First Year at a Glance
Rules for the school were worked out by the
United Students of Eisenhower council wi
th Dean
Weyrick* as temporary president. In the
forward
of the student handbook, called The Cade
t, he
says, “Remember, this is our school and
it
will hold the name and reputation we, th
e first
students, give it.” *Dean Weyrick return
ed to
teach at Eisenhower from 1968 to 1994.
Car Regulations – worked out by the
students themselves – were strict and cr
eated
to ensure Eisenhower school would be “a
welcome
neighbor rather than a pest.”
Dedication – Over 4,000 people attended
the dedication for Dwight D. Eisenhower High
and Woodrow Wilson Junior High schools. State
Superintendent of Public Instruction, Lloyd J.
Andrews, delivered a message, as well a
s Yakima
School District Superintendent, Milton L
. Martin.

School Branding - After hearing about the choice of school colors, the Cadet mascot, and creation of the Five Star Journal, Congressman Hal Holmes (R-Wash) wrote the superintendent of schools: “This choice of such a patriotic motif is indicative of the fine spirit there is in the Yakima schools, and I hasten to congratulate you for fostering it.”
Student Body Debt incurred to set up new school: $11,000. In an effort to raise money to repay the debt, United Students of Eisenhower sponsored a work day before the holiday season – housecleaning, babysitting, addressing Christmas cards, and a bake sale – and volunteer gardening in the spring.
In March of the first school year, to support the students’ hard work to satisfy this debt, the Eisenhower faculty presented the drama, “The Passing of the Third Floor Back,” to assist in fundraising efforts.

“What a beautiful and practical new school! The use of natural light was particularly impressive.”- Paul & Kristy Larson, 2009 Bond Co-Chairs
“The new school is majestic, a fantastic center of learning for anyone who is lucky enough to go here.”- John Feltrup, Student
In November of 1954, Yakima voters approved a $2,925,000 bond issue which included
monies for Eisenhower Senior High School / Wilson Junior High, Lincoln Elementary,
and new physical facilities at Davis High School and Yakima Valley Junior College. The
total cost of the new Eisenhower / Wilson facility, designed by the architectural firm of
Cowan & Paddock, was $2,533,752 or approximately $12.87 per square foot. The school
first opened its doors in 1957 with Eisenhower occupying the east wing of the building and
Wilson Junior High the west wing. At that time, the building was designed for a capacity of
approximately 1,300 students.
Aside from a small classroom addition in 1986, there were no major improvements made to
Eisenhower since it was originally built. As school was dismissed for the last time in June
2013, it stood with approximately 220,000 square feet.
In 2009, Yakima voters passed a $114 million bond issue with a nearly 70% approval
rate. State matching funds brought the total to more than $218 million to go towards
the replacement of Eisenhower High School, modernization of Davis High School, and
extensive work at four elementary schools and Stanton Academy. The total costs for the
new Eisenhower, at 327,000 square feet, will be approximately $108 million.
Groundbreaking ceremonies took place on the 40-acre site near 44th and Tieton Drive on
September 1, 2011. Construction began shortly thereafter and the school was ready in time
for students to begin classes on the first day, August 27, 2013.
“Eisenhower is one of our flagship schools in the Yakima School District. These new buildings proclaim loud and clear the importance of education in this community. When the people of Yakima passed the construction bond four
years ago, it was an unwavering commitment to the youth of our valley. This building that we stand in today is the spectacular fruit of that commitment.” - Phil English, Science Teacher / Track & Field and Cross Country Coach
“Amazing things happen with patience and perseverance.” - Tina Strom, Paraeducator
