Your centre will pick one from the following topics:
Unit 1
Written examination 1 hour 30 minutes
20% of qualification
In this unit you will: - Study a period of around 100 years
- Focus over a broader timescale
- Study a range of significant topics
- Appreciate a range of historical
perspectives
- Study issues of cause and
consequences as well a change and
continuity

Unit 2
Written examination 1 hour 45 minutes
20% of qualification
In this unit you will: - Study the first half in Y12 and continue this course as unit 4 in Y13 - This is a depth study so it’s a shorter period
of history
- You will use a wide range of historical
evidence – looking at the value of three
historical sources
- You will study issues and look at how
historians have debated these issues.
- You will analyse and evaluate different
interpretations and discuss how and why they
have been formed

It is important to keep the knowledge you have gained at GCSE
fresh in your mind ready to start your A levels in September.
Why not spend some time looking over some past papers and
using the mark schemes to assess how well you’ve done.

Completing some of the following activities will help prepare you for studying
A Level History in September:
❖ Firstly, find out which topics you will be studying for Unit 1 and Unit 2
❖ Maybe look at the Specification for the main content of those topics in that unit.
❖ Look at the book recommendations and read around your topic areas for Unit 1
and Unit 2
❖ Maybe watch a film or documentary from the recommendations and produce
some notes on the topics.

Date When was it produced?
Author Who produced it? What was their background?
Audience Who was the intended audience? What do you know about this audience?
Motive What was the author’s purpose/motive? (entertain/inform/persuade/mislead?) How might these motives have influenced the perspective offered by the source?
Information What information does it provide? Where is the information drawn from? Is it produced in a way that we would expect a source of its kind to be produced? How reliable is it likely to be? Are there any limitations?
Tone What is the perspective and tone offered by the source? What insight does this give into the views and standpoints of the author? How reliable is it likely to be in light of previous considerations?
