respectful relationships with individuals who are different from themselves. They become more aware of their own emotions and more adept at sharing their feelings and learning to understand someone else’s experiences and feelings. Living in a kindness-emphasized community, campers and staff develop greater self-esteem and optimism. They learn to practice mindfulness and fully experience joy, relaxation, and happiness. Camps are positive psychology learning ecosystems.

Throughout my 27-year career as a camp professional, countless parents have asked me about the “secret sauce” ingredients of their child’s transformative camp experiences. Living in a summer culture where kindness and empathy are universally valued and where selfless generosity is celebrated helps a young person learn to feel emotionally and physically safe. With encouragement from friends and mentoring leaders, participants learn to take positive risks, learn from their mistakes, and overcome challenges. They become more responsible, confident, and adaptable. They feel an addictive sense of community belonging and are strengthened by greater resilience and humility.

On the last day of each session, it was always a delight to hear campers exclaim to their parents how wonderful it was to spend a chunk of their summer unplugged, not having to worry about texting, social media, and digital relationships. At camp, they focused entirely on good old-fashioned human-powered activities and practicing relationship-building. At the heart of this chemistry is the constant practice of kind-ness, compassion, generosity, and gratitude in a culture that continues year after year, session after session.

Camp staff emphasize kindness and empathy daily through a variety of practices, programs, and games. At mealtimes, staff model kindness by recognizing campers for their kind, generous, or altruistic behaviors with complimentary “warm fuzzies” tokens. They encourage campers to wish others a great day, stand up for others verbally, and be inclusive in the way they speak. Staff encourage kindness in action by teaching active listening and discouraging interruptions, as well as through efforts to be kind to our environment, volunteering to help others, including everyone in games, checking on the feelings of friends, and by being positive and smiling with a glass-half-full perspective. Camp directors share stories of former campers and staff who now lead families, organizations, and communities as exemplary servant leaders. Tributes to “good people” who frame their lives around impactful contagious acts of kindness that will have an endless positive ripple effect long after they are gone.

I’m looking forward to seeing how camps across the country celebrate Camp Kindness Day.

Thank you to camp professionals, staff members, and campers across the country for making a difference by teaching kindness and empathy intentionally in all that you do every day throughout the year.

“When you are kind to others, it not only changes you, it changes the world.” — Harold Kushner

Other than New Year’s, there is probably no other time during the year that motivates us to make a fresh start like

springtime does. When the warm breezes start blowing, we want to throw open the windows and let the rebirth all around

us revitalize our homes and our spirits.

Because it seems natural to clean out the old during this time of year, it’s a great time to come face to face with our

excuses for not getting fit and healthy. Excuses pile up just like the clutter that we accumulate in our houses, but it’s

time to come clean.

What is your excuse for not choosing health? I don’t have the time to exercise: This is likely one of the most common excuses. You are busy. You have to work all

day (or all night), you have to get the kids to school, you have to cook dinner, go to the grocery store, mow the lawn,

change the oil in the car, care for your aging parents—there is simply no time for exercise.

Really?

Consider this. If you do not exercise, you will almost certainly begin experiencing the illness and disease that comes

from an inactive lifestyle. When you begin experiencing symptoms, you’ll have to make an appointment with the doctor,

drive to your appointment, wait to be seen, schedule additional tests at the hospital and wait for your prescriptions to be

filled at the pharmacy. And with chronic illness, this scenario will be played out month after month after month. And it

takes a lot of time.

Will you find the time in your busy life to see to your medical issues?

Yes, of course you will. You will make sure that you adjust your schedule and your life to accommodate your illness. So

why not adjust your schedule now to accommodate the prevention of illness through exercise? You do have the time;

you just have to decide to use it.

The truth is that if you do not make the time for exercise, you will have to make time for illness. And exercise takes

a lot less time out of your life than disease.

I don’t like to exercise: Again, a pretty common excuse. But it won’t let you off the hook. Lots of people do not like to

exercise, but they make themselves do it anyway. Do you like feeling tired? Do you like being overweight? Do you like

having to undergo medical tests? Without exercise, you will feel tired, be overweight and become sick, so it comes down

to choosing your ‘dislike.’

