Lord Krishna said - Such a man of understanding acts with mind and intelligence perfectly controlled, gives up all sense of proprietorship over his possessions, and acts only for the bare necessities of life. Thus working, he is not affected by sinful reactions.

Special Programs at Hindu Temple Fall/Winter 2011
Children’s Program on September 17, 2011
During our September month‟s bhajan program, a special time was allotted for children to showcase their knowledge in religious story-telling, bhajan singing, gita chanting etc. Several children including Debanjan and Debanshi Chowdhury, Renea Sen, Shashwati Das etc participated in the program. The Prasad was sponsored by Naresh and Bigyani Das.
Presenting singer Usha Bhargav on November 19, 2011 Dr Usha Bhargav, a resident of Pennsylvania and a devotee of Hindu temple is a blessed singer. Debaki Nandan Chowdhury had invited Dr Bhargav to our monthly bhajan program in November. JOGA also invited Mr Mahesh, another accomplished musician to play Tabla. JOGA devotees as well as Dr Bhargav made the evening a very memorable evening with their special talents in singing. The sponsors for November month‟s program were Debaki Nandan and Anjana Chowdhury, Sandip and Moushumi Pattnaik, and Ajay and Neeta Mohanty. Mahamantra Program on December 18, 2011 More than 200 devotees thronged to Hindu temple on December 18, 2010 to participate in mahamantra chanting program organized by Jagannath Organization for Global Awarness (JOGA). After four hours of non-stop chanting of mahamantra everybody got Lord Jagannath‟s favorite chapana bhoga (fifty six items) mahaprasad prepared by volunteer devotees. It was the last bhajan program of the year and devotees were very generous in their services to the Lord. MrsTapati Dash (Nanda) had organized the chhapana bhoga. Hare KRISHNA, Hare KRISHNA, KRISHNA KRISHNA, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. These two lines were put into different musical vibrations by blessed singers and musicians of the Odia community as well as the temple community. Chanting brings focus as well as harmony to the body and mind system.
Chant mahamantra every day for a few minutes with complete devotion to God for a blissful life.

POEMS/STORIES/ESSAYS
September 11- A Tale of Two Times Nirlipta Daschaudhury, VA A patriot saint and an intrepid Hindu Monk of India who dazzled the west by his fascinating personality, scintillating intellect and powerful oratory is non other than Swami Vivekananda. He was a rare personality, a dynamic and dedicated life in short span. His multifaceted life and work and the inspiring message were for the spiritual regeneration of India and world. A spiritual genius of commanding intellect and power, Vivekananda crammed immense labor and achievement into his short life.
Vivekananda was encouraged by J.H. Wright, a professor of Greek at Harvard University, to represent Hinduism in the 1893 World Parliament of Religions in Chicago. When he expressed reservations saying he had no credentials, the professor replied, "To ask you, Swami, for your credentials is like asking the sun about its right to shine." He wrote about Vivekananda to the chairman of the committee on selection of delegates, "Here is a man more learned than all our learned professors put together.” Accepting an opportunity to represent Hinduism at Chicago's Parliament of Religions on September 11, 1893, Vivekananda started his first address with the famous words, "Sisters and brothers of America." The 7,000 people in the audience, immediately feeling the depth of his sincerity, rose to their feet and according to reports, “went into inexplicable rapture with standing ovation and clapping that lasted for more than two minutes.” When the applause subsided Swami began his speech by thanking the young

