Getting an audience with Santa Claus isn’t difficult. After all, a child can do it.

But an actual interview is something else entirely. This simple Q&A required a series of phone calls and

repeated emails before clinching a moment of Santa’s time.

Santa’s schedule becomes crowded with mall visits, parades and preparation for the big night. Apparently, even before Christmas, he chalks up a lot of frequent flyer miles.

And somewhere along the trajectory of 24/7 electronic

everything, Santa got hip and hired an agent who insists on sitting in on the interview.

Maybe Santa fears the “gotcha” question. And he should, especially from this intrepid reporter. After all, led by a team of magical flying reindeer and over the course of 24 hours, he delivers toys to millions of children around the world.

Seriously? If this is true, it’s an amazing story. If not, we’ve been lied to for far too long.

A trick question opens the inquiry:BGHL: When you were a kid, what did

you want to be when you grew up? Did you always want to be a Santa?

SC: I didn’t grow up wanting to be anything. I am Santa. (He tugs at his beard, which, for the record, remains firmly attached.)

Next trick question, in an effort to get him to admit that he’s a retired school bus driver working weekends:

BGHL: What do you do for a living in the off-season?

SC: There is no off-season. I’m a toymaker. That’s what I do.

If nothing else, Santa is determined to carry on a charade, but I’m beginning to think perhaps he really is something—if not magical at least sincere. Obviously, it’s time to double down.

BGHL: Santa, there has been a lot of controversy. Who’s your favorite reindeer? Donner? Rudolph? Blitzen?

Rather than answer that question outright, he hems and haws about the necessity of a team effort and compares reindeer to offspring wherein parents don’t have favorites.

BGHL: OK, then. Besides Rudolph, how do you tell them apart?

SC: Don’t you read? (An eye roll for the illiterate journalist.) I “whistle, and shout and call them by name.”

How can a jolly old elf act so reasonable and a seasoned reporter appear so inept? It seems that Santa has the upper hand. Fortunately, preparation (read: Google searches) turned up an interesting backstory that probably isn’t even true. But it will make a great sound bite if the national media picks it up:

BGHL: How did you find the flying

Santa

reindeer? I read on a blog that you threw them off a cliff to see which ones could actually take flight.

SC: No, no, no. We play reindeer games, and all reindeer can fly. Of course, some reindeer are better fliers than others. And as you know, I keep very careful records.

He emphasizes the last three words, and I imagine him mentally searching for the page with my name on it.

BGHL: OK, what exactly are reindeer games?

SC: Well, there are two kinds. There are times when they play together, and then there are the reindeer cliques. Some reindeer can be a little mischievous. I didn’t like what they did to Rudolph, but it wasn’t until one foggy Christmas Eve that all their teasing came to light. Ho, ho, ho…came to light. Get it? Like Rudolph’s nose?

BGHL: Sure, I get it. Which, by the way, Rudolph’s red nose—eggnog? Bourbon? What’s going on there, Santa?

His agent jumps in, which surprises us both because we had forgotten he was even listening. The guy makes up a story about the vascular construction of the reindeer nose and lichen and berries in the snow, something about keeping the animal warm in winter.

Whatever.I am still trying to believe in Santa. But

I absolutely can’t believe he relies on an agent. It seems a seasoned celebrity such as Santa wouldn’t need a 20-something marketing guy hovering close by. And because I already know what I’m getting for Christmas (a few extra pounds and a bill from Visa) and because he is obviously going to continue his charade, I figure I should go big or go home.

BGHL: Santa, what’s in the pipe? And does it have anything to do with all the cookies being gone?

SC: Ho, ho, ho. No, no, no comment. His agent cuts the lights. “Time’s up.

Santa has another engagement.”BGHL: Already? But I have more

questions. “Well, I’m sorry ma’am. You should have

thought of that when you were busy trying to paint Santa as a loon.”

BGHL: Hey, wait. I am a journalist. I’ve got to ask the tough questions. People want to know: Is Santa for real?

Despite his shiny new management team designed to protect him from just such a grilling, and despite the obvious overreach by this reporter, he answers my question anyway. And yes, there was a twinkle in his eye and a smile on his face…

SC: That’s the easiest question you’ve asked me so far, and I can answer in one single word: Believe.

