A BRIEF HISTORY OF OUR LADY STAR OF THE SEA CHURCH
Dedicated in 1882, St. Patrick’s Cathedral located on the plot of land on North Carancahua now occupied by the American Bank
Plaza, became the Cathedral of the Diocese of Corpus Christi when the Diocese was formed in 1912. Leading contributors to
the church were Captain Miflin Kenedy, who donated land, money, and pews. Mrs. Kenedy, who donated the sanctuary
windows, and the wife of then Corpus Christi Mayor J. B. Murphy, gave the statues. The ladies of the Altar Society gave the
main altar. Various parishioners, in memory of their deceased family members, donated the other stained glass windows. As
the Diocese grew, a new cathedral was planned and was dedicated in 1940. St. Patrick’s continued to have daily Mass for the
children of Incarnate Word Academy then located nearby. In 1951, after it caught fire, the church was dismantled and the
sanctuary and main part of the nave were moved to the present location to serve the newly created “Our Lady Star of the Sea”
parish. The altar, statues and stained glass windows were saved and reinstalled in the little church. Thus a portion of the old St.
Patrick’s Cathedral remains standing, a memorial to the pioneers of Corpus Christi. Over the years, the parish has grown to
include families from all parts of Corpus Christi, Portland, Gregory, Taft, Aransas Pass and Ingleside who seek a small “country
church” atmosphere of worship and fellowship. In addition, our parishioners represent a broad cross-section of cultures and
backgrounds from various parts of the United States and a number of foreign countries.

In today’s Gospel we hear of that mysterious meeting Jesus’ disciples had with him on the shore of the Lake of Tiberius.
Jesus invited them to have breakfast with him. He took the bread and gave it to them, and the same with the fish. None
of the disciples were bold enough to ask: “Who are you?” They realized it was the risen Lord. Those who practice good
stewardship of their life of faith are touched by joy and moved by deep awe when encountering Christ in the celebration
of the Eucharist. How do you experience the mysterious presence of Jesus in the Eucharist? Do you recognize his pres-
ence? Do you hear the Lord’s invitation to draw nearer? Do you experience a closeness, or a reserve? A familiarity, or
a distance? Retrieved from: catholicstewardship.com
We Are Glad You Joined Us This Weekend There is much to digest (literally) in today’s Gospel Reading from St.
John. It reports the third time that Jesus appeared to His Apostles.
The Lord appears on the shore of the Sea of Tiberius, which is another
name by which the Sea of Galilee is known. It is early in the morning,
and Peter and the others had been fishing unsuccessfully, and
obviously were near to the shore, but at Jesus’ urging they cast their
nets again and caught many fish, which they then brought to shore.
According to the Gospel Jesus had breakfast with them, and then He
poses the question to Peter specifically, “Do you love me?” The
exchange between the Lord and Peter is carefully narrated, as are
Jesus’ responses. However, at the end of the Gospel Reading for today,
Jesus says two simple words to Peter, “Follow Me.” Of course, these
are the same two words with which we are familiar that Jesus used to
call Peter and the others in the beginning.
We need to understand that these instructions from Jesus are not just for the Apostles but for us as well. How have we
responded to that call? Our reaction does not have to be as dramatic as Peter’s and the others, who abandoned their
lives and their livelihood and became total followers of Christ. However, we, too, need to find the strength and the
commitment to follow the Lord. How we carry that out is our stewardship, how we live our lives.

Sunday’s readings:
Acts 5: 27-32, 40-41: Better for us to obey God than human beings.
Rev 5: 11-14: You could not count those who sang out in praise of God.
Jn 21: 1-19: If you love me, feed my sheep.
The Easter Season is actually from Easter Sunday to Pentecost — 50 days! It is celebrated in joyful exultation as one feast day, or better, as one “great Sunday”. These above all others are the days for the singing of the Alleluia.
CHRIST 101: A Complete Guide to Defending the Christian Faith Using Reason and Evidence will be facilitated by
Richard and Linda Reinhart on Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. in the parish hall. This is a semester long, multimedia
course specifically designed to defend traditional “old-school” Orthodox Christianity to the modern secular
world. For more information, visit the OLSS website or call Richard at 361-774-9102.
Online Giving Available! We are excited to announce that Our Lady Star of the Sea now accepts one-time and recurring
donations conveniently from our website. You can make your secure donation via electronic check or debit/credit card by
simply visiting olsscc.org and clicking on the quick link “GIVING/DONATION” at the top of the page.
Please be careful when walking in front of the church. Causeway Blvd. runs directly in front of the church and blends with the parking lot. An unsuspecting parishioner could be walking in front of the church and not realize that motorists are driving along the road.
