Section A: Media lnstitutions

Answer two guestions in this section.

1 Why would an international newspaper proprietor want to own either:

(a) a broadsheel and a tabloid newspaper;

or

(b) newspapers and other media (such as television companies)?

2 Choose one of the maior Brilish media organisations.

How has that organisation used industrial relations and/or new technology to maintain its market

position?

3 'There is no such thing as an "alternative" or "independent" media culture. We are all part of the

one industry now.'

How could such a claim be made and countered? Examine the contention critically.

4 What agencies "gatekeep'; the production of news?

What agencies regulate the press?

ln your answer, show in what ways gatekeeping and regulation differ, espeLially in their

outcomes.

5 To what extent is satellite technology changing the conditions of reception of certain media

products?

6 Contrast the moment of origin with the current state of one of the following:

(a) the Hollywood studio system;

(b) the British broadcasting system;

(c) the British record industry.

7 How might readers of print publications be considered an "audience" and audiences for cinema or

television be considered "readers"?

4' When you consider how sense is made of a media product, would you argue that its form

determines, contributes to, or has another term of relation to its meaning?Answer with examples, referring to two contrasting products of different media.

5 Why has there been recent public debate about one of the following:

(a) the de.regulation of broadcasting (radio and/or television);

(c) state subsidy of film production?

3 Consider how and why some of the films you have studied can be regarded as examples of 'Third

Cinema'.

4 (a) Examine the representation of women in a 'feminist'film and compare it with one which is, in

your opinion, anti-women.

(b) "Madonna undermines the traditional. stereotyped masculine view of women in the way that

she represents herself." Discuss with reference to at least one lilm and/or two pop videos.
