A Letter from Our Pastor Dear Friends, It took me a while to figure this out, but there is a consistency of Gospels within the Lenten season. For example, the first week of Lent is always the Temptations in the Desert. We hear how Christ was tempted for 40 days in the desert. Each Gospel brings a different nuance to the story, but ultimately its the same story. This week, the Scripture story we hear is quite unique because we just dont know what it is: the Transfiguration. Now, Im no scripture scholar, but I did my time in seminary and know a little about many things (which pretty much makes me dangerous, but thats a story for another time). Years ago I had to write a paper on this very pericope (yes, I had to look that up) and I wanted to share with you some of the thoughts I had from that very paper: A consistent theme that all commentaries wrestle with is that there is no exacting explanation of what the Transfiguration is. There is no clear-cut understanding of what occurred on that mountain. Some interpret the event as a change came over Jesus,or that he was transformed. However the consensus is that the use of the word transfigurationis most appropriate. Its meaning is somewhat ambiguous, properly reflecting the obscurity of this event. This word tells us that Jesus underwent some sort of transformation in the midst of his chosen Apostles. (If that isnt enough to make you want to go to sleep, well, I can give you the rest of my paper.) I recall my in-person review of this paper with my scripture professor, a very intimidating and scary priest. With steely eyes and a no-nonsense attitude, he asked me point blank - what is the Transfiguration? Sheepishly, I eeked out, Ahh, we dont know?Correct, he said, and gave me a B for the paper. Proud as I was to get this grade, (he was really a tough professor) I remained perplexed at this answer - we just dont know. Think about this, friends. If you dont care about what this is, it means you need to enter more fully into the mystery of Lent. If you do care, you need to enter more fully into the mystery of Lent. Much of our faith is simply what we dont know. To a seminarian writing a paper, it is just a question you hope you get correct. To someone who doesnt care, it is a question you havent had to wrestle with yet. To the person who cares, I believe it is more of the thin veil between this life and the next being drawn back just a little more. In the Transfiguration, Jesus gave his apostles a little something to help them to believe. He gives us the very same thing today. For those who have lost a loved one, who suffer each day with this loss, the Transfiguration is hope. Hope that we will someday join our loved ones gone from this life. This is a little bit of the taste of Lent. Forget the dessert or warm showers or whatever you have given up for Lent. Friends, it s not about you and me. Its about Christ who wants to give us something this season to help us believe. To believe that what Christ promises us is true. In Him, Fr. Rob

Finance & Administration: “How shall I make a return to the Lord for all the good He has done for me?” (Psalm 116:12) Our February Poor Box will be going to Isaiah’s Promise/St. Joseph’s House. Isaiah’s Promise was founded in 1995 to provide support, information, friendship and hope for families who decide to carry to term after receiving a severe or fatal prenatal diagnosis. We understood, first-hand, the need to support these families who, after making this courageous, loving decision to continue the pregnancy, often feel isolated and alone. Please support women making the courageous choice for life.

AIR CUARESMA
