During the parent information session, they will talk generally about the needs of more able students and in addition will provide first-hand information about their CTY summer and online programmes, including the benefits to the students and how to qualify.

If you feel your child may have unrecognised talents or if you are just interested in this subject please come along. We will also introduce you to key members of the school team and tell you how to contact them.

See the attached poster for more details on the parents’ presentation. Also attached is a copy of the Johns Hopkins Centre for Talented Youth International Booklet.

School Extension WorkThe work on the school site continues apace, as noted in last week’s comments on the expected completion dates for the swimming pool. Since last week the roof of the dining room has now been converted into additional play space and we will be adding climbing equipment to this area. Work is continuing apace to install other playground equipment and I will continue to update you as these projects are completed.

College Calendar

As noted last week, the online College Calendar is the central reference point for all our school events and can be found on the College website. As we always strive to be environmentally friendly, we will not automatically send paper copies to parents. However, if you would like to take a copy of the Term 1 calendar, they are available at the Reception Desk from next Monday. If so, please remember to regularly check the online master calendar, as changes to our programme will happen throughout the year, and although we will inform you of such changes, any paper copies could soon become outdated.

Finally, I am looking forward to joining our first school football match of the season on Saturday morning, so may see some of you at this away game.

Yours sincerely,

Mr Daryl OrchardHeadmaster

Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving) Theme Day in 2013Chuseok is known as Korean Thanksgiving Day and it is one of the most important holidays in Korea, celebrated on the 15th of the 8th month of the lunar calendar. On that day, many people visit their hometowns and hold ancestral rites in gratitude for finishing the year’s farming, as well as sharing their harvest with their neighbours and playing folk games.

As a way of celebrating Chuseok, during Korean Studies we will learn about the meaning behind Chuseok and how people celebrate this festival. On Friday 27th September, after the Chuseok holiday, we will have our Chuseok Theme Day. During the day, all children will have an opportunity to experience traditional Korean games. For a special Korean food making activity, we are looking for parents in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 who would like to come in to prepare for and run a Korean cooking class.

If you wish to come in and help with Gimbap (Korean rolls) making, please kindly contact your child’s year group leader via e-mail address (below) or myself [email protected]

In our assembly, Key Stage 3 students will perform Korean traditional drumming and Key Stage 2 students will be presenting traditional Korean dances.

On this day, we encourage children to come dressed in traditional Korean costume, the Hanbok. Alternatively, students can come dressed in the colours of the Korean flag, a Korean football shirt or in normal school uniform.

If anyone would like to purchase a hanbok, Emart, Dongdaemoon market and Namdaemoon market are the places to shop. For those who would like to share a spare hanbok, it would be great to donate your costume for a day and take them back after school. If you have extra hanbok to share please bring it in to the Reception Desk.

If you have a hanbok that your child has grown out of, and would like to donate it to school, we will put it to good use.If you would like any further information please do not hesitate to email me [email protected]

A DULWICH SENIOR WEEKLY NEWSLETTER - 6th SEPTEMBER 2013

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The first full week of Senior School has been a very hectic one, with all the students and teachers getting used to their timetables and school routines. It has been a delight to visit many lessons this week and see the students so enthusiastically engaged in their learning. From a personal perspective, I have very much enjoyed teaching the IGCSE Geography course to my new students in Year 10 and I am looking forward to seeing them develop as outstanding Geographers as the year progresses.

Also this week, we were visited at the College by Mr Ian Chambers, the Director of the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) in the Asia Pacific region. Mr Chambers met Mr Orchard and me to discuss the College’s application to become a Candidate School to run the IB Diploma programme of study in Year 12 and Year 13, starting in August 2015. During a tour of the College campus and new Senior School facilities, Mr Chambers commented on our excellent resources and facilities in all areas of the College.

As a result of this visit, I can confirm that the College will proceed with the application for Candidate School status to become an approved IB school. Following approval by the IBO of our Candidate School status, a two year consultation process will follow, whereby the College will continue to strategically plan for the implementation of the IBDP programme of study in August 2015. This will include analysing our recruitment, staffing, training and facility needs in order to successfully run the programme. The College will apply for final centre approval to become a full member school in June 2015. I will update parents periodically regarding this application for IBO centre status over the course of this academic year.