Fifty years ago, Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass released the stop-motion animated movie Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer to a generation of people who knew what it meant to get up from their chairs, adjust the volume, turn the channel and periodically smack the side of their black-and-white television to address the spastic motion of the horizontal hold.

Fifty years later, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer remains the longest-running Christmas TV special, outpacing Frosty the Snowman and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Talk about going down in history.

In the movie, misfit toys, misfit elves and most of all a misfit reindeer with a shiny nose try to prove to decades of American schoolchildren that it is ultimately a hero’s welcome if they simply embrace their individuality.

Looking at the kids today with their text messages to the North Pole and Google Earth maps of Santa’s route, it’s hard to imagine this simpler time.

Santa’s reindeer are uniquely suited to their mission. Rangifer tarandus are in the same family as caribou, and that means they can forage frozen landscapes with ease. Tundra is their food of choice, and combined with a circulatory system that steals from the extremities to heat the animals’ organs, there is no doubt that reindeer are hardy creatures.

But upon further investigation, it seems those rugged animals with their beefy antlers may not always be what they seem. When it comes to those eight reindeer hauling Santa and his magic sleigh, there is the question of gender. Are Santa’s reindeer male or female?

It’s difficult to really tell by their names, because for each Donner, there is a Vixen. For each Comet, there is a Cupid.

Maybe the science will shed some light.

According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, male reindeer spend October mating with as many females as possible, and this depletes their energy and their fat reserves, so naturally, they wouldn’t have the energy to make the trip.

Females on the other hand keep warm thanks to extra layers of fat that they store on their back legs. So females would have more energy for the trip. And female reindeer keep their antlers until early spring, whereas male reindeer drop their racks in late autumn.

Does this mean that iconic image of Santa Claus and his sleigh illuminated by the big yellow glow from the light of a full moon is actually the perfect poster for girl power?

The female reindeer, it seems, is both large and in charge—at least of Santa’s sleigh. And that’s great news for the old elf, because everybody knows that if female reindeer get lost, they’ll definitely stop and ask for directions.

Christmas puppies are a mixed blessing. Canine cuties can top children’s wish lists, but the debate lingers over

whether or not parents should indulge their requests. A puppy can be a wonderful addition to

a child’s life, but Christmas may or may not be the best time to get one.

Some trainers recommend waiting until after the holidays to add man’s

best friend to the family tree. That’s because this busy time of year with the chaos of traveling, extra guests and even the revelry of gift giving means the puppy’s needs might be lost in the

shuffle.Even renowned dog lover Rudd Weatherwax,

the man who trained Lassie, believed that giving children puppies for Christmas turns a living,

breathing animal into just another toy that can be cast aside. He suggested waiting until things calm down

after the holidays to bring a puppy home. For Christmas

morning, wrap up a new leash or a book about how to train a dog and enclose a card to let the child know that the puppy will come later.

Dr. Luke Griffith, a veterinarian at Three Springs Animal Hospital in Bowling Green, says that if parents aren’t sure their child is responsible enough to take care of a puppy, then they might want to start with another type of animal.

He says fish are a good start for really young children because all they have to do is remember to feed them. “Besides that, there is no obedience training, and fish won’t chew up your furniture,” he jokes.

Rabbits are another good option, according to Griffith, because during the school day, a rabbit can be perfectly content confined in a cage. “Then children can get the rabbit out after school and play with it,” he says.

If a puppy is already on the short list of possible gifts, parents should be willing to commit to helping their children take care of it. Essentials such as vet visits, immunization schedules and the proper diet become a parent’s responsibility.

For help with what to expect in the first year of the puppy’s life, Griffith offers some essential advice.

“The first thing I would ask someone is: What size adult dog do they want—3 pounds or 190 pounds?” he says.

He points out that adopting from the Humane Society means that pet owners don’t always have the peace of mind of knowing the animal’s lineage. Without that information, it is more difficult to guess how big the puppy will get.

He says a puppy should be around 8 weeks old before it is adopted or purchased. At 8 weeks, the puppy is ready to be weaned, and the weaning process is a good time to bond with new owners. Breeders especially might not have time to help each animal through the weaning process. “So if the puppy is going home for Christmas, the sooner the better,” Griffith says.

