A BRIEF HISTORY OF OUR LADY STAR OF THE SEA CHURCH
Dedicated in 1882, St. Patrick’s Cathedral located on the plot of land on North Carancahua now occupied by the American Bank
Plaza, became the Cathedral of the Diocese of Corpus Christi when the Diocese was formed in 1912. Leading contributors to
the church were Captain Miflin Kenedy, who donated land, money, and pews. Mrs. Kenedy, who donated the sanctuary
windows, and the wife of then Corpus Christi Mayor J. B. Murphy, gave the statues. The ladies of the Altar Society gave the
main altar. Various parishioners, in memory of their deceased family members, donated the other stained glass windows. As
the Diocese grew, a new cathedral was planned and was dedicated in 1940. St. Patrick’s continued to have daily Mass for the
children of Incarnate Word Academy then located nearby. In 1951, after it caught fire, the church was dismantled and the
sanctuary and main part of the nave were moved to the present location to serve the newly created “Our Lady Star of the Sea”
parish. The altar, statues and stained glass windows were saved and reinstalled in the little church. Thus a portion of the old St.
Patrick’s Cathedral remains standing, a memorial to the pioneers of Corpus Christi. Over the years, the parish has grown to
include families from all parts of Corpus Christi, Portland, Gregory, Taft, Aransas Pass and Ingleside who seek a small “country
church” atmosphere of worship and fellowship. In addition, our parishioners represent a broad cross-section of cultures and

There Will Be A Second Collection This Weekend
Catholic Communications Campaign
Today we celebrate the feast of the Ascension of our Lord, a feast which, in part, celebrates the confidence he placed in his
close followers to continue his ministry. In the Gospel reading Jesus reminds his followers of the purpose of his mission, and
commissions them to continue his work by proclaiming his word and by living courageously that which they preached. He
also promises them the Holy Spirit who he said would strengthen them for the task ahead. As stewards of Jesus’ life and
ministry, a good question for us to reflect on this week might be this: Has Christ’s confidence in the quality of our own
witness been well placed? Retrieved from: catholicstewardship.com
Lord, we ask You to bless all who are sick. Give
them strength in body, courage in spirit, and
patience in pain. Let them recover their health
that they may joyfully praise your name. Amen
We Are Glad You Joined Us This Weekend On this Seventh Sunday of Easter, most Catholics in the United States also celebrate the
Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. Traditionally, Ascension Thursday occurred 40
days after Easter (May 5 this year); however, most dioceses in the U.S. have transferred
this Holy Day of Obligation to the Sunday following it, which this year is today.
Christ’s Ascension is important to us. It is one of our core beliefs, to the extent that when
we profess our faith at Mass, regardless which Creed we use, we declare, “He ascended
into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.” To deny Christ’s Ascension is
to deny His Resurrection. Before His Ascension, which is described in our First Reading
from the Acts of the Apostles, Jesus tells His followers, “…you will be baptized with the
Holy Spirit.”
We, too, have been baptized and imbued with the Holy Spirit. This Third Member of the
Holy Trinity is the aspect of God that lives and empowers each of us. We may think that
the Holy Spirit has more work to do among those who do not believe, but there is also
considerable work to be done among those of us who do believe. We are called to serve;
we are called to discipleship; we are called to lives of stewardship; we are reminded of
that in all of today’s readings.
In his homily on the Ascension of Christ last year, Pope Francis said, “The Ascension tells us He is with
God the Father, where He always intercedes in our favor.” http://www.catholicsteward.com
The Readings:
Acts 1:1-11 They receive the Holy Spirit who empowers them to be faithful witnesses “to the ends of the earth.” Do we stand
“looking up into the heavens,” or do we recognize that we have work to do until Christ returns?
Hebrews 9:24-28; 10:19 -23 Jesus' risen state is that of a new high priest. Standing in the true sanctuary, he is the once-for-all
offering that also gives us admittance to that sanctuary.
Lk 24:46-53 Jesus appoints the disciples, and us, as witnesses to his life, death, and resurrection. http://www.churchofepiphany.com
