At the end of this packet is a fitting calendar with the date and time of your scheduled fitting. We do our best to assign fitting times based on when actors are called to rehearsal, but, depending on the size of the cast, that may not be possible. We will NOT schedule a fitting on a night when an actor has a conflict. It is very important that you attend your fitting and that you are on time (5 minutes early). Very often, we ask actors to provide certain articles of clothing for the production. We will tell you at your fitting exactly what those will be. Once you are cast in the show it is very important that you do not get a haircut or color without the permission and guidance of the directors and designers.

Playbill Advertising & Spirits Rosie Schatkowski [email protected] Your friends and family members have an opportunity to support you and Civic Theatre by placing an ad and/or spirit in the ACC playbill! There is a Playbill Advertising Form as well as a Spirit form at the end of the packet. If someone would like to place an ad and/or Spirit, please give them the form(s) to complete and send by email with the ad copy to Rosie Schatkowski at [email protected]. If they have the ad prepared- GREAT! If not, we will create an ad for them. All ads are black & white. Thank you for helping provide financial support for Civic Theatre! Any questions contact Rosie Schatkowski. Cast T-Shirts

Beginning this year, we will be doing cast t-shirts differently. Moving forward, every cast member will receive a t-shirt as a gift from the theatre! Please email your preferred size to our Stage Manager, Emily O’Connor at [email protected] by November 15th. If we do not receive your size by the deadline, you will not be able to receive a shirt.

Cast and Crew Parking Parking near the theatre is limited. Please do not park in the parking lots of neighboring businesses, as you are likely to be ticketed or towed. You may park in the Wells Fargo Bank parking lot for rehearsals Monday – Friday after 5:00 pm, Saturdays after 2:00 and on Sundays. On show nights, please park on Allen or Liberty Streets, NOT in the Wells Fargo parking lot so patrons can use the lot.

Social Media Policy Spread the word! We encourage you to connect with us on Civic Theatre’s social networks including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Use #civictheatre and #ACC21 and encourage your friends to LIKE and SHARE! You can also send photos to Rosie Schatkowski by email in JPEG FORMAT at [email protected] to use for Civic’s marketing purposes.

Strike Information Strike is right after the last performance on Saturday, December 18. Please note that strike is required for all adult cast members. You are classified as an adult if you are part of the adult ensemble or hold any adult speaking roles. If you have able bodied friends or loved ones who are interested we always welcome the extra help in order to speed up the process – the more people we have helping, the faster it will go. For the purposes of safety, young actors are asked not to stay. HOWEVER, any parent/guardian who would like to stay and assist with strike is very welcome to do so!

Attendance All actors must attend all rehearsals and performances. Once you have turned in your conflict calendar, NO new conflicts are permitted. You will be expected to attend all scheduled rehearsals for which you have not listed a conflict. The only allowable excuses are serious or contagious illness and legitimate, explained family emergency. Please read and sign the agreement found in the last section of this packet. This is a very compact rehearsal schedule, for everyone. Young actors do not have many rehearsals: Adults have 22 or fewer. Significant progress is made at every rehearsal. Therefore, you will miss a great deal if you miss rehearsal. Absence may affect your degree of participation; for example, you will be cut from scenes if you miss initial rehearsals. If an actor is absent from rehearsal without prior notice and approval from the director, he or she will be removed entirely from the production. These actions are not meant as a punishment. We simply cannot put an actor on stage who is unprepared to perform, and the only way to be prepared is to attend rehearsal. Since we received your conflict calendar at auditions, we will honor no others due to sports, school performances, homework deadlines, trips, etc. In no case will we excuse a cast member from a performance. Only rarely will a rehearsal be cancelled due to inclement weather. Performances are cancelled only if major roads are closed by order of the state. In the event of bad weather, please make sure that you allow plenty of time to get to the theatre safely and on time.

Atmosphere

Civic Theatre is a safe space. Absolutely no bullying of any kind is allowed. Any bullying will result in dismissal from the production. Cast members are expected to maintain a positive and nurturing attitude at all times. Many factors go into casting the production. If you did not get the role you were hoping for, please remember that many others in the production feel the same way. Some people were not cast at all. You accepted the role we offered you. May you be happy with the role you have chosen!