There are, however, built-in costs associated with caring for a puppy, beyond the food and occasional chew toy. Proper vaccinations are very important, according to the doctor. The parvovirus is at the top of Griffith’s list of concerns, and he strongly recommends vaccinating against it. Parvovirus is a virus that gets in the dog’s intestines and can cause dehydration and death.

A series of four vaccines is required to allow the animal’s body to recognize and fight the pathogen. A puppy needs all four shots before it can be considered immune, and the vaccines are administered three weeks apart before the age of around 16 weeks.

Rabies is another concern, as is what Griffith calls “kennel

cough,” which is a highly contagious respiratory disease that dogs pass to each other. That vaccine becomes more important if the dog is being boarded or spends much time around other dogs.

Heartworms, which are spread by mosquitoes, are another serious disease for dogs. Griffith says heartworm prevention and flea and tick treatments will make the animal much more comfortable and will also prevent it from bringing fleas, ticks and worms into the home.

And don’t forget, they’re called canines for a reason. A dog’s teeth can become damaged by use and neglect, so over the course of its lifetime, the dog has to have proper preventive care as well as diagnostic care because, as Griffith points out, “Dogs can’t tell you if they’ve got a loose tooth or a toothache.”

And finally, every new year that comes and goes means that Christmas puppy will be seven years older than it was the year before. So as the puppy becomes the unruly teenager and then the middle-aged lap dog, remember: Treat man’s best friend with care. Insist on a full-spectrum physical exam, and increase the vet visits to at least two a year as the animal ages.

“Think about it,” Griffith says. “When the dog goes from 8 years old to 9 years old, that’s seven people years. And I don’t know about you, but I certainly want to go to the doctor more than once every seven years when I hit 50.”

“The stairway is the first thing guests see as they enter your home. Having a

dramatic and artistic staircase can set the tone for the rest of your home.”

— David Brandsen, David Brandsen Construction, San Diego, California

Hollywood directors have long known that artistic stairways lend dramatic effects to a movie scene. Who doesn’t recall Sylvester Stallone jogging up the stone stairway of the Philadelphia Museum of Art in Rocky? Who could forget Rhett carrying Scarlett up the red-carpeted staircase in Gone with the Wind?

Classically modern, this four-sided, open-tread, maple-and−stainless-steel staircase wraps around the entire second floor. Builders: RV Construction and Red River Fabricating Inc.

Over the years, stairways have evolved into dramatic focal features within residential homes. “With design shows on HGTV, there’s more emphasis on the designer and homeowners’ self-expression, showcasing their home, having fun, reflecting their personality and their home’s personality,” explains Philip Stahl, AIA of Fargo, North Dakota-based Stahl Architects and Builders. “Today’s trends are toward more modern or mid-century modern, so the open floor plans of these call for a more showpiece stairway, an art installation in itself.”

“Quite often, the stairway is the centerpiece of today’s two-story homes, and almost always, they’re located within viewing distance from the front-entry door,” notes David Brandsen, of David Brandsen Construction in San Diego. “The stairway is the first thing guests see as they enter your home. Having a dramatic and artistic staircase can set the tone for the rest of your home.”

Certainly, stairways provide a functional passage from floor to floor, but often, homeowners seek form over function. “Many aspects of a home change over time, but the stairway is usually the permanent anchor that stays with the structure throughout its existence,” states Chris Gilleland of Red River Fabricating Inc. in West Fargo. “Stairways are an important part of a home’s flow, both functionally and aesthetically. They can act as a focal point or blend almost invisibly. Either way, they almost always make an impact.”

What key factors about stairways should a homeowner consider when working with a builder or an architect? “A custom stairway is the perfect opportunity for a homeowner to incorporate their personal style into a permanent part of the residence,” Gilleland says. “The only limits to a stairway are codes, budget and the homeowner’s imagination.”

Stairway designs and an almost endless array of materials and options available to homeowners offer innovative solutions in creating artistic masterpieces. “As a builder, I have found that most homeowners are looking for classic staircase designs that can be personalized to make it their own,” Brandsen adds. “It’s always a pleasure to find clients that are willing to allow their budget to craft a staircase that is really something extraordinary.”

