A FLYING TRADE FOR THE OPENING SALE OF
STORE LAMBS AVERAGING £71.60
Auctioneer’s Report: (Greg MacDougall): The Store Lamb season of 2020 got off to a flying
start with a tremendous entry of 3063. With the current Prime Lamb price at a record high for
the time of year and an abundance of grass buyers present from all parts of the UK all keen to
ensure numbers, plenty would leave empty handed or short of requirements. Lambs on the
whole in nice order although smaller than some years with the show mostly made up of genuine
stores with strong sorts in short supply. The day’s sale topped at £92 for a tremendous pen of
Beltex from DR & JE Ellison with the consignment averaging just over £83. WS Hudson & Son of
Izaak Walton once again produced a great run of mostly Suffolk x Mules topping at £82 with
others to £81 and RL & LE Kendal, Outgang equalling this price late in the sale. Travelling from
Oxfordshire, RH Mole showed over 400 lambs mostly out of hoggs topping at £83.50 to average
£74.85. Best bred and strong lambs in general £80-£90 with medium term sorts £75-£78. Long
keep lambs looking particularly well sold with plenty in the high £60s. A decent entry of Mule
wethers on offer with plenty of pens either side of £70 topping at £72.50 from Alex Denby, Moor
Platt and JW Hall, Darnbrook. Small sorts around £60. A nice pen of Cheviots from J Tomlinson,
The Marsh sold to £72 and Herdwick x lambs from ST & JE Foster to £69. One pen of Swales from
new vendor BH & MJ Gray sold to £41. Next sale Tuesday 28th July with early entries invited and
another hot trade expected. Overall average £71.60 (+£8.31 on the year for 894 more sold).
