Most college athletes get scholarships of about $25,000 a year, so its not like they're not getting anything in return for playing sports there. Also people go to college to learn and get an education, not necessarily to play sports. If they get paid to play, then when they are trying to decide which school to go to they won’t be looking at how good the school is, just how much they will be getting paid. The students should be thinking more about education and less about getting paid.

A benefit to paying college athletes is if a player ends up not going to the pros they could use the money to help them out financially until they find a job. Also they make tons of money for their schools and they don’t see a penny of it. Don’t you think it would be fair if they at least got a small portion of the money? I do.

CBSSports.com surveyed 100 college coaches on whether or not college athletes should be paid. 58% said yes they should, and 42% said no they shouldn’t. Some had ideas for an end of semester stipend. Here are some notable anonymous quotes from coaches:

No, they get scholarships, crazy amounts of free gear and they are glorified enough as it is. If they get paid to play they will have more power than they already do.

No, no one is forcing them to play. And most schools can’t afford to pay everyone in division 1 sports.

Yes, they should make a few thousand a semester. They make their schools a lot of money and they should see some of it.

Do you agree with the coaches or do you think the athletes should remain non-paid? After hearing all about both sides which do you agree with?
