IntroductionThe mechanical ventilation systems

shown in this catalogue resolve the prob-

lems connected to smoke extraction at

high temperature and are the ideal solu-

tion for emergency extraction in case of

fire.

Potential Risks in Fire Situation• release of gas and toxic substances

causing eyes to water and conse-

quent difficulty in escaping

• ashes can be suspended in the atmos-

phere leading to reduced or no visi-

bility

• development of very high tempera-

tures

• the increase of carbon monoxide and

reduction of oxygen in the air (possi-

bly leading to asphyxiation)

Function and Advantages of

Mechanical Ventilation in

Case of Fire

1. Mechanical ventilation removes

smoke and fumes produced by a fire

and by creating negative pressure (in

the ambient) it prevents smoke

spreading into other part of the

building. This makes it easier for

people to escape and simplifies the

job of the fire and rescue services.

2. In enclosed areas, temperatures can

easily exceed 1000° C, causing com-

bustion from heat radiation and mak

ing any external extinguishing opera

tion useless. Keeping the tempera

ture relatively low (300°- 400° C) by

extracting hot air, can avoid the col-

lapse of support structures. In addi-

tion, the higher oxygen levels will

cause better combustion and thus,

for most materials, a lower produc-

tion of toxic smoke.

3. Mechanical ventilation allows the sit-

ing of the exhaust outlets away from

the fire. High temperature axial fans

are easily connected to a duct sys-

tem.

4. Mechanical ventilation allows the ex-

traction of cold fumes, which since

they remain at a lower level are dan-

gerous and are difficult to remove

using static systems.

5. Mechanical ventilation allows for ven-

tilation in normal circumstances

(clean air), using products with two

speed motors: at low speed for nor-

mal ventilation (so with lower noise

level) and at high speed for emer-

gency conditions. For this type of op-

eration, it is necessary to install the

fan with a dedicated power line that

automatically operates in case of fire.

CertificationEmergency Smoke Extract fan design and

installation is regulated by the European

standard EN12101-3, which establishes

the temperature ranges/operation time

certified products must comply with.

The SMOKEX® range is CE certified

to classes F300 and F400 and guaranteed

to operate at 300°C for two hours in

compliance with EN12101-3 standard by

the Applus laboratories in Barcelona.

DescriptionAxial impulse fans suitable for installation

in underground car parks and/or tunnels.

They have been designed and certified

for the handling of smoke and hot gases

caused by fire. These fans are dual pur-

pose, i.e. they provide both normal ven-

tilation (carbon monoxide removal) and

smoke control in case of fire.

In the standard configuration for

normal ventilation (CO extract),

the range can be used up to a tem-

perature of +60°C. The fire/smoke

extraction models (HT) are CE

certified to class F300 or F400, and

guaranteed to operate at 300°C for

two hours in compliance with Stan-

dard EN12101-3 by the Applus lab-

oratories in Barcelona.

The special impulse induction fan tech-

nology represents the most innovative

and cost-effective alternative to tradi-

tional ducted mechanical extraction sys-

tems. There is a drastic reduction in

the cost of installation (no need for

ducted and grilled systems) and consid-

erable running cost savings (the

same fan controls polluted air and

smoke and hot gases). Additionally, it

is possible for sections of the system to

operate only when the need arises (with

other sections of the system not oper-

ating).

Basic PrincipleThe ventilation of enclosed or under-

ground car parks demands certain key

fundamentals:

• the removal of pollutants emitted by

vehicles

• the control and removal of hot fumes

and gases in the event of a fire

• the effective protection of escape

routes (which also provides easier ac-

cess for Emergency Services)

Special TechnologyIn recent years, the jet or induction fan

technology has become the new stan-

dard for normal ventilation and for

smoke extraction in case of fire in en-

closed car parks.

This technology represents the most in-

novative and cost-effective alternative to

traditional ducted mechanical extraction

systems. The careful management of the

project in all its development stages (re-

quireing the use of fluid dynamics calcu-

lation programs) ensures that the system

will operate efficiently and correctly.

Car park ventilation systems provide ei-

ther normal ventilation to remove fumes

and other pollutants, or can extract

smoke at very high temperatures should

there be a fire in an underground car

park. Or they can be combination of

both, i.e. dual purpose fans.

Integrated SystemsA fully integrated car park ventilation

system requires five key elements:

• suitably positioned carbon monoxide

(CO) and heat/smoke sensors

• a system control panel

• CFD (computation fluid dynamics)

analysis

• accurate selection and positioning of

smoke control fans

• contaminated air removal system.

