Answer two guestions in this section.
1 Why would an international newspaper proprietor want to own either:
(a) a broadsheel and a tabloid newspaper;
or
(b) newspapers and other media (such as television companies)?
2 Choose one of the maior Brilish media organisations.
How has that organisation used industrial relations and/or new technology to maintain its market
position?
3 'There is no such thing as an "alternative" or "independent" media culture. We are all part of the
one industry now.'
How could such a claim be made and countered? Examine the contention critically.
4 What agencies "gatekeep'; the production of news?
What agencies regulate the press?
ln your answer, show in what ways gatekeeping and regulation differ, espeLially in their

5 To what extent is satellite technology changing the conditions of reception of certain media
products?
