The Phantom Of The Pop Era

T he following is a Teacher’s Pack and accompanying audio tracks for the show The Phantom of the Pop Era. The exercises are designed to help prepare your students for the show.

We strongly recommend that students be prepared before attending the show, as it will increase their motivation, understanding and enjoyment. The show has been designed for a mixed audien-ce (from aged 7 to adult), therefore we have included a wide variety of material in this pack, from colouring pages and games to worksheets, scenes from the play, songs, story work and ideas for further work related to Leroux’s writing. Please select the material from this Teacher’s Pack that you feel is most suited to your students’ age and ability.

Face 2 Face’s production of The Phantom of the Pop Era is based on Gaston Leroux’s famous story The Phantom of the Opera, adapted for the stage in a comic and original interpretation es-pecially designed for non-native speakers of English. You may wish to compliment this Teacher’s Pack with a copy of Leroux’s original novel: our favourite edition is by Oxford World Classics, used and recommended by English literature teachers and with an excellent translation by the scholar and writer David Coward.

We would appreciate any feedback from students and teachers on the show and the Teacher’s Packs. Only in this way can we continue to improve and offer better productions year after year. We would also be very pleased to receive any drawings or letters from students about the shows, and will be posting the best ones on our web site.

If you have any doubts or questions, please feel free to call our central office or contact us by email:

The Phantom Of The Pop Era

Synopsis

The story takes place on the set of a 1970s television show. Different contestants sing in front of a panel of judges. But there is a rumour that

a ghost haunts the television studio….

One day, a spotlight falls and nearly hits one of the singers, Carlotta. She is scared and refuses to continue her performance. The show’s

presenter, Raoul, does not know what to do… they need to find a sin-ger quickly! He asks Christine, the stage manager, to sing. She has a

beautiful voice and the show is a success. But after the show, Christine is kidnapped by a mysterious figure with an angelic voice… and the

contestants finally come face to face with the Phantom of the Pop Era.

Reading Race This is an interesting way to familiarize your students with the story.

Photocopy the synopsis above and pin in to the wall of your classroom. Divide students into teams of 3. Explain that one student is the runner and the other two are the secretaries. The runner must go to the board and read the text. S/he then returns to the secretaries and dic-tates as much of the text as s/he can remember: this may a sentence, a few words or even individual words if the students find them difficult. The secretaries write it down. One of the secretaries then becomes the next runner and returns to the board, so that all three team members take turns to be the runner. The game continues until the teams have written down the whole of the text (all three team members must have a completed copy). The first team to finish put their hands up are declared the winners and the game stops. The winning team then begin to read their completed synopsis aloud, one sentence at a time. The other teams check it with their versions and you check it with the original, correcting any mistakes. During the correcting session ask for contributions from the other teams, too.

Alternatively, you can do this exercise as a simple transcription, reading the synopsis and as-king your students to write it down, phrase by phrase.

Ask your students to copy the list of words onto a clean sheet of paper. Working in pairs, they should try to figure out the meaning of the words, writing their translation in Spanish next to each word. Then, using a bilingual dictionary, they can check their answers and look for any words they couldn’t guess.

To finish, they can test each other by covering the word list and taking it in turns to ask each other how to say the words in English, for example:

Hugo: How do you say ‘máscara’ in English?

Naia: Mask. My turn! How do you say ‘programa’ in English?

Hugo: Programme. My turn! How do you say… etc.

Continue until both students have guessed all of the words!

The Phantom Of The Pop Era

Meet The CharactersListen to the characters as they introduce themselves and write a number next to each name to show which order you heard them in. Now listen again and match each name from the co-lumn on the left to a character description from the column on the right.

As well as these protagonists, other characters in the story include the different contestants who appear on the programme, the audience, the cameramen, the directors and technical staff, hair and makeup artists, wardrobe… all the people who are needed to put on a great television show!

The presenter of the programme.

A judge on the programme

A contestant on the programme. She is a good

singer but she is also very vain.

The stage manager. She is a very good singer.

She falls in love with the Phantom.

A ghost who haunts the theatre.

The Phantom Of The Pop Era

Script and Solution:Here is a transcription of the recording, in the correct order:

Hey, guys. I’m Raoul, pleased to meet you. I’m the presenter of this television show. You wanna be famous? I’m your man!

Hi, I’m Carlotta. I’m a really fabulous singer, darling. The audience just love me, and I’m sure I’m going to win the competition. Now, if you don’t mind, I’m very busy warming up… (she sings)

I am Madame Giry. That’s Giry, with a soft G, not Guiri like some imbeciles like to call me. I’m a jud-ge on the programme. I’ve been in the business for thirty years and I know everything there is to know about the voice. And in this competition, my deci-sion is final!

Hello. My name’s Christine, I’m the stage manager on the show. I really want to be ON the show and I love singing, but no-one ever takes any notice of me. I wish I had the confidence. My friend Eric has been helping me. He is the most amazing musician…

I have many names, but no face. People call me the angel of music, Eric, the Phantom of the Pop Era…