With numerous riser and railing system products and materials on the market today, customization options are infinite. “Almost any wood species – including the exotics – plastic, steel and even glass are just a few,” Stahl notes. “Designers still use wood but in new and inventive ways that complement the house’s architectural features. Open risers offer alternative views of the home,

giving modern flair when used along with a cable or glass railing systems.”

Blueprints generally incorporate a basic dimension and area for a stairway. “Typically for new construction, the staircase is already ‘fit’ into the space on the plans by the architect,” explains Brandsen. “Options and design issues are discussed with the homeowner, depending on what the homeowner desires the final product to look like.”

Homeowners will continue to pursue their preferences in creating eye-catching climbs to the next floor. “Stairways have

always been an artistic part of a home,” concludes Gilleland. “With greater availability of materials and recent advancements in technology, building a custom-designed stairway that is personalized to a homeowner’s preference is totally achievable.”

Although the cost may vary greatly for replacing, remodeling or altering an existing stairway, a refresh is still possible. “Any staircase can be altered for a whole new look,” Stahl says. “Depending upon

a homeowner’s style, preference and budget, an updated railing may cost a few hundred dollars; however, a whole new stairway may cost thousands, depending upon the complexity and material selections.”

Whatever your style preference, today’s dramatic stairways present homeowners with stunning focal points of interest and artistically designed works of art.

Begin with a creative vision. Mix in generous portions of artistic expression. Combine superb craftsmanship. Blend ingredients with superior skill and factory production. This is the recipe for the enduring beauty and exquisite world of mosaic.

Linked to ancient traditions of mosaic art in Ravenna, Italy, SICIS The Art Mosaic Factory has become a worldwide icon of luxury mosaic creations. For nearly two decades, the Italian company has created visionary and artistic expressions of art through mosaic. The fundamental nature of this contemporary company can be summarized through their words, “Mosaic is the ink to write our story.”

“The art of mosaic boasts centuries of tradition,” states Leo Placuzzi, president of SICIS. “Every day, our creative endeavors reflect our awareness of this glorious past as a common legacy. For this reason, we strive to continue to develop innovations in mosaic technique. Art is definitely an expression of a creative challenge.”

Where does the inspiration behind each mosaic creation come? How

do design concepts begin? Drawing upon the latest trends, fashion and contemporary tastes, SICIS uniquely develops each mosaic idea within the company, with a focus on knowledge, quality and exclusiveness of products. “The vibrations that the thousand faces of the mosaic can add, in terms of light, material impact and three-dimensionality, become a sophisticated ‘dress.’ Like colorful, vibrant brushstrokes, the tesserae (a small square of stone, tile or glass) become a seal or statement,” Placuzzi notes.

With a specific design in mind, skilled mosaic master craftsmen begin the intricate process of working with each chip. Using precision hand placement and cutting, each chip follows curves and features, creating the soft and smooth outlines of the design. Stones, gold, platinum and even bronze and steel can be incorporated into mosaic creations. “In an exciting crescendo, the chip virtually becomes a brush stroke, a stroke of colorful reflection like a heart, leaf or flower which majestically opens to welcome you,” adds Placuzzi.

It is this attention to detail that distinguishes SICIS from anybody else in the world. Closely incorporating ancient techniques into contemporary times, SICIS combines a distinctive balance of tradition, technology and production. “Our peculiarity is our Artistic Mosaic Technique, in which every single chip is cut by hand and placed by the skillful mosaic masters in Ravenna,” Placuzzi elaborates. “We are among the few businesses in the world to possess a complete production line, from raw materials to the finished product. In other words, having a 100% made–in–Italy product gives us the strength point to control directly technology, knowledge, production, design, aesthetic, sensitivity, and creativity, therefore obtaining a wide versatility by our collections.”

This influential vision and dynamism encourages SICIS to explore new areas, markets and challenges. SICIS continues to beautify residential and non–residential venues throughout the world. Showroom destinations include:

New York, Milan, Paris, Rome, Moscow, Tokyo, India, Dublin and Hong Kong. Most recently, their newest showroom opened in Istanbul, representing a breathtaking journey through the most prestigious artistic achievements that masons of luxury mosaics can offer.

