Finnlines set to welcome the Admirals of the Fleet

Emanuele GrimaldiCEO

Last year and this year will go down in history as tough times. We have had to co-exist with the pandemic, with all that this means for our health, freedoms and business activities.

At Finnlines, we can already begin to look forward to the delivery of a series of five newbuldings, including two 1,100-passenger-capacity ro-

pax vessels of a specification hitherto unseen on the North Sea and Baltic trades.

THESE TWO SUPERSTAR CLASS SHIPS, the Finn-sirius and the Finncanopus, are set to be the Admirals of the Finnlines Fleet.

Like their predecessors they will carry both passengers and cargo, though capacity has been considerably increased.

In the trade press they are being referred

to not as ro-pax vessels but as ‘cruise ferries’, and not without reason given the attention paid to onboard facilities.

IN ADDITION TO FERRYING PASSENGERS AND FREIGHT from A to B, we expect the brace of newbuilds to be a destination in their own right.

That said, they have been designed with the “necessary” traveller in mind, not the holiday-maker.

This means they will boast luxury aimed at passengers seeking to take full advantage of the serene tranquillity of areas of natural

beauty such as the Åland archipelago. These travellers, whether alone or accom-

panied, are often sailing for business rea-sons and are therefore seeking to enjoy the view – an experience that will be enhanced with large, panoramic windows – rather than on-board entertainment such as clowns and cabarets.

THERE WILL BE A WIDE-RANGE of cabin cat-egories including four deluxe cabins and two suites, as well as a spa, gym, yoga studio and à la carte restaurant as part of accentu-ated focus on wellbeing.

Unnecessary walls have been done away with in order to increase the feeling of space on board as well as access to the views. All public areas will be on the upper decks.

Designers have made plans to use lighting to enhance the ambiance and replicate the colour schemes of Scandinavian forests in cabins.

WE KNOW OUR PASSENGERS are often ecologi-cally aware and so will note with interest that these newbuilds have afforded Finnlines the opportunity to introduce a range of innova-tion, including paperless technology and higher emphasis on both recycling and the use of local suppliers for retail and catering.

Emissions of sulphur and carbon dioxide, the greenhouse gas, have been reduced compared to previous vessels.

These sisterships will bring about not just a return to normality but a fresh, improved passenger experience.

WHILE THE FOCUS may be on the passenger side of the business, the brace of vessels will also boast 5,100 lane metres for rolling freight, a high capacity.

Accommodation and facilities have been designed to suit the needs of both passen-gers and truck drivers.

WE VERY MUCH LOOK FORWARD to the arrival of these two Admirals, which will undoubtedly mark the beginning of the next era for our carrier.

Enjoy this edition of Finnlines News.

Our passengers are ecologically aware and we will also introduce many innovative

choices in the ships’ interior design.

The Next Generation Superstar vessels will offer an enhanced customer experience to passengers, highlighting the Archipelago. The scenery can be enjoyed through panorama windows and a spacious outdoor deck. All public areas will have their own design and service concepts and the heart of the new vessels will be the Arcade area, including Finnlines’ largest Duty-Free Shop yet, approx. 400 m2. New features will include some new cabin categories, a spa and a gym, a yoga studio and an A la carte restaurant.

Changes in Finnlines Group’s Executive Management

Sustainable travel with Finnlines awardedFinnlines has been awarded the Sustainable Travel Finland label by Visit Finland. This is a recognition of Finnlines’ long-term work towards sustainability.

Finnlines is committed to long-term work for the environment by target-ing investments in energy efficiency and eco-efficient services. The

Company has been consistent in setting short-term goals to achieve excellent long-term results. Compared with 2008 figures, the Finnlines fleet has reduced its carbon dioxide emissions by more than 30%. In line with the strategy of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the Company aims to cut its absolute CO2 emissions by at least 50% by 2050.

A greener way to travelEnvironmental protection is an important part of Finnlines’ daily work. This means,

for example, optimised schedules and route planning, running at optimal speed, load and trim. Skilled personnel play a significant role in achieving ambitious goals.

A high utilisation rate means better eco-efficiency. The best results are achieved by combining passenger and cargo transport and this is what Finnlines’ ro-pax service does. The high utilisation rate of the routes and ves-sels makes responsible travel possible.