I look forward to meeting many of our senior School parents at the Senior School information evening on Thursday 12th September at 6.30pm, held on the 5th Floor.

Warmest Regards,

Dr Daniel Moore

Senior School Academic Extra-Curricular Activities

History of Medicine and Science Club

Throughout this academic year the Senior School will significantly expand the range of academic ECAs that will be on offer to our students in Year 7-Year 10. One such ECA, ‘The History of Medicine and Science’, will be launched this term. As part of the activities in school, students will be invited to participate in external academic competitions.

The Gulen Institute Youth Platform, based at the University of Houston, USA, has announced its fifth international essay competition, which is open to our Year 10 students at DCSL. Students are invited to address global challenges and propose potential solutions based on their own research and experience. Contest winners will also be invited to participate in a platform held in Washington DC, at which they will have the opportunity to share their ideas and listen to their peers from around the world. The programme hopes to provide a chance for youth from around the world to engage each other in discussion and to advance cross-cultural understanding.

The topic of this year’s essay is:

What role should state and non-profit agencies play in the education of disadvantaged youth who are not realising their potential? http://www.gulenyouthplatform.org/

Interested students are welcome to enter the competition by attending the ‘The History of Medicine and Science’ Academic ECA club, which will be held during lunch-break on Fridays.

Supporting IGCSE Chemistry

The Royal Society of Chemistry, UK, has a variety of programmes aimed at supporting students in their discovery of the chemical sciences, including international competitions such as the Bill Bryson Science Communication competition. RSC ChemNet, its network for 14-18 year old chemistry students, provides students with career advice, help with their studies and the chance to attend events from industrial laboratory visits to university visits. All Senior School students studying IGCSE sciences are encouraged to join ChemNet by registering at http://my.rsc.org/chemnet Being part of an international scientific network for school students, that operates beyond the boundaries of a classroom, will help guide our students as they progress with their studies

Ms Julie Connolly PhDAssistant Head of Senior School (Academic)

Senior School Student Council applicationsAll students in the Senior School are eligible for applying for positions on the Student Council. However, there is a limit of one boy and one girl for each class group, so an election process is necessary. This means all students who wish to be considered for the Senior School Student Council need to give a small presentation (brief given below) in classrooms during assembly time on Tuesday 10th September.

Brief for the presentation.• Thepresentationmustnotexceedthreeminutes.• The presentation can be supported with the following: a poster and/or three PowerPoint slides (the PP slide must be added to the folder in the pupil drive on Monday 9th September). • Thepresentationmuststate‘WhyyouwillmakeagreatStudentCouncilrepresentative’.

At the end of the presentations, each class vote for one boy and one girl. The voting papers will be collected for counting and the candidates will be informed of the outcome by Friday September 13th.

Not everyone who applies will be elected, but students who put themselves forward demonstrate they are prepared to ‘take the risk’ and are willing to work to benefit the school; all of which is highly commendable. The results and more information about the Senior School Student Council will appear in future Newsletters.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Just a week in and already the campus is a hub of activity. Routines have been re-established and the children are quickly adapting after the long Summer break. Football trials, involving over 100 children, took place after school and after the Chuseok break the full ECA programme will be underway.

Today’s assembly focussed on a very special young man. We all need heroes in our lives and few stories are more inspiring than that of Canadian Terry Fox, whose run across Canada while battling cancer has motivated people to make a difference for 33 years, raising more than half a billion dollars for cancer research. Thank you to Mr Deegan who shared the Terry Fox story with the children at assembly today.

While my commitments mean opportunities to work with the children are often limited, this week I was very fortunate to be invited into Year 1 to be part of their ‘Superhero’ unit. I thoroughly enjoyed being with the enthusiastic, budding superheroes and hearing about their own special powers. Look for the Year 1 article later in the Newsletter to see my transformation from mild mannered Head of Primary, to the Flash!

We encourage the development of student leadership throughout the Primary School. There are many positions that any child, dependent on age, can aspire to. These opportunities help the children to experience the responsibilities that come with being a member of a community, which helps them prepare to play an active role as citizens as they grow up. This week, many of the Key Stage 2 children have been presenting to classmates the reasons why they would be suitable candidates for the School Council. The Council provides students with the chance to voice their opinions about school matters and present the opinions of their classmates to the group. Well done to all the young leaders who put themselves forward.