The system is based on placing a set of

axial impulse fans or centrifugal induction

fans throughout the parking area, which

operate in a similar way to a ducted

system. When installed on the ceiling,

they transfer the smoke-laden air from

the upper to the lower layers, creating a

continuous air flow, inducing cleaner,

cooler air which drives the smoke to the

extraction and removal points. The sys-

tem is completed by natural or mechan-

ical air inlets and exhaust fans.

Normal VentilationThe axial impulse or centrifugal induction

fans efficiently ventilate both bottom and

top layers avoiding the creation of areas

where air could get trapped. The fans

are only operated when the CO

(carbon monoxide) detectors show a

level of pollution higher than the

pre-set level (variable according to re-

quirements).

AdvantagesA smoke and fume extract system

based on impulse axial or centrifugal in-

duction fans can easily be split into dif-

ferent control areas. This ensures

maximum extraction of smoke from

the area where fire has broken out and

increased the air pressure where the

fire needs to be extinguished. Pressure

is lowered at the site of the fire, stop-

ping fumes spreading, and reducing the

temperature of the fire affected area.

Compared to a ducted ventilation sys-

tem, this innovative system ensures

multiple benefits in terms of the low

cost and efficiency associated with its

design, installation, operation and usage.

Design • The compact size of the fans and the

flexibility of installation allows the op-

timisation of space.

• Design time is saved since there is no

need for a complex ducted system.

• The system effectiveness can be pre

dicted with CFD (fluid dynamics cal

culation) modelling.

• It allows the project designer to ben-

efit from a better pre-sales customer

service.

• The project can be financially as-

sessed within 24 hours to make sure

that the final costs are in line with ex

pected costs.

Installation• The fans are easy to install, ensuring

time saving in terms of hours of

work.

• There is no need for an expensive

and complex duct and grille systems.

• The smaller sizes of the fans adds to

the ease of installation of other serv-

ices (sprinklers, lighting etc);

• The fans and systems are easy to

maintain and service.

Operation Major savings in running costs are

ensured by the system's distinctive

features:

• The ventilation system can be fully or

partly operational. Carbon monox-

ide (CO) detectors and the smoke

sensors, ensure that only those fans

operate which are located in areas

where pollution levels are exceeded

or where a fire has started.

• Less total power required as the ac

curate design ensures the optimal

size of the ventilation system. The

inlet and exhaust fans can be smaller

as the jet or induction fans generate

a negligible pressure drop compared

to ducted systems.

Use

• Better quality of breathable air:

this system creates a continuous air

flow mixing different layers of air and

avoiding areas of trapped air.

• Optimised safety in the event of

a fire: fast and effective toxic fume

extraction, leading to safer escape

routes, easier access for emergency

services, promoting people safety and

minimising the effects of fire on the

building structure.

From Design to Customer

Service Designing a car park ventilation system

requires the application of CFD. The high

complexity and reliability of fluid dynam

ics calculations are well established. Dur-

ing this crucial design stage, we can offer

a full CFD analysis and valuable engineer-

ing support.

How it WorksCFD calculation is essential to ensure

that all areas of the car park are correctly

ventilated and, in the event of fire, fume

extraction is optimised.

CFD analysis is also necessary to calcu-

late accurately the size of the ventilation

system required together with the cor-

rect positioning of the jet or induction

fans and of the other exhaust and/or

inlet fans.

This calculation is based on computer

simulation and combines variables such

as the required number of air

changes/hour (as required by regulation),

air volume and direction, and the struc-

tural features of each car park (in a 3D

model).

The data generates dynamic scenarios

based on air speed profiles, particle

movement and airflow distribution. This

allows a customised ventilation scheme

to be designed. This methodical ap-

proach allows not only prediction of the

system effectiveness, but also ensures the

most cost-effective solution.

Calculation Set-up and

Scenario DevelopmentAccount must be taken of boundary conditions and initial

conditions such as external pressure and outside air temper-

ature. Structural parameters (light wells, access ramps etc)

also need to be specified, together with operating conditions

(material definition, assignment of air performance required).

Mesh definition is also necessary (ie the quantity of primary

volumes the model must be split into). Data processing and

assessment of each scenario can be made by changing the

type, quantity and position of the fans.

Analysing Results and

Developing a Balanced SolutionData can be analysed by checking the air speed inside each sec-

tion of the car park.

The graph shown below represents the average air speed on a

sectional floor.
