Rebuilding the Lives of Homeless Men One Precious Soul at a Time

“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength…” -

Isaiah 40:31

A Message from our director:

A word from Betty:

Dear Friends in Christ:

2019 was an awesome year at Calvary Rescue Mission. This was the first full year in our new building and with your help, we were able to serve over twice as many men compared to our last full year in the old building. In 2019, we provided 26,386 overnight lodgings, served 78,561 delicious hot meals, saw 725 precious souls pray to receive Jesus Christ and we clothed 1,612 men. By God’s grace we graduated several groups of men from discipleship and addiction recovery classes. Volunteers also helped with several job fairs and medical/dental clinics. We serve a great God and expect even greater things this year! Thank you for all of your fantastic prayers, help and support

Our Awesome Volunteers ...

the city of David a Savior, who is

A couple of years ago a regular volunteer was seated in the dining room in the old building talking with a few staff members, when one of the newer clients walked through on his way to chapel. Once the client started up the stairs, the volunteer whispered, "What is that guy's name?" The answer was, "That's Karl Horton." Then, a second answer came from the stairway in a very deep and distinctive Southern drawl, "Naw . . . it's Katfish (as he spells it)!"

Karl "Katfish" Horton was born and raised in Nashville, TN, where he worked as a cook for Bateman Senior Meals. When Bateman closed its Nashville operation and moved to Memphis, Karl was asked to come to Memphis with them. He loves what he does, so he moved into a hotel in

Memphis for a year. It was expensive living in a hotel, but he made it work for a year. A friend told him about Calvary Rescue Mission so he

decided to try it two years ago. He arrived on Christmas Day in 2017, but was turned away because there were no available beds (we were still in our old facility with 46 beds). He was successful the next night after arriving early and waiting next door to be sure that he was one of the first in line to improve his chance of getting a bed.

Karl has stayed busy at Calvary Rescue Mission during his two years here. In addition to working, cooking meals for seniors, he has completed Discipleship I and will complete Discipleship II in a few weeks. He is frequently found studying his Bible and is normally one of the first to arrive for chapel service. One of his most surprising talents is his ability to crochet. He says that crocheting is a great stress reliever and helps him forget any problems.

Karl said that his favorite thing about Calvary is the presence of God. He said that God is willing to save anyone if they are willing to receive His free gift. He added that it is up to each individual whether they will receive or deny Him. When asked how long he planned to stay at Calvary Rescue Mission, he said, "I don't plan to leave until God says it's time . . . or the staff tells me that I can't come back!"

David Wiedmeyer,

Former Client

Shares His heartfelt thoughts about what Calvary means to him ...

Over the years I have been in a lot of places from the west to the east, and north to the south, and in that time I

never found a place like Calvary Rescue Mission. A place where a man

regardless of his past can still be treated as a man. A place of honor, a

place of respect, a place of rest, a place with a hand up and not a hand out.

But more importantly it’s a place that GOD designed for the wandering

sinners to find a city of refuge, like my self.

I came to calvary 6 years ago, said yes to GOD, and HE has taken the rest. The way I always believed, you need a solid foundation and Calvary was just that. Do not be mistaken, to me, Calvary is not a homeless shelter it is a port that

GOD uses to bring all his children together for the purpose of advancing HIS Kingdom. Along with that you are

able to build life changing relationships with everyone who serves at Calvary

from the staff to the volunteers, which are more than amazing.

“For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our

hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of

Christ.” 2 Corinthians 4:6

This year began with a strong reminder - Life is so Fragile! There are two families

who have been involved for years in volunteering at Calvary. Both of these families

were greatly impacted within two days apart. Both had sons about the same age who

were in automobile accidents. The accident on Sunday the young man and his brother

flipped over their car and wrapped around a telephone pole. The younger brother

noticed that his brothers eyes were rolled back and no pulse - all indications he was

dead. Miraculously he survived and is recovering. On Tuesday morning the other

young man’s crash took him from his car right into the arms of His Savior. As

Christians, we realize God has a plan for each of us and we have the responsibility of

sharing the Gospel to everyone we come in contact with. None of us know when we

will take our last breath.

We want each man who comes into our building to know we love them and that God

has a plan for them. We are all born with a sin nature and miss the mark of God’s

holiness. We are not prepared to live until we are ready to die. Pray for our staff and

all the preachers to impress on these men that Life is Fragile! Eternity is Sure!
