New School Immunization Law: AB 354 September 2010: AB 354 required all
students entering 7th-12th grades in 2011-12 in California to submit proof of Tdap immunization (whooping cough booster).
December 2010: AB 354 Task Force
formed
SB 614, an optional 30-day grace period, went into effect on July 25th, 2011
AB 354 Task Force
Convened on monthly basis
Coordinated outreach to schools, students, parents
Strategized methods for AB 354 implementation including Tdap proof collection, electronic records, exclusion plan
Communication to Schools “Vax fax” – A one-page fax containing information, updates,
and resources. Sent to all schools every 1-2 mos. Implementation materials (blue card stickers, personal belief
exemption forms, and instructions) sent to all schools in February/March
Presentations at Middle School’s Principal’s Meeting, High School Principal’s Meeting, and to Secondary Counselors and Assistant Principals
Outreach table at School Planning Summit San Francisco Immunization Coalition provided SF Giants
tickets/hats/pins used as incentives for schools and home room teachers to obtain immunization records from students
Encouraged school staff to visit www.shotsforschool.org for AB 354 tools, information, and resources in multiple languages
Student Tdap Videos San Francisco Immunization Coalition worked with students to create videos to raise awareness of Pertussis and the new Tdap law.

Autodialers (3 languages) to all families of 6th-12th grade students
Posted information on SFUSD website and school websites (3 languages)
District letters sent to students and families (3 languages)
AB 354 message included on every 6th-12th grade final report card mailed to homes
Encouraged parents to visit www.shotsforschool.org for tools, information, and resources in multiple languages
Communication to Providers “Vax fax” sent on monthly basis containing updates,
recommendations, and resources Submitted articles to San Francisco Medicine Magazine
and Primary Care Connections newsletter (UCSF) Hosted a pediatric provider discussion on AB 354
implementation Communication with health plans & medical groups Encouraged providers to visit www.sfcdcp.org and
www.shotsforschool.org for tools, information, and resources
Free Mass Tdap Clinics Three clinics held at Roosevelt MS, O’Connell HS, French
American Intl School Vaccinated ~1,000 students Utilized AB 354 to test POD plans Entered all vaccinations given into CAIR (CA Immunization
Registry) San Francisco Health Plan was at each clinic to conduct
outreach, eligibility screening and set-up appointments Coordinated efforts with other SFCC departments – SFUSD,
DEM, DPW, SFFD, Sheriff ’s Department Conducted Just in Time training for about 300 volunteers Employed Incident Command System Tested FastTrack, a mobile applications, to track vaccine
inventory and time patients flow through clinic

Back to School: August 2011 School district nurses offered Tdap at schools Maxim clinics held at interested schools Associate Superintendent’s office conducted
daily calls to all public middle and high schools to check-in on status of Tdap compliance
COPC sites including Larkin Street Youth Clinic, Cole Street Clinic, Balboa Teen Clinic, and Castro Mission Health Center provided Tdap immunizations to non-patients
School district nurses and task force members held an all-day Tdap clinic at District Office for excluded students on September 15th

All schools must submit Tdap report to
state by December 1, 2011. In 2012 all 7th graders will be required to
show proof of Tdap.
