As president of the Whitely Neighborhood Association I have to admit, I am very proud of where we are and what we are accomplishing. But we can never forget the true foundation and heart of any Neighborhood Organization is found in the word “neighbor”. We can never get so caught up in doing what we do that we forget to be who we are, “good neighbors.” It is one of the first things people notice when they come here to our neighborhood. It’s evident in how we greet one another and take time to help one another. It can be seen in our
willingness and pride in sharing our stories and history. It’s made apparent when we walk across the street to check on an elderly neighbor or around the block to see how our friend is doing. But if we are not careful I have found that we can get so immersed in day to day tasks and schedules, goals and projects that we forget that we are neighbors. What I do should not only affect you, but also include you. Whatever we do or accomplish as a neighborhood is enriched when you are added to the mix. It is our closeness and friendship, our alliance and kinship that must be valued, and everything else we do stems from that. As we come together as a neighborhood, we become a valuable piece of this community, and as we begin to connect with other pieces of our community, like a puzzle, we begin to create a picture of Muncie that others can clearly see and not only recognize as beautiful but also valuable.
A Letter from the President
President Frank T. Scott, Sr.
Citizens for Central is back in action! Citizens for Central is back on the job, greeting our students as they arrive for school on Tuesdays and Thursdays and helping out in any way we can. We handed out cookies for the open house in late August, freeing administrative staff to roam the halls and interact with students and families. The dependable folks in the Green T-Shirt Brigade brave the weather, the early morning traffic, and the urge to grab a few more minutes to sleep, choosing instead to show up with smiles, signs, fist bumps, treats, and encouragement for our Muncie Central High School students.
We would love to have you join us! We're at the front doors (facing Walnut) every Tuesday and Thursday, 7:30 - 8:00 a.m. We are a Whitely Community Council-sponsored group of local education advocates with deep roots and deep hearts in Muncie. If you'd like to join in the fun, contact Mary Dollison (765-288-1892), Jaynie McCallum (765-287-8785), or Lauren Bishop-Weidner ([email protected]). We'll get you a shirt and a sign! "These are all our children. We will profit by, or pay for, whatever they become." (James Baldwin)

Self-regulation is a key social skill that all children need to develop. Self-regulation allows kids to manage difficult emotions, behavior, and body movements in a variety of situations. Children with ADHD, sensory processing issues, or social difficulties often have difficulty developing these skills, and may require extra support. Try these tips from Dr. Carolyn Stratton’s “The Wonder Years” to help your child develop these essential skills.
Try to understand what your child is feeling and wanting
Describe your child’s feelings (don’t ask him what he is feeling because he is unlikely to have the words to tell you)
Label your child’s positive feelings more often than his negative feelings
Promoting your child’s self-regulation skills
Praise your child for self-regulation skills such as staying calm, trying again when frustrated, waiting a turn, and using words
Support your child when he is frustrated
Model and give your child the words to use to express his needs (e.g., “you can ask her for the truck”)
Help your child learn ways to self-regulate such as taking a deep breath
Model feeling language yourself. For example, “I am proud of you,” or “I’m having fun playing with you.”

YART is a Yard Sale for Art! YART began in Muncie with students at Ball State University and continues here and in several U.S. cities - a Muncie original! The Muncie YART is now held Downtown at Canan Commons, twice a year, Spring and Fall, on the First Thursday of every May and October during ArtsWalk. This community art sale, with a goal of making art affordable and accessible to everyone, brings together Artists and Art patrons in a casual and unique setting. The Fall 2018 Muncie YART will be held in conjunction with the Fall 2018 ArtsWalk on Thursday, October 4th, from 5-9pm. YART will ring the park at Canan Commons, Muncie's great urban greenspace park and amphitheater at the roundabout on South Walnut Street in Downtown Muncie, Indiana. The Pumpkin Trail & Glow will lead you right to YART! All forms of Art are welcome at YART! Art of all kinds, by all kinds of Artists! YART encourages interaction between Artists and the community, hoping to make Art more accessible, especially to those who think they cannot afford to buy Art for themselves and their homes. To this goal, all YART Art will be priced below $40! YART works to enable local creative entrepreneurs and to improve the Muncie economy. Shop local, support independents, enjoy your town! Last YART featured over 150

Artists! Each YART Artist will be present throughout YART to meet the public, discuss their Art, handle sales personally, and some Artists will be making Art LIVE at YART! This is a great opportunity to enjoy your family interacting with local culture in a dynamic, lively, and relaxed atmosphere. We love kids and there will be lots of fun stuff for them at Canan Commons too! The Fall 2018 Muncie YART will feature a wide variety of handmade jewelry, photography, clothing, oil/acrylic/watercolor paintings, fused glass, ceramics, knits, pottery, candles, toys, drawings, sculpture, lampwork glass, stuffed animals, digital art, mosaics, LIVE ART and LIVE MUSIC, the Pumpkin Trail & Glow, and so much more! Miss Moth (YART Director) and the YART Artists thank Cheryl Crowder of the Muncie Downtown Development Partnership and the Muncie Parks Department for their generous support! YART is an all-volunteer, zero-budget, community event. THANK YOU!

The US will host the 2018 International Miniature Aerobatic Club (IMAC) World Championships September 4-8, 2018, at the International Aeromodeling Center (IAC), the headquarters of the Academy of Model Aeronautics, in Muncie. The second world competition for the scale aerobatics discipline will bring more than 80
pilots from 19 countries to compete for individual and team honors. The competition will commence on September 4 with the opening ceremony and conclude on September 8 with an awards ceremony and banquet. The public is welcome to attend throughout the week and encouraged to attend the opening ceremonies on Tuesday evening. IMAC Operations Manager Doug Pilcher stated, “This is just like the Olympics, the Olympics of scale aerobatics.” The US finished in first place during the inaugural International Miniature Aerobatic Club (IMAC) World Championship in 2014 and would love to repeat the victory. Local support would be appreciated. Much like the Olympics, the opening ceremonies brings all the countries together displaying camaraderie among each country represented. “The more spectators the better,” Doug said. Scale aerobatics is the aerobatic operation of a radio-controlled scale model of a full-size
aerobatic competition airplane. Although other disciplines within the radio control community fly aerobatics, the requirement for scale aerobatics is that the model be replicas of types known to have competed in International Aerobatic Club (IAC) competition. Those who are interested in competing in this discipline have a wide choice of competitive airplanes from which to choose in both kit and ready-to-fly versions. Team USA 2018 has 12 members representing different classes including Unlimited, Advanced, Sportsmen, Intermediate, and Freestyle. The competition would not be possible without IMAC – International Miniature Aerobatic Club. Originally started as a Special Interest Group under AMA, the International Miniature Aerobatic Club (IMAC) has grown to represent and organize scale aerobatic competition on a global level. IMAC is a nonprofit organization focusing on pilot education and maintenance of rules and guidelines governing the sport.