Sustainable Travel Finland labelVisit Finland has developed the Sustainable Travel Finland programme, which is aimed at Finnish tourism operators to develop more sustainable practices. Participants go through various phases, including mapping the current state and development needs. To qualify for the Sustainable Travel Finland label, a participant must meet economic, ecological, social as well as cultural criteria. The programme includes regular auditing and renewal of the label.

In brief• We are committed to the

UN Sustainable Develop-ment Goals.

• We are committed to the IMO target to reduce CO2 emissions by 50% by 2050.

• We offer an eco-friendly, safe and secure way to travel with cargo.

• We operate a reliable sea-way within Europe.

• We comply with the eco-nomic, ecological, social as well as cultural sustainabil-ity criteria set out by Visit Finland.

voyage is time-efficient for the logistic industry.

“Our new vessels will respond sub-stantially better to our customers’ needs, offering required capacity at all times, punctual schedules and reliable opera-tions,” says Raimo.

More choices to passengersIn addition to freight, Finnlines will also focus on passengers in the future. The ro-pax vessels Finnsirius and Finncano-pus will offer an enhanced travel experi-ence to passengers. “We have put a lot of effort into making our customers’ stay on board even more comfortable. We expect that our new service concept will attract

new target groups,” says Kielo Vesikko, Head of Passenger Services, Finnlines.

In the future, passengers travelling without vehicle will also be welcome to Finnlines’ vessels on its Finland– Sweden route. The passenger terminals and their services, as well as public transport to the port, will be improved.

The systematic feedback collected from passengers inspires to develop new service concepts on board and on shore. “We have a continuous dialogue with our customers and at the same time we continue to analyse customers’ ex-pectations and market trends. Our new vessels will offer passengers a pleasant stay onboard while enjoying the views of

Archipelago,” Vesikko says. The number of passengers on all

Finnlines’ routes increased all the way up to 2020, until the coronavirus changed everything. In the first half of 2021, 228,000 passengers travelled with Finnlines.

“We are confident that passengers will return once the strict travel restrictions that were imposed to hinder the virus’ spread are relaxed. It is safe to travel on Finnlines’ spacious vessels,” Vesikko concludes.

Making green wavesFinnlines has made massive invest-ments in sustainability and worked hard to reduce the carbon footprint for many years. Every-day actions, like timetable and route planning, running on optimal speed, load and trim, improve energy efficiency.

Long-term, environment-considerate actions and the investments in new vessels allow Finnlines to reduce its environmental impacts. “It is important to continue to focus on the long term. Our significant investments in new vessels prove that we are dedicated to be at the cutting edge of developments,” Raimo concludes.

Significant improvement in the Finland–Sweden connection Finnlines Superstar ro-paxes will set new standards when they start operating on the Finland–Sweden route in 2023. The service concept on the new ships, both in freight and passengers, will raise the bar considerably compared to the existing ships on the route.

To meet the customers’ demand, Finnlines will deploy a new, next generation vessel type for its Finland–Sweden traffic. This will

create better economies of scale and reduce CO2 and other emissions.

Capacity growsMS Finnsirius and MS Finncanopus are set to start operating in July and December 2023 in the Finland–Sweden traffic. They will be larger than the existing Star class vessels and will be Finnlines’ flagships both in terms of size and technology.

With a length of about 235 metres, their loading capacity will be 5,100 lane metres for rolling freight and 1,100 for passengers. In practice, this means that the vessels can carry approximately 200 passenger cars and 290 trailers or 250 trucks per voyage.

Together, Finnsirius and Finncanopus will increase the freight capacity by over 40% compared with the current ships on

the route. Even more impressive is the growth in passenger capacity, which is over 120%. “Freight will continue to be our main business area, but with new vessels we can also serve a wider market segment,” says Antonio Raimo, Line Manager, Finnlines. “Such vessels will allow us to better fit and maximise the capacity intake for both pas-sengers and cargo segments.”

Faster freight servicesSuperstar ro-pax vessels are designed with the focus on fast and efficient cargo handling in order to guarantee Finnlines’ customers a short turnaround time. Auto-mooring at berth will ensure faster port operations, which will allow more efficient cruising times with an improved environmental footprint.

