The Ireland-U.S. Council is pleased to present itsAward for Outstanding Achievement in 2016 to WillieWalsh, Chief Executive Officer of International AirlinesGroup (IAG) to mark his important contributions tobuilding business bonds between America and Ireland.Throughout his successful career, he has been a superbmanager of strategic change in an industry wherechange has become a byword.
In September 2015, IAG which includes British Airwaysand Spanish airline Iberia, purchased Aer Lingus in a$1.8 billion takeover as part of its plans to use Aer
Lingus to expand its transatlantic services via Dublin. At that time he said“Aer Lingus will remain an iconic Irish brand with its base and managementteam in Ireland but will now grow as part of a strong, profitable airline group. This means new routes and more jobs benefitting customers, employees andthe Irish economy and tourism," he said.
Willie Walsh was born in Dublin, Ireland and attended his local secondaryschool Ardscoil Rís. At age 17 he became a pilot at Aer Lingus, joining as a cadet in 1979. He earned a Master's degree in management and businessadministration from Trinity College Dublin during his pilot years, while advancing to become a Boeing 737 captain.
He joined Aer Lingus management serving in various positions and in October2001 was appointed CEO at a time when the airline was in financial difficulty.Walsh eliminated 2,000 staff positions, reduced the number of aircraft typesand sold non-core assets, including an art collection at the company headquarters. He reconfigured Aer Lingus as a low-cost airline. His turnaround recipe worked and company operating profits rebounded.
At that time, Aer Lingus was a state-owned airline. A management buyout heproposed was rejected by the Government which led to his resignation fromthe company in January 2005. He worked briefly at Virgin Atlantic but left toland the CEO job at British Airways in October 2005. In 2011, he managedthe merger of British Airways and Iberia forming a new holding companyInternational Airlines Group.
