If you love a pint of craft beer, brewed with passion and skill by real-ale enthusiasts rooted in their local communities,

the Chilterns is the place to explore. The area now boasts 10 breweries, offering a wonderful array of beers, many named after special places or historic figures linked to

this landscape. Some of these breweries are well estab-lished and their beer is enjoyed far and wide in the Chilterns. Others are micro-breweries, small-scale but perfectly formed, producing some fabulous beers. You’ll find craft beers on tap in local pubs, but why not visit a brewery (or two) to see how they are produced, meet the brewer and sample their creations?

We have listed the Chilterns’ breweries below, with a description of what they offer and how to visit them. Cheers!

A Tring Brewery

Pint of Side Pocket for a Toad anyone? Or how about some Ridgeway ale? Tring Brewery, which was established in 1992, takes great pride in choosing beer names linked to the local history, sayings, legends and countryside around Tring.

Visit the Brewery on a Saturday morning to find out more about their beers and see how they’re produced (booking essential). Or if you’re part of a group you can book an exclusive tour on a Thursday evening which includes food and plenty of beer to try.

Tring is surrounded by beautiful rolling countryside and a network of rural lanes: great cycling territory if you don’t mind a couple of hills. 15 mile and 26 mile circular routes passing Tring Brewery have been developed so why not plan a bike and brewery tour? Tring brewery is just 10 minutes walk from historic Tring High Street with its independent shops and cafes. Why not make a day of it, for information visit our Tring Market Town pages.

TRING BREWERY HP23 6HA 01442 890721 tringbrewery.co.uk

For over 36 years the Chiltern Brewery has been creating cask and bottled beers, using water from boreholes in the Chilterns’ chalk and British-grown malt and hops. It’s a family-run business, the oldest independent brewery in the Chilterns and produces one of the widest ranges of beer of any craft brewery in the country.

Based between Wendover and Aylesbury the Brewery offers tours most Fridays and Saturdays which include a visit to the brew house and a tutored beer and food tasting session. Book in advance or call on the day to check availability. Its Brewery Shop has an extensive selection of local foods, spirits and ciders as well as the full range of its beers (including some gluten-free ones).

There are great walks and views nearby at Coombe Hill, whose woods have carpets of bluebells in the spring. The Chiltern Brewery is just 2 miles from Wendover, with its many independent shops and cafes. Why not make a day of it, for informa-tion visit our Wendover Market Town pages.

C Malt the Brewery

To experience the Brewery fully book on to one of the monthly tours. Their shop and Tasting Bar is open every day so if you just fancy sampling the beers pop in. Their products range from light and fruity ales to deep and complex ones. The Brewery is an ideal place to stop for refreshment after a weekend walk – it is close to several circular walks in the lovely Misbourne Valley and is also less than two miles from Great Missenden railway station.

Great Missenden is home to the Roald Dahl Museum and the narrow main street, with its half-timbered and Georgian houses, shops and pubs, inspired many easily recognized features of Dahl’s books. Why not make a day of it, for information visit our Great Missenden pages.

Haresfoot was established in 2014 by a group of eight friends and businessmen who wanted to open the first brewery in Berkhamsted for a century.

In a short time they have built a reputation for good quality pale ales and bitters. In 2015 their ‘All-Rounder’ pale ale was chosen as the official beer of the Cricket Writers’ Club during the Ashes!

Following an opportunity for expansion the Brewery has moved to Chesham. It offers regular brewery tours and also runs music and comedy events. It is close to the Chilterns Cycleway, offering the chance to combine a ride and a pint.

There are plenty of great walks from the market town of Chesham out into the Chilterns countryside, if you fancy stretching your legs before or after a session at the Brewery.

Brewing since 2012, this brewery is based on a farm in the centre of the Chilterns at Prestwood. It occupies what was once a milk bottling hall. There may not be any dairy cows now, but the spent mash gets fed to the farm’s pigs.

E Mad Squirrel BreweryThis is one of Hertfordshire’s most innovative and active breweries. Based in Potten End, near Berkhamsted, it has developed a range of core beers from pale ales to bitter and pilsner, with some winning awards from CAMRA.

Brewery tours are run on Saturdays and it’s advisable to pre-book. Their Potten End location is close to the wood-lands of the National Trust’s stunning Ashridge Estate. Make a day of it by hiring bikes (standard or electric) from Lovelo Cycle Works in Berkhamsted and taking a ride through Ashridge to the Brewery.

If you don’t have time for a full tour you can drop in to one of the four craft beer, bar and bottle shops run by the Brewery where you can sample their products plus other craft beers from around the UK. You’ll find them in the historic market towns of Berkhamsted, Chesham, Amersham and in High Wycombe. Why not make a day of it, for information visit our Chilterns Market Towns pages.