Picking Up Young Actors We will post the anticipated rehearsal release time on the theatre door and it is generally on the schedule. Rehearsal may run later than this time, but it will give you a good guideline for when to pick up your child. Young actors may not leave before the

Page 4: A CHRISTMAS CAROL CAST PACKET - civictheatre.com

rehearsal is over, unless you informed us of a conflict on the calendar you filled out at auditions. Young actors will be supervised outside the building after rehearsals and performances. Please make sure that your child is picked up within 10 minutes of the end of the rehearsal or performance. Please do not come upstairs to the rehearsal hall to wait for your child. Space and silence are both at a premium up there. We also do not allow anyone outside of the cast and production staff inside of the theatre during rehearsals. Performances last approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. The cast takes the stage for curtain call from the back of the theatre and there is no room for anyone else back there. Therefore, unfortunately, you may not enter the theatre until the performance is over.

Communication Unless specifically instructed otherwise, please address all communications during the rehearsal and performance periods to Emily at 570-926-0304 or [email protected]. She is fully authorized to represent the theatre in all matters related to the production. Please don’t call the Box Office. If a theatre staff member needs to address your situation, the Production Stage Manager will refer you to the appropriate person.

Deadlines All paperwork deadlines must be strictly adhered to. For example, if we do not receive your bio by the deadline, your name will not be included in the Playbill. PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO THE DEADLINES.

Bios for Playbill All bios must be typed and emailed by November 5 or SOONER to [email protected] to ensure placement in the Playbill. Please send it as soon as possible. Please note that due to space constraints, you must adhere to the following guidelines: • Adult principal roles: 55 word limit • Child principal roles: 35 word limit • All others: 25 word limit • Please refer to yourself in third person and use complete sentences. • Please italicize past productions that you were in.

Bios that do not meet these specifications will not be printed in the program. Example: MERYL STREEP (ROMEO) is a veteran of many Civic Theatre and Pennsylvania Playhouse productions. She has appeared in Crazy For You at the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival and is a proud member of Actor’s Equity. Her favorite roles include Mother Courage, Mame and Helen Lawson. She would like to thank her family and friends for their support.

Student Matinees We will have 4 days of student matinees: December 7, 8, 14, & 15. Performances will be at 9 AM and noon. Cast members who are in the Holly or Ivy cast are called for only two of those days. (Check your schedule.)

Student matinees are not open to the public and we cannot accommodate requests to purchase tickets for family members to attend matinees. Homeschooled students and their parents may attend matinees as part of a homeschool group, subject to seat availability. Student matinee days are long and challenging, so everyone’s cooperation with the guidelines below is greatly appreciated:

• BE ON TIME: Call is 8am. • BRING A LUNCH: Young actors, including high school students, must stay in

the theatre between performances. • STUDENT ACTORS: The performance permission slip to excuse your

absence from school is included in the last section of this packet. • ADULT ACTORS: If you need a letter for your employer, please use the adult

excuse form found in the last section of the packet. • PARKING: Do not park in front of the theatre as this is where buses unload.

You will be ticketed and towed! It is extremely important that you do not park in front of the theatre to pick up your children, even momentarily. If you are in a hurry to pick up your children and do not have time to find parking elsewhere, arrange for your children to wait outside, and then pull into the alley, north of the theatre, to pick them up. By 2:15, we have generally finished loading buses, and you are welcome to pull up in front of the theatre.

• FOOD – Please follow National Park rules! If you bring food in, you take the trash out. No food trash, coffee cups, water bottles, etc. and there is no eating in the theatre seats!

Volunteering & Clearances

All parents and guardians are strongly encouraged to volunteer for at least three shifts of parent supervision, and we encourage all parents to usher if you are able. The state of PA and Civic Theatre require copies of the following PA clearances from all cast, crew, staff, volunteers and all employees age 18 or older when working with children.

