ROUNDHOUSE VISION & MISSIONIn September of 1996 the Roundhouse Advisory Committee, composed of neighbourhood repre-sentatives, heritage supporters, members of the arts community and Park Board staff , undertook a retreat to work through a vision for the Roundhouse. The following is the result of those discussions:

The overall mission is to celebrate diversity... of people, values, ideas and activities.

This mission is made up of three key elements:

THE ROUNDHOUSE AS PROJECTAll of us who work or play or socialize at the Roundhouse will be active participants in an evolving project to fi nd new and creative ways to integrate the arts, community, culture and sports.

THE ROUNDHOUSE AS OASISThe Roundhouse is located in the centre of one of the largest urban experiments in history, trans-forming a few hundred acres of mostly vacant lots into one of North America’s densest and most diverse urban sites. The Roundhouse will be an oasis in the centre of this dynamic mix, enabling people to use their creativity and energy (at whatever level) to rejuvenate themselves and to be better equipped to face a blizzard of challenges and opportunities around them.

THE ROUNDHOUSE AS CONNECTIONThe Roundhouse exists to identify and serve the needs of widely divergent communities. To do this the Roundhouse must reach out to the places and situations where those communities feel comfortable. These relationships will grow into Roundhouse programs through sponsorships, part-nerships, and our own productions.

ROUNDHOUSE SOCIETY

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

On behalf of the Roundhouse board of directors, I am pleased to invite you to our 20th Anniversary celebration on Saturday May 13 at the Roundhouse. Many of our top partners and performers from the past 20 years will help fill our birthday celebration with music and dance performances, along with drop-in recreation classes, our gym dedicated entirely to family-friendly activities, and, of course, birthday cake! We do hope that you join us on May 13.

Aside from our pending birthday celebration, the Roundhouse's board, staff, and volunteers have been as busy as always. The board is in the final stretch of our "Name Your Seat and Park Your Caboose" fundraiser, aimed at replacing and expanding the seats in our always-busy Performance Centre. If you want to know more about how to support the Roundhouse, please contact me at [email protected].

On Saturday May 27 join us for Art Mart, a unique craft fair where local artists demonstrate their talents and offer their work for sale. Art Mart features artists and crafters ready to explain their crafts and answer your questions.

From April 18 to 21 our Documentation Team hosts a photography exhibition showcasing Roundhouse events from the past year, from huge celebrations such as Diwali to intimate shows and workshops. Learn about our past, and about how you can be involved in future Roundhouse initiatives.

To that end, we also encourage you to join us in thanking our volunteers during National Volunteer Week, April 23 to 29. The Roundhouse is grateful to our hundreds of volunteers who, along with our staff, are the real foundation of all of our initiatives. Contact us to learn how you can get involved!

Warm regards,

Andrew DiltsPresident, Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Society

ROUNDHOUSE 20TH ANNIVERSARY MAY 13

Presented by the Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Society

Sat May 13, 11am-4pmLocations throughout the RoundhouseINFO www.roundhouse.caIn 1997, the world population was closing in on six billion people, Dolly the cloned sheep was born in Scotland, and Titanic stormed onto the silver screen. In Vancouver, post-industrial and post-Expo Yaletown was taking shape as a neighbourhood. The Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre quietly opened its doors to the public on May 3. We offered 45 arts and recreation courses and workshops; today there are over 200 per season.

In that first year, eight arts partners presented projects in our newly minted performance centre and exhibition hall; in 2016, sixty arts and cultural groups of all kinds presented performances and events ranging from emerging community dance performances to renowned events including Talk-ing Stick, PuSh Festival and the Canadian Improv Games.

In 1997, the Roundhouse hosted its first community-engaged artist in residence project that saw professional artists collaborate with community members to create and present art, dance and the-atre; today the Roundhouse is one of Vancouver’s acknowledged leaders in community-engaged arts practice.

Celebrate 20 years of arts, recreation and community at the Roundhouse 20th Anniversary! Join us for family activities, performances, drop-in arts, dance and fitness workshops, and so much more.

Public performances by longstanding arts partners and artist in residence projects including: All Bodies Dance Project, Back Pocket Singers, Bluebird North’s Shari Ulrich, Kokoro Dance, Pride in Art, Roundhouse Community Dancers, and Roundhouse Youth Theatre Action Group.

Windows onto the past. Check out screenings of the Roundhouse Story video series, a fascinating look at the Roundhouse and Yaletown’s history. Knowledgeable West Coast Railway Association volunteers in the Engine 374 Pavilion eagerly await your questions about the first locomotive to pull a trans-continental passenger train across Canada in 1887. The Great Hall Gallery and the Round-house Heritage Gallery take you from the 1880s to the present, with archival program guides, old news clippings, early Roundhouse documents, and much more.

Solstice workshops. All ages are welcome to participate in workshops with one of our founding artist residencies, the Secret Lantern Society.

Demonstration projects in the woodworking and pottery studio, an exhibition of student work, and a pottery sale to lure you into the worlds of ceramics and carpentry.

The Family Zone in the Gym with recreation and arts activities for active, creative inter-genera-tional fun. Make sure to drop-in and contrib-ute to our community vinyl collage.

30 minutes of Fitness and Dance. You can totally do it! Drop in on one of 10 free 30-min-ute workshops led by some of our most loyal instructors — try yoga, cardio core, Tai Chi Chuan, Zumba, or hip hop for youth.

Wrap, knit-bomb and web up the Round-house with Yarn-Around, a fabric- and fibre-based artist in residence project.

Rest your feet and groove. Grab a seat in the Roundhouse Foyer and enjoy our popular Jazz in the Mews live performances.

And of course… there will be cake. Yay for CAKE!

It's been a wonderful 20 years growing and changing with the neighbourhood and the city of Vancouver and we hope you will cel-ebrate with us.

OUTSIDER ART FESTIVAL AUG 11–13

A Roundhouse partnership with the Community Arts Council of Vancouver

Fri Aug 11 – Sun Aug 13Exhibition Hall | Performance CentreINFO www.cacv.caSince the 1970s, the term “outsider art” has been used increasingly to refer to any artist who is self taught or has little to no contact with the mainstream art world or art institutions. Outsider art now includes visionary, intuitive, folk, naïve and aboriginal artists. What continues to be vastly understated is how much Art Brut has contributed to modern art.

The 2017 Outsider Art Festival features a three-day visual art exhibition showcasing several out-sider artists from British Columbia. There are also performances on the evening of Fri Aug 11 and Sat Aug 12 featuring outsider performance art and theatre.

The festival aims to increase the awareness about outsider artists and to challenge stereotypes about who and what is valued as art. The Outsider Art Festival provides an opportunity to exhibit, promote and validate the imaginative creative work of outsider artists.
