Permits the holder to undertake commercial fishing activities. Angle Using a line, with or without a rod, for the purpose of taking fish. Angler A person who angles. Aquatic Pertaining to water or living or growing in water. Includes marine and fresh water. Biodiversity The natural diversity of all life, the sum of all our native species of flora and fauna, the genetic variation within these, their habitats, and the ecosystems of which they are an integral part. Catch (verb) Take possession of fish with the intention of either retaining these for personal or commercial benefit or releasing them unharmed. c) crustaceans (for example, crabs and barnacles); d) echinoderms (such as star fishes and sea urchins); and f) any other species of aquatic invertebrates declared to be fish (to date, marine polychaete worms and jellyfish).

Fisher A person who takes fish. Fly fishing Angling for fish using specially developed flies designed to

simulate live insects and other fauna. Habitat The environment in which a community or species of plants

or animals lives, grows and reproduces, including the physical and biological components of the location.

MAC Management Advisory Committee. A precursor of the fisheries committees established to address and advise on matters relating to particular fisheries.

MAFRI Marine and Freshwater Research Institute. Peak body In the context of the Fisheries Act 1995, a ‘recognised peak

body’. PFIGA Professional Fishing Instructors and Guides Association. QFMA Queensland Fisheries Management Authority. Release The release of fish back into the immediate area of water from

which they were caught. Recognised peak body

An organisation declared to be a recognised peak body under s. 95 of the Fisheries Act 1995.

Recreational Fishery Licence (RFL)

A licence issued under s. 45 of the Fisheries Act 1995. Permits the holder to undertake recreational fishing activities.

Salmonid A fish belonging to the family Salmonidae. Examples are rainbow and brown trout.

SIV Seafood Industry Victoria. Stakeholder A person or body with a direct interest in the issue at hand. Sustainability (ecological)

Concerned with the ongoing protection of biological diversity and maintenance of the ecological processes on which life depends.

TABV Tourism Accreditation Board of Victoria. TAC Total Allowable Catch. Take As defined in the Fisheries Act 1995, means gain possession or

control by any means. Victorian Coastal Council

A statutory body established under the Coastal Management Act 1995 to undertake State-wide strategic coastal planning.

Victorian waters Waters within the limits of the State of Victoria and the coastal water of Victoria to the 3 nautical mile limit.
