School of MedicineThe MCW School of Medicine in Milwaukee and campuses in Green Bay and Central Wisconsin provide an innovative, rigorous and immersive curriculum that prepares our graduates with a deep understanding of the healthcare needs in their communities.

• The Milwaukee campus offers a four-year curriculum with opportunities to explore a wide variety of Scholarly Pathways that allow students to individualize their medical training while considering career paths of interest.

• The Green Bay and Central Wisconsin campuses provide a calendar-efficient, three-year curricu-lum, ideally suited for students seeking a career with a primary care emphasis. Students live and learn immersed in the communities where they are likely to practice. MCW-Green Bay opened in July 2015. MCW-Central Wisconsin opened in July 2016.

• A new Anesthesiologist Assistant program (MS) matriculated students in August 2016 in Milwaukee.

MCW is working to ensure that a larger proportion of our graduates stay in Wisconsin to practice after graduation. Our School of Medicine will help provide future physicians in communities across the state, particularly in areas where doctors are needed the most.mcw.edu/medicalschool

The Medical College of Wisconsin’s community engagement mission focuses on building productive partnerships with communities in Wisconsin and beyond. Through these partnerships and the relationships that sustain them, MCW and its community collaborators work together to have a greater impact on addressing Wisconsin’s critical health needs.

• MCW is one of four medical schools nation-wide to have received the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification.

• More than 600 faculty and staff members are involved in more than 1,100 community outreach activities, according to the MCW Office of Community Engagement’s recent faculty and staff surveys. To help coordinate these efforts happening across MCW’s campus, MCW recently launched the Community Engagement Liaison

Program. This program provides MCW community engagement representatives with new resources to help support ongoing activities, learn more about the community engagement mission and get more people involved in community engagement.

• The MCW Community Engagement Core provides a broad range of services in community engagement to further develop MCW’s capacity to partner with communities. Current programs include the Health Science Square, Seed Grant Program, Lunch & Learn

Roundtable Series and Mentoring Network. The Community Engagement Core is a primary resource and catalyst for community engagement projects for MCW and community partners, and impacts how effectively MCW addresses health equity and social disparities across Wisconsin. mcw.edu/communityengagement

The Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin (AHW) Endowment launched its first funded initiatives in community health, research and education in 2004. The Endowment was established through funds resulting from the Blue Cross/Blue Shield United of Wisconsin’s conversion to a for-profit corporation.

• The Endowment’s initial value of $318.6 million now totals nearly $420 million through MCW’s stewardship.*

• AHW has awarded more than $200 million to more than 365 initiatives dedicated to improving the health of the people of Wisconsin.*

Healthier Wisconsin Partnership Program (This portion of the Endowment funds community health improvement and community-academic partnerships.)• More than 175 community-based

health initiatives have received funding to advance strategic

interventions, health promotion and systems changes since 2004.*

• HWPP has contributed to health improvement efforts in 46 of Wisconsin’s 72 counties and more than 20 statewide initiatives.**

Research and Education Program (This portion of the Endowment contributes to improved health through support for research discoveries and innovative educational initiatives.)

• Contributed to new discoveries in identifying genes underlying complex diseases, understanding and treating pancreatic cancer, and developing new technologies and methods for treating cardiac abnormalities.

• Funded the development of MCW’s medical school campuses in Green Bay and Central Wisconsin to help address the physician shortage in Wisconsin. mcw.edu/AHW

CLINICAL AND TRANSLATIONAL SCIENCE INSTITUTE OF SOUTHEAST WISCONSIN

Transforming Biomedical Research to Improve HealthThe Clinical and Translational Science Institute of Southeast Wisconsin (CTSI) is dedicated to advancing the health of our community and our nation through research and discovery. The CTSI’s consortium of eight Milwaukee institutions drives a collective commitment to share resources, technology, knowledge and expertise to work toward common goals in healthcare. This synergy avoids duplication and achieves better outcomes faster and more cost- effectively.

• The CTSI is one of 64 recipients nationwide of the National Institutes of Health’s Clinical and Translational Science Award.

• The CTSI’s borderless and collaborative enterprise expands the scope of translational research by generating and testing research hypotheses and

implementing best practices that transform and enhance the development of therapeutic, diagnostic and preventive interventions.

• Special populations are integrated into the research environment, including underrepresented minorities, children, the elderly and veterans.

• Pilot Awards stimulate promising new research projects and collaborative research teams across institutions.

• Integrating Research into Clinical Practice Awards improve the quality, patient experience, value and efficiency of healthcare delivery.

• The 500 STARS Initiative supports high school, undergraduate and graduate students on a path to becoming translational scientists.

• Community-Driven Research enables community members to inspire research topics and become part of a research team.

The eight CTSI consortium members are: • BloodCenter of Wisconsin • Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin • Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center • Froedtert Hospital • Marquette University • Medical College of Wisconsin • Milwaukee School of Engineering • University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