nation "in the name of the most ancient monastic order in the world, the Vedic order of sannyasins. He went on, “It fills my heart with joy unspeakable to rise in response to the warm and cordial welcome which you have given us. I thank you in name of the most ancient order of monks in the world; I thank you in the name of the mother of religions; and I thank you in the name of millions and millions of Hindu people of all classes and sects. I am proud to belong to a religion which has taught the world both tolerance and universal acceptance. We believe not only in universal toleration, but we accept all religions are true. I am proud to belong to a nation which has sheltered the persecuted and the refugees of all religions and all nations of the earth. I am proud to tell you that we have gathered in our bosom the purest remnant of the Israelites, who came to Southern India and took refuge with us the very year in which the holy temple was shattered to pieces by Roman tyranny. I am proud to belong to the religion which has sheltered and is still fostering the remnant of the grand Zoroastrian nation. I will quote to you, brethren, a few lines from a hymn which I remember to have repeated from my early boyhood , which repeated by millions of human beings : As the different streams having their sources in different paths which take through different tendencies, various though they appear, crooked or straight , all lead to Thee” Swami Vivekananda burst into the world like an energizer to rouse men from their spiritual stupor by the boom of his powerful voice. His words seem to gain greater force as they roll down the years. As per Swamiji, religion deals with the truths of the metaphysical world just as chemistry and the other natural sciences deal with the truths of the physical world. The book one must read to learn chemistry is the book of nature. The book from which to learn religion is your own mind and heart. No one form of religion will do for all. Each is a pearl on a string. No person is born to any religion. Every person has a religion in his or her own soul. Each life has a current running though it, and this current will eventually take it to God. The end and aim of all religions is to realize God. The greatest of all training is to worship God alone. Renunciation, service and sacrifice were his watch words. And, an embodiment of renunciation that he was, he wore himself out in the service of “God in Man.” Swamiji‟s philosophy had influence on entire world. The first governor general of independent India, Chakravarti Rajagopalachari, once observed that "Vivekananda saved Hinduism, saved India." According to Subhas Chandra Bose, Vivekananda "is the maker of modern India" and for Mohandas Gandhi, Vivekananda's influence increased his "love for his country a thousand fold." Aurobindo Ghosh considered Vivekananda as his spiritual mentor. Many years after Vivekananda's death, Rabindranath Tagore a Nobel Poet Laureate had said, "If you want to know India, study Vivekananda. In him everything is positive and nothing negative." Romen Rolland, a French novelist and Noble prize winner of Literature once said –“Vivekananda‟s words are great music, phrases in the style of Beethoven, stirring rhythms like the march of Handel choruses. I cannot touch these sayings of his at thirty years distance without receiving a thrill through my body like an electric shock”. He is a dynamic spiritual force to shape the future of humanity. In the great history of past thousand years, India has produced a great teacher in Swami Vivekananda who took India out of her isolation of centuries and brought her into the mainstream of international life. Vivekananda's arrival in the USA has been identified as the beginning of western interest in Hinduism and as a vital religious and philosophical tradition that might actually have something important to teach the West. Above all Swami Vivekananda helped restore a sense of pride amongst the Hindus, presenting the ancient teachings of India in its purest form to a Western audience. His tour to west also had a revitalizing effect in India. Previously, those who had gone to the West from India were full of apologies for the state of their country. He was not. He always spoke about his country with pride and respect. Thus, his work in the West instilled self-respect and self-confidence in the Indian psyche and helped India in its search for identity. It also helped to overcome the stereotypes and deep-rooted prejudices about India in Westerners‟ minds. Thus September 11, 1893 marked as an important date in history for the beginning of infusion of Hinduism into the West. Most of us involved in spiritual pursuits known of the many mysterious coincidences that seem to come from time to time. Some of these experiences leave us momentarily speechless. Such a coincidence

exists with the date of Swami Vivekananda's message. It has been described the number 108 has great significance in East. This first message of Swami Vivekananda in America, was the first link connecting the Eastern and Western spirituality, was given on September 11, 1893, exactly 108 years, before the day September 11, 2001, the date of the bombing of the World Trade Center. Whether by coincidence or precognition, it calls out for a closer reading of Swami Vivekananda's message and it's appropriateness for our current times. One hundred and eight years apart – two separate messages emerge from two distant cultures in the shores of America. One attempts to create a bridge between the east and the west through the message of love and unity among all beliefs; the other that of hatred and massacre of innocent lives. The same date and the two differing messages “changed the world”. The question for us is which message to adopt in our lives.

