A Community of
Housing and Hope
for Women
About us
“Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.” Muhammad Ali
WOMEN | INSPIRED | SUPPORTED | EMPOWERED
WISEPlace, a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization, is a
community of housing and hope for women in crisis.
Formerly the South Orange County YWCA, WISEPlace
has over a 90-year history of caring for the community.
By meeting basic needs such as housing, clothing,
physical and emotional nourishment, as well as
vocational and life skills training, the WISEPlace Hotel
for Women is one of the few places unaccompanied
homeless women can go to begin again.
WISEPlace WORKS! In our 30th year of providing
shelter for women, we helped 136 women
through 3 of our programs. Approximately 41 of the
women that completed our programs maintained
or moved into permanent housing.
Our intent is to end homelessness. 2

As we reflect on 30 years of saving the lives of homeless women in Orange County, we realize we have much to celebrate. Upwards of 8,000 women have found a safe place to get their lives back. We have evolved from the YWCA to WISEPlace and have established WISEPlace as the place where unaccompanied homeless women in Orange County not only belong, but flourish.
We believe beyond the shadow of a doubt that we are in our pre-dawn hours of the rebirth of our agency. We know the sun is on the horizon and we can begin to see and feel it. After a couple of disappointing years as funding for our transitional model slowed to a trickle and many traditional funders shifted focus, we are now on a path to expand our territory. While we continue to be committed to our program of moving women with the capacity to become self-sufficient to financial and emotional independence, we recognize the need to embrace unaccompanied homeless women who do not fit our traditional model.
We will continue our “Steps to Independence” program and our Positive Step program, which approximates a time-limited permanent supportive housing program. Additionally, we will embark on a capital campaign to convert the valuable asset that is the building in which we have operated since the mid 1950’s into a multi-purpose space including permanent supportive housing for unaccompanied formerly homeless women and a crisis shelter for unaccompanied women.
With the ongoing support of the community including the City of Santa Ana and County of Orange, we will evolve into the place where the 1 in 4 homeless adults who are unaccompanied women will find a short term safe haven, a place to transition to self-sufficiency and the long-term stability of permanent housing.
Thank you for your continued support of our community of housing and hope for women.

Kathleen Davis Bowman
Executive Director
Mrs. Bowman holds an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Finance and Commerce. Following a successful corporate career spanning over twenty-five years, Kathi joined the YWCA South Orange County as Executive Director in 1996 and saw the organization through its transition to WISEPlace in 2000. For more than twenty years prior to joining the YWCA, Mrs. Bowman contributed her time and talents to numerous non-profit and church organizations in advocacy of women and children. She brought her passion for helping those in need and business acumen to the position of Executive Director of this social service agency focused on saving the lives of homeless women. Kathi has worked with the Board to establish WISEPlace as the premier resource for unaccompanied homeless women in Orange County.

30 Years of Shelter for Women: Commemorative TilesA ‘home’ for women in crisisOn March 18, 1987, the Hotel for Women opened its doors at the then YWCA of
South Orange County. This was a project born out of the realization that the
population of homeless women in and around Santa Ana was growing rapidly.
There was a lack of shelter available for women in crisis, and the streets were
becoming home for too many. This was the beginning of a journey that would
eventually lead to the founding of WISEPlace.
The “Hotel for Women”Constructed atop the existing gymnasium, The Hotel for Women was built as a 20-
room, 30-bed shelter. Some rooms were built as single-occupancy units with a
bathroom en suite. The remainder of the rooms were built as double-occupancy
units, with access to dormitory-style bathroom and shower facilities. There is a large
living room and patio, accessible to all residents, that truly embodies a feeling of
home. Each room is fully furnished with comforts of home.
Becoming WISEPlaceIt became obvious to the Board of the YWCA; simply allowing homeless women to
shelter under their roof was not the solution to the growing problem of
homelessness in the area. For over 8 years, the YWCA operated The Hotel for
Women, but it was now time to do MORE. It was time to provide an education.
Kathleen Davis Bowman was hired to become the first (and only!) Executive
Director of WISEPlace, a transitional housing and empowerment program that
would provide wrap-around services to help homeless women become
independent. WISEPlace disaffiliated from the YWCA and since 1999, WISEPlace
has been operating as a full-service program for unaccompanied homeless women.
Commemorative Tiles To honor this achievement as we forge ahead enthusiastically, we initiated a
Commemorative Tile Program to honor those who have loved and supported
WISEPlace over the years. We sold over $20,000 in tiles, and showcased the final
project in an Open House on August 25. Tiles were donated by Joan Seligman.
Engraving was donated by Tustin Awards. Custom artwork on each tile was hand-
painted by Linda Clair. Custom framing, tilework and installation was donated by
Nate and Kristen Bloser and a team from Mercedes Benz Research &
Development. Tiles were installed in the downstairs corridor, over our living rooms
and the Silver Hall and next to 11 resident’s bedrooms in the Hotel for Women.

