There are few exceptional people in this world, but Melanie Sharbono is indubitably one such person. Mrs. Sharbono's unfailing enthusiasmfor life and learning makes her students look forward to every singleschool day. She taught me so much more than cursive; she showed me that there is always something to smile about and there is so muchoutside my comfort zone that I need to explore. Her confidence in mehas always given me the courage to follow my aspirations. I am honoredto call myself her student.

Tony Smith reenergized my passion for learning, and he did it while readying me for high school. He pushed us to work hard and more efficiently. He told stories that connected to our studies and kept me interested. It was fun to learn; I looked forward to the class daily, and I became even more interested in science. We had a final in science, solely to prepare us for high school, and it worked. Mr. Smith was the reason I got an A in Honors Earth Science the next year. Ever since eighth grade, I have known he deserved thisrecognition. He made school resoundingly useful, exciting and all-around worth it.

Marianne Schadt has been a part of my high school experience since I was a freshman. Both as an English teacher and my poetry coach she has always pushed me to do better. Whether it was encouraging me to take AP courses or making me revise an essay three times, Mrs. Schadt has shaped my education and helped me get the most out of high school. Shortly after meeting Ms. Van Alstyne my sophomore year, I discoveredthe genuine zeal which she brought to class with her each day. Alwayswilling to help students, she sacrificed her time with her own family togo beyond the curriculum and provide students with an outstanding education. Her skill as a teacher, however, did not end there.Mrs. Van Alstyne’s class ignited in me the passions of exploration andcuriosity, teaching me to look at concepts from multiple angles andthrough various lenses. Without the impact of Ms. Van Alstyne, I would lack these invaluable skills.

Mrs. Dawes has a heart so big I worry it might explode. She would movemountains for any of her students, as she did for me—mountains in mylife that I could not have even budged without her. To call her simply ateacher would be a huge injustice. She encouraged me to do my best inschool, in life, and in everything I wanted for myself. Whenever I wasdown, she was right there to pick me back up with a sweet reminder ofhow awesome and capable of great things I was. To this day she neverforgets to tell me how proud of me she is. She has always known thatsometimes that can mean the world to a student. It did for me.

In the two years I’ve had Mr. Weber as a teacher, he has helped me tobecome a better student. He has taught me the importance of a goodwork ethic and renewed my excitement to become an engineer. Fromteaching me how to write code for mills, to how to build knives and fishing rods, Mr. Weber has always given me skills I can apply to reallife. No matter how badly I upset him, and as long as I was willing tolearn from my mistakes, Mr. Weber has always taken the time to teachme the correct way. The skills and knowledge Mr. Weber has given me will serve me well throughout my life.

If a magnetic personality and a desire to foster growth in his studentswere crimes, Jim Schulz would be the first to spend life in prison. His witty personality, passionate perspectives on life, and the way hisCSI class never allowed room for boredom—there are just too many entries in the encyclopedia of traits that make him the definition of aneducator. But I can thank you, Mr. Schulz, with the words of the greatFrank Sinatra, because I can say your influence will certainly “Fly Me to the Moon.”

Mr. George is my Distinguished Educator because he has gone the distance to ensure my success. Mr. George has spent countless days at lunch and after school to teach me the same things again and again,to help me understand the information at hand. He has made an enormous impact on my life, as well as my educational career. He putsthe needs of his students before his own and he has helped me achievethings that I, at one time, thought were impossible. I couldn’t thank Mr. George enough for the time and effort that he has put into my education and into my success as a student.

Mr. Pogreba is one of those once-in-a-lifetime teachers, the kind whoagain and again exceeds even the highest expectations. He transformedboth my writing style and the way that I think, always challenging me to find another intellectual gear through poignant comments and questions. The hours outside of school that he selflessly spends givingAP and ACT practice tests, as well as always being available for adviceand mentorship really set him apart. I’ve always felt like he takes a special interest in his students, both in and out of the classroom. Ms. Stoltz was my homeroom teacher for 3 years, and every day shecame to class with a smile. Stoltz was prepared to give one hundred and ten percent, and she encouraged me to do the same. She said she “didn’t do much” but she did more than she could possibly know.As I look back, four years later, her enthusiasm in class is still inspiring.I want her to know how much she means to me, and that I did this forher, as much as I did for myself.

