Hybrid Cloud Users Demand Flexibility And Security
Overview
To meet the needs of the digital customer, organizations need infrastructure that is flexible and able to
scale up or down as capacity is needed. This flexibility and scalability allows organizations to maintain
high availability and performance of critical applications, meet demand requirements that can vary during
seasonal business shifts, save costs by scaling down when resources are not needed, and maintain
disaster recovery and continuity protocols. However, the infrastructure needs to be secure, as security
is the most important infrastructure and operations priority for 2017. Organizations can ensure that their
infrastructure is both flexible and secure by taking advantage of the capabilities of today’s hybrid public
cloud solutions.
This VMware-commissioned profile of US and UK IT decision-makers responsible for their organization’s
cloud platform strategy evaluates the challenges and benefits of using hybrid public cloud environments.

Top three infrastructure
priorities in 2017:
• Data center security
• App performance/uptime
• Reduce data center costs
Today’s Infrastructure Needs To Balance Security And Flexibility
With highly damaging data leaks and security breaches seemingly a weekly occurrence in the news, data
security has become a top priority for the entire IT organization, including infrastructure and operations.
This is on top of other essential initiatives like ensuring application availability and performance,
maintaining disaster recovery protocols, and lowering data center costs — all of which require
infrastructure flexibility. To juggle the need for security and flexibility, more and more organizations are
utilizing hybrid public cloud environments that allow infrastructure and operations teams to combine the
scalability and flexibility of public cloud with the security of on-premises infrastructure.

Cloud Environments Still Have Perceived
Security And Support Challenges
Unfortunately, one of infrastructure and operations (I&O)’s top
priorities is also perceived as a cloud infrastructure challenge.
Forrester’s Global Business Technographics® Infrastructure
Survey, 2015, surveyed US and UK organizations using public cloud.
It showed that security and privacy remain major concerns
for organizations using multiple cloud environments. While security
and privacy are top challenges, the acceleration of cloud adoption
has raised additional challenges as well:
› Twenty-seven percent have challenges tracking costs across
multiple clouds.
› Twenty-five percent face application support issues.

Less than half of survey
respondents are able to
dynamically scale capacity in
their public cloud. Thirty percent
are still manually provisioning
public cloud capacity today.
The Majority Of Organizations Cannot Dynamically Scale Across
Hybrid Infrastructure
In order to effectively serve customers today, organizations must have a flexible infrastructure that can
easily scale up as capacity is required to ensure app performance, but also scale down when not needed
for cost savings. This is one of the key capabilities that makes public cloud so appealing today. However,
less than half of organizations Forrester surveyed are able to dynamically scale across on-premises and
public cloud infrastructures. Dynamic scaling is essential for infrastructure and operations teams to
quickly react to customer demand and maintain infrastructure performance and continuity.

Hybrid Cloud Can Provide Organizations
The Security And Flexibility Needed
Hybrid cloud can be used to ensure application uptime and business
continuity, control costs through data center consolidation, and
maintain data center flexibility. Forrester’s Global Business
Technographics Infrastructure Survey, 2015, shows that the top
benefits of hybrid cloud include:
› Improved infrastructure management and flexibility. Identical
configurations across on- and off-premises infrastructures are
supported with one management environment.
› Improved disaster recovery and business continuity. Hybrid
cloud offers automated processes and proven failback.
› Better IT cost management. By being able to consolidate data
centers as well as shut down temporary capacity when it is not
needed, I&O can help control and lower infrastructure costs.
› Improved security and compliance. Organizations can use
identical environments in all locations.
› Access to capacity to meet demand spikes. Organizations
have the ability to scale additional capacity in seconds.

Selecting The Right Public Cloud Platform
Is Key To Unlocking Hybrid Cloud Benefits
With security a perceived challenge of public cloud, it is no surprise
that organizations value both network and application security
highest when selecting a public cloud platform. Public cloud
providers have recognized the importance of security today
and have taken great strides to improve.
When selecting a cloud provider, you need to be sure not only
that the public cloud platform gives you the flexibility and scalability
needed to ensure application availability and control costs, but also
that your platform is secure. This requires the extension of good
on-premises security practices such as a hardened software stack,
network virtualization, network segmentation, encryption of data in
transit and at rest, and the ability to validate the applicability of
workload execution by location.
The promise of cloud is to deliver lower cost of ownership along
with flexibility, allowing organizations a choice in where they deliver
workloads.

Conclusion
Organizations utilize public cloud for improved data center flexibility, business continuity, disaster
recovery, and cost management. However, many users are concerned about the security of public cloud,
and most are not making the most of public cloud’s ability to dynamically scale up and down. When
selecting a public cloud provider, organizations should make sure that security capabilities are in place,
that they will be able to dynamically scale to meet demand spikes, and that they have the appropriate
governance in place, including effective cost hygiene.
METHODOLOGY
› This Technology Adoption Profile was commissioned by VMware. To create this profile, we leveraged
Forrester’s Global Business Technographics Infrastructure Survey, 2015. Forrester Consulting
supplemented this data with custom survey questions asked of 110 US and UK IT decision-makers at
organizations with 500 or more employees using public hybrid cloud.
› The auxiliary custom survey was completed in September 2016. For more information on Forrester’s