Community Fundraising
After a successful “I HEART Giving” fundraising campaign --
facilitated by Orange County Community Foundation in 2016 --
WISEPlace continued the tradition on our own this year!
After 54 hours of intense outreach, we raised over $20,000,
which included a generous matching gift from an anonymous
contributor! Pictures on this page are grabs from videos our staff
and volunteers created to help promote the campaign. 12

Digital Marketing with Listrak
Thank you to Listrak for generously donating
their software and marketing services
Through our relationship with UPS, WISEPlace
was referred to Listrak, a company at the
forefront of retail email marketing innovation,
providing world-class software, solutions, and
services.
With one-on-one training and specialized
services geared towards our small non-profit,
Listrak has provided us with the most innovative
opportunities to measure our outreach. Designed
for large retailers, WISEPlace has also been able
to help Listrak learn how to provide their services
for non-profits and other small companies.

achieving independence
A WISEPlace resident’s journey
Margie* entered WISEPlace “Steps to Independence” on February 13, 2017. She had recently turned 20, and her mother kicked her out for not complying with the rules of the home. Her mother told her that she needed to gain independence and learn to become self-motivated.
Margie was very young when she witnessed her mother going through domestic violence. Her mother left the home and lived as a single mother raising two daughters.
Margie entered WISEPlace with employment, but was not financially disciplined until she began meeting with our Financial Empowerment Manager. Once she began working the program and utilizing the services offered, she was able to set goals. This boosted her self confidence! Her loftiest goals were to obtain permanent housing and maintain employment, along with losing weight and having a healthy lifestyle.
Margie set a goal to obtain employment that would increase her income for her desired lifestyle after WISEPlace. While moving forward in the program, making financial progress and obtaining a new position with a new employer, Margie was able to save AND maintain her program fees. Margie also began to repair relationships with her mother and sister. One thing she is looking forward to after WISEPlace is “being the best woman that she can be -- no matter what.”
Margie is a success, having completed Phases 1-3 of “Steps to Independence,” and transitioning into the Single Room Occupancy program.

Our Financial Empowerment Program teaches women
basic financial literacy. Our program starts with
employment and ends after the successful transition into
housing. WISE Beginnings, is our internship program for
women with barriers to employment. Women that
complete our program know how to compete in today’s
job market, create and live by a budget, save for the
future, and have realistic housing goals.
FinancialEmpowerment
Our Case Management team visits the places
where homeless women not currently involved in
our program are seeking crisis shelter, including
The Courtyard and Civic Center in Santa Ana
and the riverbeds and Angel Stadium in Anaheim.
Our team does their best to counsel women on
site and offer resources to help them move out of
crisis sheltering and into a program such as
WISEPlace.
CrisisOutreach
The Steps to Independence Program provided a
home for 136 women last year, when they needed
it the most. Women find themselves homeless for
many different reasons; some have endured a
catastrophic financial set-back, others have
struggled with alcohol or substance abuse and
chronic homelessness. For our youngest women,
turning 18 meant that they were emancipated from
the only home they had. Our senior women have
many health and job-related challenges.
The Steps program provides safe and affordable
housing, employment assistance,
case management, financial empowerment, meals,
clothing, individual and group psychological
counseling, and linkages to the community.
Our Positive Step Program is a second step home that
helps women that have been chronically homeless or
at risk of homelessness build upon their success in the
Steps to Independence Program. Women can use
additional time to work through the conditions that led
to homelessness in their life. With a focus on health,
wellness, and stability, the Positive Step program
helps remove longstanding barriers to independent
living. Last year, 3 women that completed the program
moved to our permanent supportive housing.
Positive Step
For women who need a place to regroup while
finding permanent housing, we offer our Single-
room Occupancy (SRO) program. The women
in this program stay up to 3 months in a single-
occupancy room with bath and they have fewer
program requirements, but are welcome to
access all aspects of our Steps program. They
pay fees (rent) on a monthly rather than weekly
basis.
