Team Building & Leadership Development Sailing has for many
years been recognised as an effective way to implement an effective
learning
environment to develop skills in the corporate world. Many of the
techniques of building a sporting
team are directly transferable to the work environment and sailing
is no exception. One of the many
strengths of sailing as the tool is the diversity of skills
required to sail a boat. Yacht racing has been
widely accepted as one of the most technically demanding sports in
the world. Therefore, it is no
surprise that there are many different skills required to build a
team on a sailing boat ranging from
physical strengths to intellectual prowess, from the strategists to
the communicators, from the creative
thinkers to the technically astute. Identifying, nurturing and
embracing these qualities to form an
effective team are critical in success.
The Strategy Challenge! The objective of the Strategy Challenge is
to accumulate the highest financial return during a two-hour
session of sailing. There are several floating buoys (markers) on
the sea in the close proximity of Emirates
Palace Marina. Each buoy has been given a monetary value with the
ones furthest away having the
highest value and the closest ones the lowest value. These are all
marked on the chart.
After some basic training in navigation and sailing the
team has to develop a strategy to accumulate the
highest amount of revenue they can. The team then sails
the yacht and executes the plan.
There are various rules introduced with financial penalties
applied for non-compliance. In addition there are
various ways to earn bonuses such as changing the
helmsman every ten minutes.
Penalties will be applied for every minute the team is late
in completing the task and there are bonuses for finishing
early. The team can also use their funds to purchase
knowledge from the professional sailing staff on board.
The carefully thought out rules will encourage many of
the skills that are required for effective team
management.

During the adventure what is of paramount importance is the
effective de-briefing after each maneuver or challenge to
identify
things that went well, things that went badly and things that can
be
improved on. This encourages gradual improvements to the
teamwork using proven methods utilising professional
facilitators.
Sailing is widely recognised as one of the most technically
challenging sports in the world. There are many synergies
between building a sailing team and a successful team in the work
place.
The Skills are directly transferable
