I hope that everyone is having a great summer and staying busy, I know that I am. I enjoyed our July meeting night with the various turning stations and such, thanks to all who participated. I hope that you all learned something new. Well the big night is here, our annual wood auction & barbecue, Thursday August 7th. The barbecue will start at 6:00 PM and the auction will follow at 7:00 PM. Tom Reiman will be our auctioneer and will do his best to get you to part with your money. The auc- tion is our biggest fundraiser of the year and the proceeds go towards bringing in demon- strators to our club and other activities. In order for our auction to be a success we need the membership to donate any type of good usable wood, tools, completed projects or just about anything else that a fellow woodturner might use. If you need any help hauling items, please contact me a few days in advance so we can arrange a pick-up. Also please feel free to bring along a spouse or friend. In addition to the free barbecue and auction we will have a raffle for members only with gift certificates and other items donated by some of our local woodworking stores. For the rest of our year Mike has scheduled Molly Winton for September, Don Derry for October and Dick Sing in November. The success of previous auctions allows us to fund these special guests, we have a wonderful last quarter planned. I hope that everyone can be a part of it. Remember to bring wood, cash or checks, an appe- tite, and plans for a entertaining evening, hope to see everyone on the 7th. Greetings fellow woodturners. I hope that everyone is having a great summer and staying busy, I know that I am. I enjoyed our July meeting night with the various turning stations and such, thanks to all who participated. I hope that you all learned something new.

Craig Taylor - Vase salvaged from Fort Vancouver's Officers’ Row

WE LOST ANOTHER GOOD FREIND Craig Taylor passed away , after a long battle with Pancreas cancer, on July 17th. Craig was an active member of NWWT for many years and a fine wood turner. He sold many of his turnings thru local craft shows and galleries. He served his coun-try as a crew member of a missile silo during the "Cold War". Craig was always proud of his service to his country.

He is survived by his daughter Kristin and two grandchildren. We will miss you old Friend. May the Lord be with you forever.

This summer we took a road trip from Hillsboro OR to Knox-ville TN to visit family and see the many sites along the long road. This is the first time we ever attempted such a journey and just my luck we (she) decided to take this trip when gas is at an all time high! So, sorry folks, I may not be bidding very much at this year’s annual wood auction as we spent the kids college fund on gas.

However, I will be bringing some “special” wood to the auc-tion that was legally obtained from Yellowstone. In addition, there were a few woodturning highlights worth mentioning. I won’t bore you with the tall tale of how we chopped down a rare hardwood in Yellowstone to defend ourselves from a grizzly bear, or bend your ear with the yarn of the tree we removed from the side of Mt. Rushmore

which resulted in half of President George Washington’s face falling off. But, I will tell you about the woodturnings we saw in the Presidential Library of William J. Clinton.

I haven’t registered De-mocrat since I was twenty-something but, the Library was just a short detour off I-40 and an even shorter step back in time.

The first vessel is by Virginia Dotson entitled Sunlight (figure 1) and is made from Ivorywood and ebony (1993). Next is the Fluted Vessel, Ascending, with Rhythmic Motion (figure 2) by Mark Lindquist (1992). Unmistakable is the Pacific Norfolk pine (Figure 3) – Translucent Wood Bowl by Ronald E. Kent (1993). Last is a very nice hollow form

Christmas tree orna-ment entitled "Hearts and Flower Petals and Peppermint," by Jack V. Wohlstadter of Rock Falls, Illinois (1996). The body is walnut crotch wood from a tree in central Illinois. The cap and finial

are tulipwood. All of these items were gifts to the Clintons while in office.

Thanks to the William J. Clinton Presidential Li-brary for permission to publish these photos in our new-letter. Maybe we should start a NWWT-Presidential library with turnings from past and future presidents?

Several days later we were in Utah, and had to stop in at Craft Supplies to “buy more wood”? The staff there was very friendly and even gave us a bonus box of wood (just right for the auction). Shortly after leaving Craft Supplies, our pop-up camper had the second tire pop-out. Know why they are called “pop-up” campers? The tires go “pop” and up goes the tire jack. I know what you’re thinking; I overloaded the poor camper with wood. I probably just left the sleeping bags and suitcases on the road to make more room for wood and tools. Well, go ahead and think what you want but, honestly! The wood was in the SUV and not the camper.

Passing through Salt Lake my wife and I had a spiritual experi-ence; we prayed and fasted. That’s right! I was driving fast, and Jill was praying “Oh God, please let us make it to the next campground in one piece.” And her prayers were an-swered as we all made it back home safe and sound.

The July meeting involved many interesting mini-demonstrations and hands on opportunities. It was a wonderful evening...and it did not even rain! Images by Andy Johnson-Laird.

Those that didn’t get to see her at the AAW Symposium in 2007 will get a second chance. On September 4,5 and 6, NWWT will host Molly Winton from Edmonds, WA. Although a relatively newcomer to demonstration turning, Molly has demon-strated through out the Northwest.

In 2007, she was a presenter at the Greater Vancouver Woodturners Guild’s West Coast Roundup Woodturning Symposium along with Richard Raffan, Bonnie Klein, John Jordan, Al Stirts, and Betty Scarpino — pretty good company for a new kid. Her work has been exhib-ited widely, including the always interesting Small Treasures Exhibition at the del Mano Gallery in Los Angeles and has appeared in American Woodturner, Wood-turning Design and even as

cover art on the Pack-ard Woodworks cata-log.

The most obvious as-pect of her work is the use of pyrography and surface augmentation to illustrate themes largely, though not exclusively, from Na-tive American sources. Drawing from Coastal, Columbia Plateau and Plains tribal images, her work captures not only a simple, almost impressionist content, but also more compellingly, a sense of motion. And as Molly points out in her several Artists Statements, everything relies on “form, form, form”. So, work at the lathe is still paramount.

Molly Winton will be demon-strating at the September 4 th NWWT club meeting. A class, limited to 8 turners, will be held Friday the 5 th 9 AM to 4 PM at Tom Reiman’s shop (fee is $100) and a seminar/demonstration will be presented Saturday the 6 th , 9AM to 4 PM, at ChemWest (fee is $30).
