my ViewSharon Westerholm, EO In talking to some

of our Builder Members, it sounds like building is going at a much better rate than the last couple of years. It appears as though everyone is busy. Some of the feedback tells us that

having a booth in the Home, Garden and Sport Show was a boost in getting started this spring. If you haven’t had a booth, maybe you should think about it. Don’t wait too long. We filled out last year and I am guessing we will again in 2013. We have been busy sending out emails to get booths booked early and will be following up with a first mailer of postcards in about a week to a prospect list of 400. The email went out this morning and calls are coming in. We aren’t sending out all the registration materials to begin with, (trying to cut down on printing and postage costs). We will send out the rest of the info after we get an email or postcard back.

All of our months for meetings are filled through our last meeting in May with our Picnic and Trap Shoot. That was a lot of fun last year, and we plan on combining the two things again in 2013. If you have some things you would like to have as a meeting, please call the office and talk to Sharon or Brenda so we can get it lined up.

If you would like to serve on the board of Directors, please consider doing so. We are in need of board members for the 2013 through 2015 term. If you have questions or concerns about serving on the board, talk to one of the existing board members or call the office. Have a Great October!

Thanks to the hard work of our members and our local HBA staff, our federation is getting very close to our goal of "beating" 2011's membership tally. To help end 2012 strong and start 2013 off with a bang, NAHB is an-nouncing a new fall membership drive to provide local HBAs and Spikes with an extra incentive to help us reach our goals: the beat 2011 surge.

Joining the Beat 2011 Surge is simple to do and the rewards for your HBA could potentially be very large. To participate, your HBA must notify NAHB of your intent by filling out a web form and hold a membership drive in November and report its results (Builders and Associate mem-bers only) to NAHB on Tuesday, Nov. 13. Results will also be reported by filling out a form on the NAHB website and your pledge totals can be updated throughout the month of November. Signing up and opting-in is easy to do and you and your members will have the opportunity to get amply rewarded for their time.

In addition to the cash back your HBA will be eligible to receive if it suc-ceeds in beating its 2011 membership total, the Beat 2011 Surge is going to provide another opportunity for your hba to get some cold, hard

cash. The local hba that wins their size category will receive $75 for each member recruited during the drive.

For example, if your local HBA wins its category with a total of 100 new Builder and Associate members, your HBA will bring home $7,500.

Spikes are also eligible to get in on the action. Any Spike who recruits a new member during the drive will re-ceive double spike credits. When a Spike brings in 11 or more new mem-bers, he or she receives quadruple spike credits for each member they recruit above 10.

For example, if a Spike recruits 15 new members, he or she receives 40 Spike Credits: Recruits 1-10 will count double (10x2 = 20 credits) and recruits 11-15 will count quadruple (5x4 = 20 credits). Top Spikes will also have the opportunity to win additional tickets to the Spike Party at the 2013 Interna-tional Builders Show in Las Vegas!

The Beat 2011 Surge is a great op-portunity to end 2012 on a high note, while starting 2013 off with some extra cash in the bank for your HBA. Addi-tional details and complete compete-tion rules will be coming soon.

It is with great regret that the Builders Association of Minne-sota (BAM) Executive Commit-tee accepted the resignation of Pamela Perri, BAM’s Executive Vice President, at the BAM Board of Directors meeting Wednesday, September 6. Her last day with the association is October 1.

Perri has led BAM through the most dramatic decade in the history of the U.S. home building industry. She has been instrumen-tal in keeping the agenda of the

residential construction industry viable at the State Capitol and at the State regulatory agencies. There is no doubt, if you worked with Pam and her staff, you know their passion and energy for our industry is boundless. She will be missed.

While we are sorry to see her go, we share her excitement as she accepts a new job opportunity near her family in Chicago, Illinois. BAM intends to give Perri a proper send off, so stay tuned for details.

During the BAM Board of Direc-

tors meeting, BAM President Keith Kylmala expressed how grateful the members are to Pam, yet at the same time, change means opportu-nity. BAM is well-positioned for the future and the Board is committed to keeping BAM at the heart of the industry’s political operations.

Kylmala appointed Mike Gohman (2010 BAM President) to head up the search committee to find Perri’s successor

BAM is holding a series of dis-cussions about BAM’s future and value in light of Pam Perri’s resigna-tion as BAM EVP. As a member of the association, you are invited to join us Wednesday October 3rd at the BAM office at one of two times. Session 1 is from 9:00am to noon. Session 2 is from 12:30-3:30pm.

