• Have you ever eaten plantains, an empanada, a tamale, orsalsa? If so, then you have tasted some of the food of Hispanic or Latino people.

• Beyond delicious food, Hispanic and Latino people havemade many contributions to United States culture and history.

• National Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate thehistory, culture, and contributions of people who have ancestors that come from Mexico, Central America, South America, Spain, and the Caribbean.

• We celebrate from September 15th to October 15th.

• During the month there are many events such as festivalsthat honor Hispanic culture.

• Explore your library to find Hispanic-themedbooks. You could find books on the culture or history of countries or a story written by a Hispanic or Latino author.

• Try your hand at some artwork. You couldmake migajon miniatures from Ecuador or Ponce carnival masks from Puerto Rico.

Fact SheetNational Hispanic Heritage Month

• National Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the history, culture, and contributions of people who have ancestors that come from Mexico, Central America, South America, Spain, and the Caribbean.

• President Johnson founded the celebration in 1968. Each year, the celebration lasted for a week. In 1988, President Regan expanded it to cover September 15th to October 15th. September 15th was selected as the start of the celebration because it is Independence Day for several Latin American countries including El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Costa Rica.

• During the month there are many events such as festivals that honor Hispanic culture.

• Explore your library to find Hispanic-themed books. You could find books on the culture or history of countries or a story written by a Hispanic or Latino author.

• Try your hand at some artwork. You could make migajon miniatures from Ecuador or Ponce carnival masks from Puerto Rico.

• You can play some Hispanic or Latino games such as toma todo from Mexico.