Mrs. Edwards is the most selfless, kind, and admirable person I know. Her teaching goes so far beyond the classroom. I have been eatinglunch in her classroom since I was a freshman, along with several others, and she has been a mentor for every one of us. She has helpedus realize our potential, recognize our value, and feel more at homethan we ever have before. Because of “Edwards,” each of us can go forward in this world knowing that we are loved and we can make it.She rocks.

One may think that I chose my dad because I simply had no otherchoice. (Otherwise I might have to keep an eye out for my English grade more than I already have to!) Yet, it is because from the first day of class I have been fascinated by the hidden meanings in literary works that he exposes me to. In AP Literature, I am not only mind-blown by interpretations of text, but also intrigued by characteristics of my dad that don’t show themselves at home. For example, I learn the mechanics of a bike at home in the garage, but never has my dad burst into a reenactment of the ghost in Hamlet at the dinner table. This blend of learning makes my dad my most Distinguished Educator. He has always been my teacher. Thanks for everything, Pop!

I chose Mr. Irby as my Distinguished Educator because, throughout my four years of high school, he has taught me to do more than justcomplete assignments and take tests. Through him I have learned the importance of knowledge, and that sometimes it’s okay to be imperfect. The impact he has had on my education, as well as my life, I will hold onto and cherish forever. Thank you Mr. Irby, for helping me decide the kind of person I want to be in school, and in life.

While I may not remember a lot about kindergarten, I will never forget Mrs. Middagh. She has supported me since the day I stepped into her classroom, and for that I am eternally grateful. Throughout elementary school, she took me under her wing and gave me many experiences that I may not have gotten elsewhere. Mrs. Middagh faces each day with a smile on her face and an optimistic attitude. I look up to her now more than ever and know that she will continue to follow my future endeavors.

When I entered Beth Smaka's Montessori class as a first grader, I wasimmersed in one of the most challenging and engaging classrooms of my educational career, and I absorbed all that I could. Ms. Smaka allowed my peers and me to learn at our own pace, and cultivated in me an appreciation for struggle that I have held onto throughout myschooling. I am deeply grateful to have had her as a teacher.

Mrs. Mortieau is an exceptional individual who truly exemplifies what it means to be an educator. Far beyond the minimum requirements, she continues to grow and develop as an artist and, even more so, as a teacher. She’s a role model equipped with the kind of diligence thatinspires her students to dream and achieve without boundaries. Mrs. Mortieau is a kindhearted and compassionate mentor and friend, teaching the beauty of art while simultaneously offering guidance for the present and for the future; information that many, including me, have found priceless.

Only ever “Julie” to her students, Julie Mitchell refused to let the end of PEAK be the end of her impact on my life. From Paris, to WashingtonD.C., to her basement book club, she has shown genuine investmentin my success. Julie is the force that showed me what a real challenge is.This is the woman who empowered me to succeed and, when I did not, taught me how to make my own success. I’m sure I can never say it enough, but Julie, “Thank You.”

Mr. Deola is my Distinguished Educator for many reasons: his controlof the classroom, his engaging teaching style, and the joy he brings tohis work. In Deola’s class, there’s never been a heated argument orfight, but rather a controlled debate. Mr. Deola allows the class to civillydiscuss political issues. His upbeat and cheerful personality have madethe last year at school a little easier; he has given me a class to look forward to each day. Every Wednesday, when the Capital High chapterof the National Honor Society meets, I can’t help feeling glad that I wasone of the students to be inducted; it has been a great opportunity.

I chose Mr. Phillips as my Distinguished Educator because of the lasting effect he has had on my work ethic and self-discipline. He hasemphasized responsibility—that what I put into life is what I will get out if it. The two years he has been my teacher have also shown me thatmy future is in my own hands and hard work and self-motivation arecrucial keys to success. Each lesson that I learned from Mr. Phillips haschanged me. I will cherish the time I have spent in his classes and carrythese lessons with me throughout my life. Thank you, Mr. Phillips.

Since sophomore year, I’ve had Mr. Partridge as a teacher. This year,he’s helped me pursue one of my interests by acting as a mentor andletting me learn more about the intricacies of teaching and curriculum. In the classroom, Mr. Partridge engages his students through his obvious love for history, and that passion made my own enjoyment for history blossom. He makes history come to life by relating it to the present day, drawing maps with land walri, and displaying the horrors of World War II with “Nazi Barbie.”