There is a limited amount of space so you must RSVP to reserve your spot. Each session will be filled in the order RSVP’s are received. Please RSVP to Katherine Nielsen at [email protected]. BAM’s ad-dress is 525 Park Street, Suite 150, St. Paul, MN 55103. Directions to our office are found here. If you did not see the email announcement or last week’s We look forward to seeing you on the 3rd.

BAM Government Relations Report

This week was a busy one at BAM as several committees met at BAM’s new office. The GR Com-mittee discussed where we’re at in

the code cycle. The Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) has yet to publish the IRC, which may or may not include a fire sprinkler requirement for single-family new construction. DLI has also not yet published the Residential Energy Code, which may or may not in-clude mold-causing and expensive building practices.

Kathe Ostrom, who sits on both BAM’s GR Committee and DLI’s Construction Codes Advisory Council (CCAC) learned this week that the CCAC meeting scheduled for September had been cancelled and the next meeting won’t likely be until the end of October. The CCAC is required to review the codes before they can be published, meaning we will likely not know whether sprinklers are included in DLI’s draft IRC code or what the energy code will say until late October. Stay tuned.

BAM’s GR Committee is work-ing on a solution for the Contrac-

tor Recovery Fund with DLI as promised in the joint letter sent last session to the Legislature from BAM and DLI. The next two GR meetings are scheduled for October 17th and December 5th.

SAVE THE DATE! JANUARY 30th is BAM’s Builder Day at the Capitol

BAM’s Builder Day at the Capitol for the 2013 session will be January 30th. Mark your calendars! This year we plan to be at the Capi-tol in force. Following the election we will have some educating of new legislators to do, and it’s important we get them up to speed early in the session.

A task force has been created to plan this year’s BAM Builder Day at the Capitol. GR Chair Chad Kompelien has requested a member from each local association par-ticipate. Please contact Katherine Nielsen at [email protected] if you’d like to participate.

$75.00 for each new member we have over the number we had on December 31st, 2011. This runs through December 31st, 2012. Because of this, the LRBA board, with the recommendation of Tim Roble who is chair of the membership com-mittee, decided to do our own membership campaign. We are going to give $25.00 to the member that brings in a new member. We need to get our subs and others to join our Association. We can do this by promoting what you as a member get out of being a member, by having NAHB and BAM working on trying to make sure the laws and regulations make for good practices for the builder and consumers. In monetary benefits, by having Verizon for themselves and their employ-ees, will usually cover the cost of your membership plus more. Let’s get people to know the advantages of being a member and shoot for 30 new members for this year. As of the end of September we are only ahead one new member.

“spiFF For buCks” “SPIFF FOR BUCKS” is our new member campaign for 2012. The NAHB will be giving the Association back 50% or

As of the end of September we are only ahead one new member.

my ViewSharon Westerholm, EO In talking to some

of our Builder Members, it sounds like building is going at a much better rate than the last couple of years.

Safety is a Way of Life

Our September 13th meeting was well attended, with over 40 members there. The Builders Group sponsored our meeting with dinner and information on “What OSHA Wants”. Wayne Pe-terson did an excellent job going over some of things, Fall Protec-tion (being harnessed) and mak-ing sure your AWAIR book is up to date. It was suggested at the meeting that we hold a class on the AWAIR book, however, we’ve held an OSHA 10 class with over a full hour on the AWAIR program and another hour at the tech ear-lier this year. If you need help with getting your safety manual in order, contact Sharon.

“Your Hometown Quality Builder & Remodelers”

Hello! Fall is here and so are the elections! Hopefully everyone will get out and vote. It seems as if the elections are more impor-tant this year than ever. Let’s hope for a favorable outcome toward the housing industry. As of October 1st BAM’s EO Pam Perri will no longer be with the Association. BAM has put together a committee to research a replacement for Pam. Although small in physical size, those are some pretty big shoes to fill! The new sub-contractor registration law was put into effect on September 15th. It looked like at first the repeal of the old Independent Contractor law was a good thing. After getting acquainted, with the new system, I find myself asking, what’s going on here? It should be interesting to see where it leads to. Our September meeting was hosted by Wayne from the Builders Group. As usual, the meeting was very in-formative. If you missed it try to make the next… which will be on October 18th at the Speak Easy with Eric Sundby as our speaker.
