Calvin and Calvinism Calvin was French, but kicked out of Catholic

France for being Protestant. Moved to Switzerland and published the

Institutes of the Christian Religion Agreed with Luther that people could be saved

by faith alone. Also believed in predestination – God

predestined some people to be saved (the elect) and others to be damned (the reprobate)

No one was sure of their salvation, so all Calvinists tried to do God’s work

Calvin set up a theocracy in Geneva – became a “fortress” of Protestantism.

Had a consistory; a court to enforce moral discipline. Citizens were punished for “crimes”: dancing,

singing obscene songs, playing cards, swearing and getting drunk.

II. Reformation in EnglandPolitical, not spiritual. Henry VIII wanted a divorce,

and the pope refused to “annul” (cancel) his marriage. To avoid excommunication, Henry started a new church!

Break from Rome Act of Supremacy, 1534, said that the King was

the only head of the new Anglican Church of England.

King used power to dissolve monasteries and sell the land to merchants and landowners.

In all other ways, though the Anglican Church was the same as the Catholic Church.
