Tatsumi

When celebrated Singapore film maker Eric Khoo wanted to make an animated film, he roped in the creative talents at Infinite Frameworks (IFW) and their powerful HP Z200 Workstations to turn his vision into reality. The result was the 93-minute animated Japanese featuretitled“Tatsumi”thatexploresthelifeof75-yearold Yoshihiro Tatsumi and showcases some of his most important stories written in the early seventies. Tatsumi is a mangaka (Japanese for comic artist) who is widely credited with starting the gekiga style of alternative comics in Japan.

IFW faced a two-fold challenge in creating the animated feature film. They had to translate Tatsumi’s artwork to the big screen while retaining the authenticity of his works. At the same time, they had to fulfill Khoo’s direction and vision of the movie. With Tatsumi being a major Japanese icon, the team wanted to instill a sense of authenticity into every frame of the movie; otherwise the Japanese audience would reject it.

IFW needed a technology solution that would not fail on them, and turned to the HP Z200 Workstation based on the Intel® Core™ i5 processor. Thanks to the extreme performance and stability of the workstations, IFW’s artists could create and receive immediate feedback on their animations which was essential in helping the artists focus on their work. The workstations facilitated extremely fast prototyping, excellent artist interaction, rapid rendering, and excellent reliability. Zero downtime and no hardware issues to content with boosted the production team’s efficiency, enabling Eric Khoo and IFW to complete the animated feature within nine months.

With HP technology, DreamWorks Animation can utilise the largest number of moving cameras on any of its films to date. This aided the company in taking the creative elements in“Monstersvs.Aliens”tonewlevelsbycombiningseveralhundredHPworkstationswiththelargestandmostpowerful“renderfarm”–agroupingofHPProLiantBladeServersthatis able to work quickly in concert to process the animation sequence. This was the biggest set-up ever used by DreamWorks Animation.
