Seven warning signs ofbreast cancer
Siete signos de alerta delcáncer de mama
Not everyone that has breast cancer has signs or symptoms. Also, one person can have different warnings signs from another person. Getting a mammogram (X-ray of the breast) is the best way to find breast cancer early. Finding it early means it is easier to treat.
Some warning signs of breast cancer are:
• A lump or pain in the breast
• Thickening or swelling of part of the breast
• Redness or flaky skin on the breast
• Pain in the nipple area
• Any change in size or shape of the breast
• Fluid other than breast milk from the
nipple, especially blood
Parkland provides mammograms and breast cancer education. Also, Parkland’s mobile mammography unit visits community clinics.

Abusing medicine is dangerous

It is important to use prescription medicine safely. Using medications, like pain and anxiety pills, for the wrong reason or too much can hurt your health.
It can cause:
• Addiction
• Breathing problems
• Heart problems
• Death
These medications are even more dangerous if you mix them with alcohol or other medicines. That’s why it is important to never use someone else’s prescription medicine or let other people use yours. Always listen to your doctor or pharmacist on how to take your medication.

Sexual violence can happento anyone

One in six boys and one in four girls will experience sexual violence before the age of 18. If someone forces you or a loved one into any type of sexual activity, this is called sexual violence.
Most of the time, parents and caregivers see the warning signs first. Signs can include:
• Changes in behavior or mood
• Lower school grades
• Staying away from social activities
Talking about sexual violence is hard. Experts at the Victim Intervention Program (VIP)/Rape Crisis Center at Parkland say the most important thing you can do when someone tells you they were hurt, is to believe them. Also make sure the person is safe and find ways to help the person heal.
Help is available at Parkland. If you or a loved one is being abused and need help right away, call the Crisis Line at 214.590.0430

Trick-or-treating with diabetes
Children who have diabetes can still enjoy treats on Halloween. Parkland Dietitian Sharon Cox says it is important to make sure kids with type 1 diabetes get enough insulin to balance the carbohydrates (carbs) in the candy. If a child has type 2 diabetes, follow their food plan to prevent very high blood sugar.
After trick-or-treating is over, it can be helpful to sit down with your child and ask them to pick out a few of their favorite candies. Trade the rest of the candy for other items, like stickers, pencils or bouncy balls.
Each of these are equal to about 15 grams of carbs:
• 11 candy corns
• Four Starburst
• Small packet of gummy fruits
• Five LifeSavers gummies
• Smarties (six grams of carbs in each roll)
• Three small Tootsie Rolls
• 15 Skittles
• Two Jolly Ranchers
• One Tootsie Pop
Watch for the amount (grams) of carbs in the sweets and always check the nutrition labels.