Next week, children interested in becoming House Captains or House Vice-Captains will be asked to make a presentation to all the children in their Houses, explaining why they would like the role and briefly outlining some of the qualities they have that would make it appropriate for them to be appointed. The positions are prestigious and those chosen must lead by example at all times in their behaviour, and the respect they show to others - following the Dulwich CARES.

Please note: To facilitate this there will not be a Junior School Assembly next Friday 13th September.

Finally, I look forward to seeing you at the Parent Information evening taking place on Wednesday 11th September.Have a lovely weekend.

House Captain Election

For the upcoming year, the school will be placing a heightened emphasis on our school House Competitions and activities. There will be little change in the structure of the House system, but more responsibility will be delegated to the House Captains. In addition, the nature of House Competitions this year will encompass more of the skills and talents that our diverse school community has to share.

Next Friday (13th September), we will be holding the election process for the House Captains for the 2013-2014 academic year. This year we are specifically looking for students who can lead and, more importantly, motivate their fellow House members. If you are interested in becoming a House Captain, you will need to prepare a no longer than 2-minute speech for Friday13th. In your speech you may wish to consider:

•Whatmakesyouagreatmotivator•HowyoucanunifyyourHousemembersandbuildteamspirit•YourplansandideasforyourHousethisyear•WhyyoubelieveyourHouseisthebestandwillsucceedthisyear.

For the House Captains presentation, you can prepare a Powerpoint or create a poster, but most importantly, your speech must be well-planned.

May the Force Be With You!

This week the Year 6 classes have starting looking at their topic ‘Forces of Nature’. Throughout the week children have been investigating explanation texts in Literacy. Using the inspiration of ‘Bang goes the theory’ the pupils have been explaining why balls floats on water, the impact of friction on cars and magnetic forces. Soon the Year 6s will be turning their focus to natural disasters and explaining hurricanes, tornadoes and cyclones!

Dulwich CARES

Year 5 have had a very busy start of term settling into their new classes and making new friends. We have also been thinking about the Dulwich CARES values and what they mean to us. Each class is preparing a display which the children have designed collaboratively. We have also begun or topic work which for the first part of the term is based on water and rivers. All the new students who have joined Year 5 have settled in very well and our existing children have done a fantastic job making them feel welcome.

Year 2

During the last two weeks the Year Two children have been having lots of fun settling into their new classes. They have made lots of new friends and explored their new classrooms with their new teachers. Year Two are excellent at teamwork, and have been playing and learning together.

This week the children have been hunting for different materials and exploring their properties. They have also been enjoying Traditional Tales through reading, role-play and writing. Look out there’s trolls about!

Year 1

The children in Year 1 have already been having lots of fun exploring their new classrooms, making new friends and adjusting to new routines.

After lunch on Monday the children were all settling down to a story with Mrs. Curran in the reading area, when a blur of red came rushing towards them. It was a flying visit from the superhero ‘Flash’. He had lost his superhero friends and was looking to recruit some more. He had heard that Dulwich College Seoul might be the place to find them!

He asked the children what made someone ‘super’ and if they thought they might have any superpowers and if they could practise these over the next few weeks. We are hoping he will return when we have learnt all about ‘Superheroes’ and maybe recruit some of the children!

After Flash had left, the children were very excited and talked to each other a lot about his visit…

“A superman called Flash came and I thought he needed help with Green Lantern.” Noah Jones (1MC)

“Flash wanted the children to be in his team.” Maisarah Choudhury (1MC)

“I liked Flash because he had flashing lights.” Elijah Shinn (1MC)

“I think Flash helps people with his powers.” Alexis Lee (1MC)

KS1 Playtimes

The children in Key Stage 1 have been greatly enjoying playtimes this term. In addition to the equipment that is available on the field, there is also a lot of new play equipment on the KS1 terrace.

Children have loved playing with space hoppers, hiding in the tents, building with the new construction and playing in the water trays. Classes have a rota to ensure that everyone gets a turn to spend some playtimes on the terrace as well as on the field.

Over the next few weeks we will also be introducing a sand pit, painting easels and gardening equipment. The only disappointment for some children is that they cannot play there every day!