Grand or intricate, detailed or mesmerizing, mosaic art fits into any home. Whether contemporary and modern or luxurious and extravagant, SICIS utilizes mosaic as a versatile, expressive tool of communication. “The mosaic is the interpreter, helped by the infinite chromatic and decorative combinations,” Placuzzi concludes. “It can create something comparable to a fabric, covering surfaces for any type of

environment. More and more, our homes represent our tastes, passions and interests. Art — in any possible way one can conceive — brings a personal touch of self expression into our homes and it’s a creative expression of individuality.”

Exquisite, dramatic and artistic, the enduring characteristics of mosaic are truly a beauty for the eyes of the beholder. With intricate detail, mosaic captures the essence of light, fuses it with color and design, and weaves it into a flawless piece of art. The results are simply magnificent!

Q: Tim, We will be building a new home this year but have a concern about crawl spaces. Our previous home had some crawl space issues that led to mold growth and a musty smell. Our HVAC contractor said all of that musty, contaminated air was being sucked into our HVAC unit and distributed throughout our home. What can we do to avoid these conditions and have healthy indoor air in our next home?

A: The crawl space is not an area where many homeowners dare to venture. It is often dark, damp and cold—uninviting, to say the least. Unfortunately, this seldom-visited underbelly of the home can reduce the indoor air quality of the living areas above, causing moisture-related problems to the structure of the home and increasing utility costs.

Crawl spaces may appear to serve little purpose, but in truth, they have a few very important functions. Essentially, a crawl space is used in place of a basement to save cost. The crawl space elevates the home off the ground (as opposed to a slab), which is a necessity given wet soil conditions. Additionally, in our region, where building sites aren’t always flat, the crawl space smoothly joins the uneven terrain to the level home platform, making irregular terrain conditions seemingly disappear. The crawl space also houses the plumbing and ductwork of a home and grants access to repair or service those systems. They may not be transformable

into a game room or den, but clearly the crawl space adds significant benefit to the home.

Unfortunately, a poorly built crawl space can also be quietly undermining the integrity of the home and life within it. The crawl space—like many unfinished basements—tends to be quite humid. The excessive moisture in a crawl space poses a number of threats to the home. It provides an environment for mold to thrive—mold that can make its way up into the rest of the home. The moisture can also attract wood-boring insects that destroy the wood substructure. The

presence of insects may also draw rodents and other pests into the crawl space.

In addition, the crawl space can significantly increase energy costs. Many crawl spaces have built-in ventilation to allow airflow—a code-enforced design originally intended to mitigate the moisture maladies mentioned above. However, the latest studies on crawl space ventilation indicate that, in climates like ours, ventilation is actually contributing to moisture and humidity in the crawl space. Furthermore, ventilation allows winter cold to have free passage under the home, which can result in higher heating bills.

Fortunately, many advances have been made in the science of crawl space design and construction in recent years. When properly executed, these new designs produce safe, dry, healthy, durable crawl space conditions. In addition to creating these healthy conditions, the new closed and conditioned crawl spaces are more energy efficient than their outdated brethren.

The selection of a well-trained building professional is critical to the success of any building project. Fortunately, with the right professional builder at your side, you will be poised to take advantage of the many vastly improved construction practices available today, allowing you and your family to enjoy a safe, healthy, durable home for many years to come.

that Keeps GivingA Gift

While the holidays make us appreciate the cozy confines of indoor spaces, the winter months can take their toll.

Sometime last year during the long nights and cold winter weather, two Bowling Green homeowners decided to stop wishing for warmer adventures, and begin to plan for them instead. With help from builder Tim Graham of Design Builders, Inc., each family reimaged their backyard spaces to enhance the home’s livability.

Bill and Jennie Edwards wanted a pool and a cabana, while Lisa Richards and her husband David decided on a covered porch with a unique design that forms a private perch above and a storage area below.

Despite the similarities and despite having used the same builder, each project is distinctive.

The brick walkway was transformed into a covered patio, a screened porch, and below it, a very functional storage area enclosed by sunbrella® fabric panels.

