GENERATING STATION
OVERHEAR TRANSMISION LINES
When electricity leaves the generating station, the voltage of the electricity is increased to a level suitable for long-distance travel across high-voltage transmission power lines
SUBSTATION
Transmission lines end at sub-stations. In the substation, the voltage of the electricity is reduced and passed through lower voltage distribution power lines.
PAD-MOUNT TRANSFORMERThe electricity is reduced to a safe level by the pole-top transformer in areas where distribution lines run above ground or a pad-mount transformer (usually housed in a green box) in areas where distribution lines run under ground.

Distribution lines carry the electricity to homes, businesses, schools and other users of electricity.