Chhapana Bhoga Ceremony on 18th December 2011 at Hindu Temple
Report By Trupti (Tapati Dash, Gaithersburg, MD) It comes once in a lifetime – the opportunity to organize the Chhapan Bhog program for Lord Jagannath – well, almost – if you do that in Puri. I came close – organizing that in Maryland, albeit, with full devotion both in thought and action. Let me share my experience with you. What I did:
1. When I was asked to shoulder the responsibility, I felt crushed under the burden, but thought to myself “Hey what the heck? He gave me the opportunity to serve Him and He will see me through.” Dragging a superior power to sharing your responsibility suddenly makes the load feel lighter. And there I was, setting forth with detached attachment.
7
Chirantana Issue 28, January 28, 2012
2. I discussed with my friend, Purnima and drew inspiration from the previous year‟s coordination efforts. The seniors encouraged and guided me too.
3. I took the group mail id from Naresh Bhaina and prepared an invitation email for all the devotees. I included the vital information, i.e. date, time, brief description of the program and attached the Chhapan Bhog recipe details and list of names of devotees who prepared the Prasad last year.
4. All good things take time and so did this one. It took a while to get response from the devotees despite a couple of reminders. Then they start trickling in and soon there was a deluge. Well, not exactly, but I was glad I could finally attract some attention.
5. Word of mouth is the key. A word on the social media is even more powerful. I didn‟t let go an opportunity to invite that friend‟s friend who might be interested in such things. I was sending out emails relentlessly and adding those new contacts to the group email list for future reference.
6. A sumptuous prasad will go miles. The word about it can fetch people from miles away too. I was careful to mention the exact time of prasad distribution in all communications.
7. Well, keeping time is important too. The fact that we got to the spot 20 minutes before the pooja was to commence did not help the cause too much. But, by that time I had practiced the „detached attachment‟ to perfection and remorselessly transferred the responsibility on to the Lord thinking that He was taking my test – how I could do everything in 20 minutes with a super-human capacity.
8. In most certainty, I failed the above test. But survived gracefully – thanks to the ubiquitous Indian Standard Time. When I arrived late, people arrived even later.
9. Eventually all arrived. Eventually we got hold of 56 glass bowls to put the offerings – thanks to Bandita Nani. Everything was perfect, eventually. Isn‟t God gracious?
10. Sometimes dinner takes precedence over aarti. People had the option to choose between instant gratification from the delicious prasad and the painful wait until after the aarti. Till today, opinion is divided on which option received a majority favor.
11. After the dinner was over, we tried to pack all left overs in ziplock bags. In the end, though, the dumpsters had a role to play.
12. Heart-felt “Thank You‟s” were the order of the day the next day. It must have taken a sizable bandwidth of my internet connection.
Mistakes and Suggestions:
1. Ignorance is bliss. Willful malice is not. Someone tried to send emails with wrong information
about the venue and timing. Befittingly, the email received an unceremonious demise from
people‟s attention. May it rest in peace in the cyber-morgue.
2. Decoration and preparation were haphazard due to our late arrival on the pooja day. The
advent of technology has given us alarm clocks on our cell phones, but misses out the vital step
of prodding us into complying.
3. Patience is virtue. If only we could have served all 56 items to all devotees that day cutting
through the chaos.
8
Chirantana Issue 28, January 28, 2012
4. Arranging the rice dishes, curry dishes, daal dishes, and the sweets on different tables would
have added order to aesthetics.
5. Somebody should take the responsibility to encourage a bigger presence at the Kirtan.
6. Doors to the dinner area should be dead-bolted and would need an admin override to open
before the designated dinner time.
7. Incidentals such as Ziploc bags, plates silverwares (read plastic knives and forks) is a shared
responsibility.
Cleaning after the pooja is definitely a shared responsibility. If Puri maharaja can clean before Lord Jagannath, what stops you from stooping down and picking up?