Page 26: A Gift that Keeps Giving - TownNewsbloximages.chicago2.vip.townnews.com/bgdailynews.com/... · 2015-01-13 · This simple Q&A required a series of phone calls and repeated emails

Intended as a quiet place to read or to watch a spring rain move across the backyard, the Richards added a screened porch with Sunbrella® fabric privacy panels, a one-of-a-kind rope swing with custom cushions, and a freestanding, quick-start wood stove that is just the right size for the space.

Across town, the Edwards family

transformed their backyard by adding a pool for those hot summer days, and a rustic, relaxed, open air den for entertaining guests well into football season.

Word of mouth, and a few degrees of separation, led both families to Graham, who has been building and renovating homes in Bowling Green for 25 years.

Graham suggests that homeowners who

are interested in redesigning their outdoor spaces begin the process about three to six months ahead of time especially if a pool is part of the plan.

He encourages clients to contact him early in the design process because he brings years of experience to the table. “As a general rule, the build time is about three months. The design phase can take anywhere from a

low-maintenance features include the Trex decking on the floor, AZeK trim, and a freestanding electric fireplace to keep the porch cozy in cold weather. The existing brick wall serves as a natural radiant.

For the edwards’ project, an existing screen porch at the back of the home was enhanced by an open-air remodel that put the fun in functional.

few weeks to a few months depending on complexity,” he says.Graham got high marks from both homeowners for his ability to help guide the process

from start to finish. For example, when Lisa Richards first discussed a potential addition, she actually wasn’t

thinking of a porch. She really just wanted someplace to store her pool furniture. But after she and her husband ruled out a pool house as too large a footprint, Graham suggested this unique design with a porch area above, “hiding” the storage space beneath. Fabric panel “walls,” courtesy of Creative Interiors, gives the project a certain whimsy, but the construction is solid—stone, brick, cement board and cedar. All the pool furniture is tucked below—out of sight through the winter months. On the porch, a cast-iron stove throws plenty of warmth, while the Sunbrella® walls can change the ambiance from open and breezy to safe and sound.

The original home was built in the 1970’s, so Graham had to match elements that would compliment the architectural detail and try to create a space that seemed like it was part of the original design.

For her remodel project, Jennie Edwards faced a similar challenge. And although her home is not yet 20 years old, she was surprised to learn that the brick used on the façade was no longer available. That discovery prompted an all-points bulletin for the closest match.

She credits Graham as well as his field crew with making the addition a successful project and says everybody involved offered valuable insights.

Originally she had considered extending the breakfast nook and building their den off the kitchen. Instead, they took the entire project outdoors. By locating the sitting area off to one side, Jennie was able to keep her original screen porch, which now serves as a transitional space to the backyard.

In addition to keeping her screened porch and adding a pool, Jennie knew she wanted two specific things from the construction project—a wood burning fireplace and a bathroom that guests could easily access.

The new bathroom is just off the new porch. It shares a wall at the back of the house, which lends depth and architectural interest even in the small space

But the wood-burning fireplace, as it turned out, wasn’t such a good idea. Instead, Graham

stamped, stained concrete defines the footprint of the new porch. Above, white wood on the ceiling and a matching ceiling fan helps streamline the color palette.

Initially, the homeowners wanted a real wood-burning fireplace but this easy maintenance gas insert was the builder’s suggestion. He pointed out that the uneven draw from an outdoor exposure can cause chimneys to throw ash and cause excessive smoke.

A small garage is just the right size to store pool furniture. It also serves to frame the room as well as to contain plumbing, and electrical units.

suggested gas logs because his experience told him that shifting winds and outdoor conditions can cause sparks, smoke, and ash when they are least expected.

So now, rather than storing wood and dodging sparks, they can flip a switch and get the same warm ambiance of an outdoor fireplace without the hassle.

Despite being nicknamed “the Project Manager” by her husband for her ability to navigate the chaos of a remodel, Jennie says she really was grateful for Graham’s patience and his wealth of knowledge. Her advice to others is simple: Before you build your dream house, first go through a renovation or an addition. There are so many decisions to be made and it helps if you’ve already done it at least once.

