#5 Dairy Select Environmental: Every great system needs a great con-trol. The VES Dairy Select is not just the computer and hardware system to run the complete VES system; it is also a management tool that allows you to review what is going on inside the barn and outside the barn. And verify that the VES system is keeping the cows cool and comfortable. Giving your cows the ideal environment will have them thanking you with improved milk production, animal health, pregnancy rates and births. The system can be easily accessed by local computer, on the internet or by your smart phone.

The air environment is only one part of a great cow comfort system, VES Environmental Solutions, LLC. doesn’t stop here. We also consider 4 more critical areas of cow comfort: Lighting, Stalls, Headlocks/Feeding along with Gates and Cow Movement.

LightingSome of the owners of VES have been designing lighting products for over 30 years. When faced with the task of providing the proper lighting, there was no one to follow. How do we bring the perfect blue sky into the barn during the day and a full moon at night? The answer to us was easy. First, lets design a wall where we can let in as much natural light as possible without letting in the heat and harmful UV rays, hence we came up with the VES Envirawall. Then we’ll design a long lasting, efficient Enviralight that duplicates the same spectrum as natural daylight and moonlight (moonlighter). By scientifically positioning these products in the building to give the proper lighting levels, tying them into the Dairy Select Control, you have a winner.

Cow ComfortWhen it comes to cow comfort many farmers have their own preferred method to bed, feed and control cow flow in their buildings. VES has a full range of stall designs and mounting systems, headlocks, gates, cow mattresses and rubber flooring. We under-stand the importance of comfort, durability, quality and longevity when it comes to these products. VES has developed a full range and also works with the famers to design custom products using the proven manufacturing components of VES.

Where does the research and knowledge of the VES Environmental Solutions, LLC. Systems come from?

By the end of 2013 we will have 5 environmental research facilities in operation. This will include a complete site in the UK, The Sychpant Farm with John & Mark Allison in Pembrokeshire Wales; Matt and Beca Fendry Organic Dairy Farm in Strum Wisconsin, 5 Star Dairy Calf and Dairy Farm with Lee Jensen in Elk Mound WI and Fetzer Farms with Paul Fetzer in Elmwood, WI.

We design solutions and have a project management team that helps install the system. Once the system is installed it get’s transferred to our research team, headed by Dr. Wolf, to make sure you get the results. There is no one like VES. So give us a call and allow us to show you how a VES system works and how we can save you money.

VES Environmental Solutions, LLC. (VES) has been asked by many people around the world, “How do you come up with your innovative ideas and designs?” The answer is simple: We look to see what the Lord has provided for his creatures of the world and then we strive to duplicate this inside the building.

We start with the most important thing: FRESH AIR. Dr. Mike Wolf, our Bio-Response Research Manager, says “Cows are inefficient breathers and providing adequate fresh air at the cow level year round is critical for animal health and production.” Next we focus the fresh air into ECV “effective cow-side velocity”. It is important not just to change the air but to direct this air where the animals eat, sleep, and live.

In the summer we use the ECV to not just deliver fresh air but to create wind speed over the animals in the summer heat and reduce the animal’s core body temperature. Now that we have created a cost effective fresh air ECV pattern over the cows, we have an option to add in our high pressure fog system. This will allow us to lower the ambient temperature around the cows from 5 to 20° F. On a 100° F day we can drop the ambient temperature to 85° F degrees, create an ECV of 7 miles per hour, so now the cows feel 78° F. At night when the temperature drops to 75° F we use the air exchange and “ECV” of 7 miles per hour to get the cows to feel 68° F. This means the core body temperature comes back to neutral and the effects of heat stress are eliminated or substantially removed.

In the winter we focus on slowing our system down, not shutting it off. We use the natural heat created by the cows, radiant heat from the ground and sunlight to keep the temperature in the building above freezing. Our system runs to the lowest settings using the least amount of power, and we continue to introduce fresh air to animals and employees through our ECV system.

FRESH AIR There are FIVE critical components of a fresh air system and only VES Environmental Solutions, LLC. knows how to design a system for you that will make them all balance together optimally. #1 Exhaust Fans or Positive Pressure Fans: Air needs to be exhausted (negative pressure) or introduced (positive pressure)

#2 Inlet or Outlet:The most misunderstood part of a ventilation system is the inlet to let the fresh air in. It is critical that the inlet/outlet is designed to have the right size opening to help with the proper distribution of air and to ensure maximum performance of the fans. Restricted air

flow through the inlet aperture means the fans cost more in energy to pull the air in. Free flowing air through the right sized inlet means the fans work at their peak efficiency.

VES Environmental Solutions LLC has gathered over 1 million pieces of data along with Research from Dr. David Kemmel from the University of Wisconsin. When we look at fans that create ECV we do not want to just look at their CFM or thrust. We want to know how effective the fan is at changing electrical energy

to air energy and focus that air energy where the cows sleep, eat and lives. It is also important to have a fan that is variable speed because the rate of “ECV” is variable depending on the time of day and year.

Based on VES data and independent research we use High Pressure Fog as our main cooling system along with soaking in the crowding area or along feed alleys (in high humidity areas)
