A Message from Amy Stacey, NPAA President-Elect
a PTA Director. We would like to congratulate the newly elected Canadian Physiotherapy Association’s (CPA) PTA Board of Director, Sandra Lamb. In this light, I will transition from president-elect, to president when Sandra starts her new role on the board in June.
We have had a busy spring with lots of exciting things happening within the Assembly! The Physiotherapy Foundation of Canada was proud to launch a new NPAA Grant in April, and we have shared the results of the lucky applicants on page 4! In this edition of the newsletter, we have also highlighted the reduced new grad member fees and included links to CPA publications.
See page 2 for a profile of St Clair College’s OTA/PTA Program. We have also featured Tamika DeCaire in our member profile, offered continuing education opportunities, and CPA professional development.
With our membership year at its half-way point, so are our membership fees, which have reduced by 50%!
The NPAA continues to recruit members to join its Administrative Council (volunteer executive)! Our administrative council needs to grow to most effectively advocate for our PTA colleagues & physiotherapist assistant students from coast to coast. Send us a message if you are interested in joining our team of volunteers!

The NPAA would like to congratulate the
newly-elected Canadian Physiotherapy

Sandra Lamb. Sandra officially begins her

19 at Congress in Halifax, NS. She has been
the President of the National Physiotherapist

within the profession. We look forward to
working with her in her new position on the
board.
We would also like to thank Lesley Trunley
for her continuing support as the PTA Board

The OTA/PTA program at St Clair College (SCC) is housed on beautiful Thames Campus situated in the small community
of Chatham – Kent, in Southwestern Ontario. Thames Campus is small by college standards (1400 students) and offers a
community feel with small class sizes and an active student body - Thames Students Inc.
The OTA/PTA program at SCC took in its first cohort in September of 2010 and accepts one intake of 40 students in
September each year. The program is traditionally waitlisted by mid-April. Faculty in the program are professionally
trained including Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Kinesiologists and graduate OTA/PTAs.
The dedicated OTA/PTA lab is housed in the
Thames Campus Healthplex which opened in
2010 and boasts a large gymnasium and a state
of the art exercise facility. The program in
collaboration with other Thames Campus
programs makes use of a learning lab called
“The Apartment” for activities of daily living
training. This lab has a kitchen, bathroom,
“living” area and bedroom all set up to simulate
training of individuals for optimal independent
living.

The program includes two 7 week full time placements during which students can consolidate their knowledge base with
appropriate hands on supervised clinical experience in both the OT and PT environment. These are undertaken in the
third and fourth semesters. Placement opportunities can be located throughout Southwestern Ontario and students are
encouraged, should they wish, to find suitable facilities in their own home towns.
Our program mission states, “St Clair College OTA/PTA program will offer a comprehensive, multimodal and practical
education in the field of OTA/PTA. This education will be provided in an inclusive student centered environment. We will
graduate well rounded individuals of personal and professional integrity with a high level of clinical competence across
multiple, diverse patient settings. Our graduates will have instilled a passion for their chosen field and will be desirous of
continued personal and professional growth.” We feel that we achieve these high standards through a comprehensive
hands on approach to excellence in education. This is achieved through collaborative learning between students, faculty
and placement supervisors and open dialogue with our stakeholders, graduates and potential employers.
The St Clair College OTA/PTA Program Document can be found at:

The OTA/PTA program at St Clair College is currently a candidate for accreditation through the Physiotherapy Education
Accreditation Canada. The full accreditation hearing is scheduled for November 2016.

My name is Tamika DeCaire. I graduated from Centennial College, Toronto, in 2009 and promptly began working at St. John's Rehab Hospital. I have gained so much experience working with the various populations including neuro, amputees, cardiac, trauma, and ortho patients. From 2010- 2012 I was also a teacher's assistant for the OTA and PTA program at Centennial College. Working with students; helping them gain the knowledge and experience to succeed in this career field was one of the most rewarding experiences I have had. I had a lot of fun teaching and was able to learn a lot from the students while passing on my knowledge to them and watching them grow and thrive in the environment. I began working at North York General Hospital in 2011 and am currently employed there. I have participated in many projects such as creating rehab assistant guidelines for the hospital, as well as on going quality improvement initiatives like the “MOVE ON” project and Intentional Rounding. I am also very involved in taking students for their placements so they are given the opportunity to receive the hands on experience in a hospital setting. I have also taken many courses to enhance my skills as an OTA and PTA: Acute Care 101: The OTA/OTA Perspectives, Intro to NDT/ Bobath and Seating and Mobility just to name a few. I am also currently enrolled in a Bachelors of Allied Health Sciences at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology to advance my career and continue my education. I am very excited about taking on this new role as an Ontario NPAA rep for PTAs as I am very passionate about my career field and want to be able to spread the word about what amazing opportunities can be given to our students, new grads and veterans working in the field. I am looking forward to this new role and everything it brings!

We are excited to announce the three successful applicants for the "NPAA Grant"! The Physiotherapy Foundation of Canada was proud to launch the NPAA Grant in April. It was established by the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA) and the Physiotherapy Foundation of Canada (PFC) to support a NPAA member(s) to pursue continuing professional development and translate learning in their local community. This annual grant also recognizes the contribution that NPAA members make to the profession and to CPA. Awards are made for up to $2,500 (shared, if more than one successful applicant), jointly funded by CPA and PFC. This grant is open to any full PTA member of the NPAA in good standing.
Drum roll please!