Holiday Gifts

Handmade gifts are always a pleasure to receive. We look forward to receiving a friend’s holiday cookie tin at work every December and love receiving anything that a friend put time and energy into creating. Some of our favorite food gifts are handmade pickles or relishes that we make with seasonal vegetables and fruit (no canning in our kitchen, just refrigerator ready) or lovely artisanal items such as olive oil or pure maple syrup.

Thanks to the collaborative efforts of Producer David Brinkley, Artistic Director Darius Barati and Audio Producer James Pearson, an acoustic performance by the Nashville band Carmonas will soon become Part Four in the newly christened PBS television series The Lost River Sessions.

The Lost River Sessions are WKU’s contribution to musical theater in the round. In the spirit of Austin City Limits, audiences are treated to a show within a show as they enjoy listening to live music recorded and filmed for television. They

Local Music is the Next Big Thingare instructed to silence their cellphones but are encouraged to clap and keep time. Being an audience member is like having a backstage pass to a recording session.

And just to add another local layer, the producers seek out one-of-a-kind SOKY venues. It’s microbrew meets Grand Ole Opry, bluesy love songs in an authentic log cabin. In this case, The Carmonas have temporarily commandeered the 916 Gallery on State Street and are performing their original songs for an audience of around 40 people.

All the television cameras, sound mics and storyboards are manned by WKU broadcasting interns, who get class credit and hands-on experience. The small-stage atmosphere gives students and musicians alike the opportunity to share new music, get real-time feedback and hone their performance skills.

While most producers aspire to bigger and bigger arenas for their talent, Brinkley says the goal of The Lost River Sessions is to “expand the show’s reach without adding more seats.” As the director of public broadcasting, Brinkley

is charged with finding distribution in what he terms “overlap” markets.

Overlap markets are larger cities with demographics to support both public and private television stations. Television distribution of the show in markets such as Miami, Atlanta, Denver and Tulsa will help promote, finance and continue the sessions.

Brinkley says his job is to connect with what is important on a local level. “And right now, this music scene is important on a local level,” he says. “We want to promote that.”

reflections

“She thinks I’m cuuuuuuuuuuuute!”“Happy birthday!”When you read these this time of year,

don’t you know immediately what stories they are from? Don’t they take you right back to childhood and waiting in anticipation for the nights that Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (see "Rudolph turns the Big 5-0" on page 12)

and Frosty the Snowman were going to be on?For those of you from the “rent it, own it, TV-

on-demand” generation, you don’t know that we used to only be able to see a program when it actually aired on television. If you missed Rudolph, you had to wait another whole year before you could see it again.

Somehow, many of my holiday memories

evolving traditions

are tied up with these programs and the excitement of waiting for them to air on TV. It didn’t feel like Christmas was coming until I had seen these shows.

I think the content had very little to do with why they were so exciting. I think it’s because we gathered as a family to watch them together. Watching TV together was not something we did much of, so these nights always felt extra special.

We all settled into the small TV room, my dad in his chair on my right and my mom in hers on my left. My younger brother, and eventually another one, and I sat on the floor, waiting in great anticipation for Sam the Snowman to come gliding toward us and begin the story.

We laughed at Hocus Pocus, the precocious rabbit in Frosty. We got scared by the Abominable Snowman and cheered when it turned out he was a “Mighty Humble Bumble,” according to Yukon Cornelius.

What mattered on those nights was being together, anticipating the season to come and dreaming about the toys that were inevitably advertised during the breaks. Snuggling into our warm little house to watch something as a family was just one of the ways that we got ready for Christmas, but it was clearly an important one, because I still fondly recall those annual nights all these years later.

Last year, I was working on something in the kitchen and turned on the TV. Imagine my delight when it turned out to be the night for Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

I turned it up and called my husband and son in to see what was on, thinking they might sit down and enjoy it with me. They acknowledged it and moved back to whatever they had been doing.

I wondered that we had not been anticipating this night, but then I realized that because we had always had a VCR or DVD player, my son and I had never set aside the night that any of these shows were on TV when he was little. If he wanted to watch Frosty, we just slipped the tape or disk in and watched it.

I had a little moment of sadness at this lost tradition, but then Clarice came to tell Rudolph she thought he was cute, and my heart soared with him. I enjoyed the program by myself and fondly remembered those nights from my own childhood.