Finnlines’ Naantali–Långnäs– Kapellskär service is especially planned and scheduled for smooth and effortless travel and freight transportation. Furthermore, the ports are strategically in a good location and the sea

“Our new service concept will attract new target groups”, says Kielo Vesikko.

“These ultra green vessels serve a wider market segment”, says Antonio Raimo.

Hot and coldTemperature sensitive and perishable cargo must be monitored during the sea voyage, but Finnlines’ crew is proud of keeping units running.

All Finnlines vessels carry sensitive cargo, “ELE units”, which must be plugged to the vessel’s electrical system. To eliminate fire

risks, diesel engines must be switched off before loading onboard.

“We carry a wide mix of cargo, some of which, like fish, berries and pharma-ceuticals, must be cooled, whereas oth-ers, like tank containers for chemicals, request either cooling or heating,“says Mika Lievonen, Master on the ro-ro vessel Finnkraft. (At the time the article was written, Lievonen worked as a Chief Officer on the ro-pax vessel Finnlady)

ELE units should be properly main-tained and they must be in good working condition before loading. If a driver ac-

companies the unit, it is his or her duty to connect the electric cable to the cargo unit and to ensure that temperature set-tings are correct, and that the unit starts running in an electric mode.

If the unit is unaccompanied, the cus-tomer should give the allowed tempera-ture limits and a phone contact who can be reached 24 hours a day if there are deviations in temperature settings.

“Vehicles transporting animals are not ELE cargo, but sometimes tempera-ture control is necessary as ventilation ensures that also four-legged travellers have a pleasant sea voyage,” Lievonen adds.

“ELE whisperers” monitor cargo with pride Reefer units, i.e. refrigerated cargo units, are tricky, one could say mysteri-ous. Lievonen praises the deck crew for their professional pride and dedication to monitoring valuable goods. There are numerous different ELE equipment models installed on trailers and tank con-tainers, almost all models have “special features” that the crew needs to know of. “We have a long history of carrying temperature-controlled goods and our crew has learned some tricks to keep units running, even though some may not start at the first attempt. Nice words, knocking, tapping and hugging may be as important as manuals. Temperatures are controlled and registered at certain intervals.”

In the port of destination, the crew checks the discharging schedule to minimize the time the units are without electricity. Cargo can be booked as “top very sensitive” to guarantee that electric-ity supply is not interrupted for more than 15 minutes before the unit is discharged from the vessel. The more accurate and detailed ELE information the customer has given to the booking, the better the ship´s crew can take care of the ELE units.

Smart ships and new technologyTwo Superstar ro-pax vessels will join the Finnlines fleet in 2023 and these vessels come with the latest in green technology.

The next generation ro-pax vessels will be built with the top technical and environmental innovations and applica-tions in mind.

Air lubricationAn innovative air lubrication system uses a series of air release units in the flat bottom of a vessel. The system creates microbubbles that travel the full length of the hull. This reduces friction, and thus improves energy efficiency.

Shore-side electricity and energy batteriesSuperstar ro-pax vessels will be equipped with shore power connection, which allows them to turn off auxiliary engines and plug into an electrical grid while in port. This solution makes port calls practically emission-free and at the same time reduces noise in port.

The vessels will also be fitted with lithium-ion battery systems. The electricity from batteries can be used

for electric power demand at sea and during maneuvering to power the bow thrusters instead of generating the power by auxiliary engines.

Readiness for auto-mooringAn automated mooring system replaces traditional mooring with ropes. The mooring system is controlled remotely from the vessel’s bridge, ensuring safe and reliable operations and enhanc-ing personnel safety as rope handling involves risks. Auto-mooring speeds up the mooring and unmooring of ships, minimizing turn-over time in ports. Hence, the average speed at sea can be reduced, which saves fuel and cuts emissions.

Energy efficient enginesSuperstar ro-pax vessels will feature Wärtsilä’s main engines, bow thrusters, and hybrid package. The package in-cludes an energy management system for performance optimisation.

Highly sensitive cargo, like pharmaceuticals, is shipped safely to its

destination.