F paradigm BreweryFinding themselves at a loose end at the same time, two friends with a lifelong passion for real ale decided to set up their own brewery, and the result in 2015 was Paradigm Brewery, located in the lovely village of Sarratt in the Chess Valley.

Their beers have already started winning awards and are being supplied to local pubs. The Brewery does not run official tours but is open on weekdays – call in advance to arrange a visit. Their love of their village home has resulted in a beer flavoured by an outstand-ing local product of Sarratt – watercress!

The last working watercress beds in the Chilterns are found in Sarratt, fed by the clear waters of the River Chess. If you are visiting the Brewery it is well worth taking a walk through the beautiful Chess Valley. Paradigm brewery is located 5 miles from the historic market town of Amersham with its many speciality shops, cafes and museum.

One of the best-known and longest-estab-lished micro-breweries of the Chilterns, Rebellion has been brewing near Marlow since 1993. In 2015 it expanded its brewing capacity and installed a new brewery shop which is one of the best-stocked in the area. In addition to all their beers, it also sells local food, cider, spirits and a wide selection of wines.

The Brewery produces three core beers, four seasonal ales and 12 new monthly beers, so there is something for everyone. You can try them on one of Rebellion’s Open Nights, which take place on the first Tuesday of every month. It’s a relaxed, sociable occasion with a BBQ available and the brewery owners on hand to describe their brewing methods.

The historic market town of Marlow is an excellent base for making a weekend of it in the Chilterns – it has fine restaurants and pubs, attractive walks along the Thames and river cruises run in the summer.

Old Luxters ales come with the highest commen-dation, having been awarded the Royal Warrant by the Queen in 2007. Brewed on the edge of the picturesque Hambleden Valley near Henley, this brewery is part of Chiltern Valley, a family-run business which also includes a vineyard and winery, cellar shop, cookery school and a farm-house B&B.

They specialise in bottle-conditioned ales, includ-ing a golden IPA, fruity Damson Ale and a malty Dark Roast ale. Behind the scenes tours of the brewery and winery are run most days of the week and booking in advance is highly recommended.

The B&B on site offers the opportunity to make a short break of it and enjoy all the other things to do in the area. The Hambleden Valley is full of picture-postcard villages (often seen in Midsomer Murders), excellent country pubs and good walks. The bustling riverside town of Henley-on-Thames is only five miles away.

Brakspear’s Bell Street Brewery was only founded four years ago, but its heritage stretches back to 1711, when William Brakspear founded a brewery on Bell Street – just yards from where the microbrewery now stands.

Brewing continued in Henley until 2002, when the brewery was sold, but restored in 2013 when the new owners of Brakspear resolved to bring brewing back to the town. The Bell Street Brewery opened that year and immedi-ately started to brew Brakspear Special – a beer that had been popular in Henley for many years and was welcomed back by the town’s beer lovers. Special is now brewed permanently at the Bell Street Brewery, as well as a number of seasonal ales. The Bell Street Brewery is located behind the Bull on Bell Street pub, in the heart of Henley. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a pint of Brakspear Special or other cask ale which are available in Brakspear pubs only.

Lovibonds in Henley was set up by one man, Jeff Rosenmeier, in 2005, to brew local, authentic, distinctive craft beers. Like other micro-brewery entrepre-neurs, Jeff was following his passion and turned a home-brewing hobby into a business. Lovibonds now produces seven year-round beers, which include British and American pale ales, wheat beer, a smoked porter and a craft lager.

The Brewery’s Tasting Room is open on Friday evenings and during the weekend, and as the Brewery is conven-iently located in the heart of Henley-on-Thames it’s a great place to drop in to while you are enjoying this lively river-side market town. Two hour tours can be booked if you want something more in depth, and if you like music with your beer there are occasional live band evenings. There is even a beer school for real enthusiasts.

Located right in the south of the Chilterns, in a 300 year-old barn in the little village of Dunsden Green near Reading, the Loddon Brewery has seven core beers and has been winning awards since it was set up in 2003 which you can try and purchase in the brewery shop on site.

Tours can be booked for groups of 15-30 people and feature a talk on the brewing process from the Brewery director, lots of beers to sample and a fish-and-chip supper.

Dunsden Green has superb cycling and walking on the doorstep: the Chilterns Cycleway passes through the village and the well-signed Chiltern Way and Thames Path National Trail walking routes are nearby.

An excellent opportunity to combine a day out enjoying the countryside with some tasty local beer! The Loddon Brewery is located just 6 miles from Henley-on-Thames with its wonderful river-side location.