All clearances are valid for 5 years and will be kept on file. If you obtained clearances within the last 5 years for another organization and nothing has changed, you may use those. Clearances obtained for volunteer purposes are not valid for employment purposes. For full information on clearances, please visit our website at www.civictheatre.com/support/volunteer/clearances. Please obtain your clearances

Tips for Staying Healthy The #1 challenge of producing A Christmas Carol each year is coping with cast members who are absent due to illness. It’s cold and flu season as well as a continuing pandemic. Do your very best to stay healthy!

• Always have and wear your mask! • WASH YOUR HANDS! All the time! Religiously!

Use hot water and soap, and wash for 20 seconds. (Sing the alphabet song.) • Don’t share finger foods! Be careful about holiday party snacks, and PLEASE do not

bring snacks to share. For health reasons, we will discard all such snacks. • Get plenty of rest. • Eat healthy! Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, and don’t skip breakfast. Vitamin C

drops or tablets may not be a bad idea, especially if you feel like you’re starting to get a cold.

• Avoid people who are sick. If you are already feeling a little ill but you must attend rehearsal, please avoid close proximity with others!

Civic Theatre Company Membership As we had been looking for a way for us to be able to get together for events and create more of a sense of company around our wonderful theatre, a sense of being more involved, supportive, and a part of the theatre... other than when involved in a production we created the Company. The company membership is listed in our playbills. I hope that you plan to be involved. The membership fee is $25 per year and can be purchased online at www.civictheatre.com under Membership. Benefits include discounted theatre tickets and quarterly social gatherings. Children's Costumes for A Christmas Carol

URCHINS:

Urchins are asked to provide their own costumes, and your child SHOULD WEAR their costume to the following rehearsal (SUNDAY NOV. 11TH) for approval. Please note that if you are a PRO/EP, TURKEY BOY, LONDON BOY, SMALL CHILD, SCHOOL CHUM, or EB @ 6 you are then classified costume-wise as an urchin. The Basics: LAYERS: It is extremely cold outside where these children live. So, they would be layered as much as possible: shirts, high socks, gloves, vests, sweaters, and hats; anything that they could find or steal to keep warm. A look with layers is ALWAYS much more visually interesting! COLORS: Browns (NO KHAKI), grays, darker greens, darker blues, very dark reds (maroon). With Urchins, there is no such thing as “too dirty.” You are not required to “distress” or dirty the costume; however, you are more than welcome to do so if you are willing. PANTS: Heavy cotton or wool. Avoid corduroy. Textures are good! (NO KHAKI) Thrift shop pants can be easily turned into knickers with some elastic. For another look, just cut them off below the knee or at the ankle and shred the frayed edges. Add knee-high socks or leggings. NO SWEAT PANTS OR ANYTHING KNITTED AS SUCH. SWEATERS: Wool and heavy cotton. Dark and bulky. Don’t worry about sizing. NO V-NECKS. ONLY CREW STYLE. SHIRTS: You don’t need a shirt under a bulky sweater, but if you are wearing a shirt vest combination, the shirt should be a dirtied oxford of some kind. No knits or patterns. More plain. Please keep in the same color palate. ACCESSORIES: Tweed newsboy caps or plain knit hats. Dirty. Old wool scarves, knit or plaid. Knit gloves with the fingers cut off. Jackets. Vests. LAYERS!!! PLEASE NOTE THAT NOT EVERYONE NEEDS A HAT, SCARF, JACKET COMBINATION AS PICTURED. YOU MAY HAVE VARIATIONS. WE MAY CUT SOME ACCESSORIES ON THE 14TH DEPENDING ON HOW MANY OF THE SAME LOOK WE HAVE.

SHOES: Black or brown plain leather oxford shoes or prairie style boots. Again: dirty, old, beat up. Hit the thrift shops. THE PRAIRIE BOOT STYLE IS VERY BIG RIGHT NOW. THESE ARE THE BEST CHOICE AND CAN BE FOUND EVERYWHERE CURRENTLY!!! ABSOLUTELY NO TENNIS SHOES, UGS, COWBOY BOOTS, OR ANYTHING MODERN-LOOKING.

Releases: DUE BY YOUR NEXT REHEARSAL!

Please complete the agreement, release and waiver form on the next page and return it to your stage manager by the next rehearsal. You must fill out a waiver and release for each production. If you have participated in other productions or plan to, it may be a good idea to save a copy for the future.
