The mission of the Georgia Transplant Foundation is to help meet the needs of organ transplant candidates, living donors, recipients and their families by providing information and education regarding organ transplantation, granting financial assistance and being an advocate for sustaining and enriching lives everyday.

Helping Transplant Recipients SucceedLast year, 802 organ transplants were performed in Georgia, and 57 of those recipients were children. As a nurse and hospital administrator, I see firsthand the challenges organ recipients face before and after transplantation, and the impact on the entire family. I also see how GTF provides support and assistance to ALL of Georgia’s pediatric and adult transplant recipients, candidates, living donors and their families.

In December, Johnny and his family celebrated his 10 year liver transplant anniversary! Look-ing at Johnny now, it’s hard to believe that he received his first liver transplant at just 8 months old and a second just before his third birthday. As an infant, Johnny spent several months in the hospital waiting for an organ transplant, battling chronic rejection, and recovering from two transplants. During these long months, Johnny’s family relied on support from friends, family, the hospital staff, and the Georgia Transplant Foundation. With a financial assistance grant from GTF, Johnny’s family was able to provide him with the daily care needed to have a successful transplant and recovery.

Today he is an active, thriving 6th grader. He enjoys playing with his two younger siblings, swimming, playing on the computer, and board games. Johnny’s parents strive to ensure that he maintains a successful transplant, does well in school, and is a happy, healthy teenager. Daily medications, monthly lab draws, and yearly biopsies are part of his healthcare plan. When Johnny began to struggle in school, his parents turned to GTF again for help. Through the Pediatric Assistance Program, Johnny was able to receive weekly tutoring at no cost to his family. He is now excelling in school and will continue to work to achieve high grades.

Thanks to you, GTF is able to help patients and their families in ways the hospital can’t. Pro-viding emergency funds has sustained many transplant recipients and their families through difficult times so they do not have to make the difficult choice of paying rent vs. paying for essential medications. Each year, GTF awards more than $1.2 million in financial assistance grants to help pay for the rising costs of insurance premiums, essential medications, travel expenses, and emergency household expenses. Together, you and GTF are truly saving lives!

I would like to thank all of our donors for supporting the Georgia Transplant Foundation and for continuing to improve the lives of Georgia’s transplant population.

Sincerely,

Amy Hauser, BSN, MBA, MHAPresident, Board of Directors, Georgia Transplant Foundation

Community Spotlight

Scott Law received a life saving kidney transplant 18 years ago. Just a year after his transplant, Scott was introduced to the Georgia Transplant Foundation and became a volunteer. Scott has continued to volunteer in the transplant community for more than 12 years.

After witnessing the positive impact that GTF has on thousands of transplant recipients each year, Scott de-cided he wanted to give back to GTF in an even bigger way. As a business partner of Voila Salon in historic downtown Roswell, Scott began to spread the word about GTF to his friends, co-workers, and clients. His clients were also eager to support GTF and were grateful that an organization existed in Georgia to help trans-plant recipients such as Scott.

Shortly thereafter, Scott, Margie and Manuela, hosted the inaugural Art & Soul fundraiser event to benefit GTF. Art & Soul features local artists, including Scott, and musicians. Funds are raised through sponsorship,

ticket sales, a silent and live auction and raffles. At-tendees of the event enjoy themselves at a fabulous party while giving back. As a Community Part-ner Group event, Art & Soul has raised more than $101,690 for Georgia's transplant community over the past five years.

In 2012, Community Partner Groups raised more than $100,000 to support Georgia’s transplant community. Hundreds of volunteers planned and implemented fundraisers across the state to raise money for GTF.

If you are interested in establishing a Community Partner Group in your area or if you would like to join one, please contact Cheryl Belair by email at [email protected] or call 678-514-1181.

Why I Give To GTF...

In 2009, Kirk Franz was diag-nosed with Primary Scleros-ing Cholangitis, a disease that causes chronic blockage of the bile ducts in the liver. Shortly thereafter Kirk received a liver transplant. As Kirk got back to his normal routine of work and family, he felt called to find a way to give back to other or-gan transplant recipients. Kirk established his own non-profit organization called the Swing Easy Hit Hard Foundation. Through his foundation, Kirk and his family host an annual golf tournament to benefit the Geor-gia Transplant Foundation and his transplant center.

“I love to golf and always enjoy playing in charity golf tournaments. Now I have a great reason to organize a tournament of my own to support a worthy cause that is very close to me. We chose to give back and support GTF because GTF helped my family and I when I went through my life-saving liver transplant.  GTF’s ability to refer mentors, provide information and financially match my personal GTF account to assist with the cost of my medication all played a huge role in my pre-transplant preparation and post-transplant recovery.  By continuing to support GTF with our fundraising efforts, we hope to that other patients and families can experience GTF’s sup-port like we did.”