I don’t have the energy to exercise: If you are unfit, you likely have low energy. And when you don’t have much

energy, the last thing you can imagine is exercising. But until you become more active, you will not have the energy you

so long for. As you begin exercising, you will start having more energy. You won’t start feeling better until you start mov-

ing.

It’s just not the right time for me to start working out. “I’ll start working out when…

• I get some decent exercise clothes

• Summer vacation starts

• The kids go back to school

• I get my house organized

• Work lets up

• I have more time

• Life calms down

• The kids get older

• The weather warms up a little

• The weather cools down a little

• Someday…just not today

It will never be the perfect time to start a fitness routine. You just have to start.

Surrender your excuses Decide to stop hiding behind your excuses. Make a clean sweep and toss those excuses out. Everybody has excuses for

not exercising. The fit and healthy people around you choose to give up the excuses and just do it. That doesn’t

mean it is easy for them. It just means that they love feeling energetic, strong, healthy and empowered enough to push

in and get it done. You can be that way too.

Internationals Soccer Club is proud to announce that former U.S. U19 and U20 Women’s National Team head coach Jitka Klimková has joined the club as a staff coach.

“We have a long history of attracting quality coaches and quality people to the club and adding a coach with Jitka’s background, passion, knowledge, and love for the game is another example of our commitment to surrounding our players with the best resources to aid in their development,” Internationals SC Founder, President, and Director of Coaching Zdravko Popovic said. “Jitka has a great soccer brain and an unparalleled ability to teach the game. She has only been here for a month and has already made an immediate impact – connecting with players and coaches and fully embracing and contributing to our strong culture. I am thrilled that she has chosen to commit her time and energy to our club.” Klimková brings extensive experience, including 16 years of coaching at the highest level of the game, to Internationals SC. In New Zealand, Klimková gained experience as the head coach for the U17 Women’s National Team, assistant coach for the New Zealand U20 National Team, and assistant coach with the senior Women’s National Team from 2013-2014. In Australia, she was head coach in the professional ranks with W-League Canberra United FC from 2011-2013, winning the league championship and Coach of the Year honors. In the Czech

Republic, she was active coaching at the club and national team levels from 2003-2011, serving as club director and head coach for FC Slovácko Uherské, head coach for the U19 Women’s National Team, assistant coach for the U17 Women’s National Team, and head coach and assistant coach for DFC Compex Otrokovice.

“We are extremely thrilled to welcome Jitka Klimková to the Internationals Soccer Club,” Internationals SC Director of Coaching Keri Sarver added. “After working with her at US Soccer for the past four years, I knew that her coaching philosophy and personal values were aligned perfectly with what we do at the club. Her international and professional experience is obviously a huge benefit but

what I am most excited about is for our players to absorb her knowledge, passion, and love for the game. She creates a fun, safe and challenging environment where players have the freedom and courage to take risks and be themselves. She has an amazing ability to connect with players and coaches and engage them in an extremely positive way.” Klimková also boasts an impressive playing career that spanned from 1991 to 2003, including time with the Czech Republic Women’s National Team, DFC Compex Otrokovic, and Slávia Holíč. Klimková possesses the highest level of licenses available, including the UEFA “Professional,” UEFA “A,” UEFA “B,” and the Coerver Coaching Youth Diploma. “I'm pleased to join the Internationals coaching team,” Klimková concluded. “I have coached alongside Keri Sarver for almost four years now and we are like-minded and aligned philosophically. Zdravko Popovic has established a powerful vision for the club and I feel fortunate to be part of the team. Honestly, I'm overwhelmed with the style of play of each team and with the amazing culture the club embodies. It is all about what is best for the team and the individual players. Being here just for couple weeks now, I see how and why the Internationals are one of the special clubs in the nation and have a history of developing amazing people, players, and teams.” Photo Credit: Brent Durken/ISNSoccer.com and Czech FA
