We are very lucky to have a professional illustrator collaborate with Ark Pioneer this week! They are going to provide us with a mastery in illustration workshop, so that we can develop our illustrative skills and help us to come up with new and exciting comic book ideas!
“I’ve been drawing ever since I can remember, I started before I could even write. From a young age I have always loved illustration books, the drawings are so beautiful and captivating.
For me drawing is an escape into an imaginary world, full of possibilities. When you start drawing it’s an adventure, during the drawing process you can discover new things. For example, a small doodle can transform into something special, that has meaning and can actually be very powerful. Also, sometimes it is just fun to create something new.
Drawing can also help you process a range of emotions,
sadness, anger, anxiousness, even happiness; it’s a cathartic experience. You can use drawing to help you through difficult times, it is a space for healing.
Imagination is such a powerful tool, sometimes people think that imagination is purely for children but it’s good to cultivate your imagination even when you’re an adult and bring that magic into everyday life.” 2
“In my drawings you never see his face without the cardboard head because I want him to remain anonymous, he could be anyone of us. The cardboard mask gives him the confidence and bravery to become somebody that he doesn’t feel he can be without it on.
Superheroes normally have super powers like being able to fly or have super strength, here everything is based on the imaginary world but in my drawings it is about the superpowers that we all have. For example, a superpower can be acts of kindness. These are the small things that we do for each other but in the eyes of the person you are helping, you are a superhero – you change their world. The mask gives you the self-belief so that you can be brave enough to show your super powers without your mask on.”
His name is Super Cardboard Head!

An art journal is a visual diary where you practice making art while expressing yourself at the same time. Think of it as a journal or a diary and just add this artistic element to it. An art journal can be anything, really. Anything goes as long as you do it for yourself, have fun and use it to express yourself.
You can create every day, i’s so easy to pick up a journal and start creating. There’s no fuss with canvases, no pressure to make it perfect. The bottom line is, having an art journal lets you make small art every day without any pressure of having to finish a piece.
The best thing about the combination of art and journaling is that it covers two amazing things and binds them together in a beautiful balance of self-expression. On top of all that, your artistic skills develop more quickly. Also, you become aware of your style, what you like or don’t like, and you learn many new art techniques with so much ease and no pressure. 11
Activity: Create an art journal.
The idea is to create one page per day. On that page you can sketch or write about your day with the focus on how you are feeling.
You can choose any object, shape or colour to express yourself. In some art journals people also write quotes, poetry or lyrics to describe their current mood.
Remember that the work doesn’t have to be perfect, it’s not about the outcome. This is an opportunity for you to express yourself freely in your own way.

Ideas for your art journal entries…
Emotions
Deal with emotions like anger and sadness through these
helpful exercises.
1.Draw or paint your emotions. In this exercise, you'll focus entirely on painting what you're feeling.
2.Create an emotion wheel. Using color, this activity will have you thinking critically about your emotions.
3.Use line art. Line is one of the simplest and most basic aspects of art, but it can also contain a lot of emotion.
Use simple line art to demonstrate visually how you're
feeling.
4.Design a postcard you will never send. Are you still angry or upset with someone in your life? Create a
postcard that expresses this, though you don't have to
ever send it.
5 Draw a mountain and a valley. The mountain can represent a time where you were happy, the valley, when
you were sad. Add elements that reflect specific events
as well.
6. Draw Your Heart. Draw your feelings in a heart formation.

Relaxation
Art can be a great way to relax. Consider these
exercises if you're looking to feel a little more laid
back.

and just relax.

touch and sensitivity.
5. Let yourself be free. Don't allow yourself to judge your work. Express yourself with any line, shape or
colour.
6. Only use colours that calm you. Create a drawing or a painting using only colours that you find calming.
7. Make a zentangle. These fun little drawings are a great tool for letting go and helping reduce stress.
8. Colour in a design. Sometimes, the simple act of colouring can be a great way to relax. Find a
colouring book or colour in your own design.
