A BRIEF HISTORY OF OUR LADY STAR OF THE SEA CHURCH

Dedicated in 1882, St. Patrick’s Cathedral located on the plot of land on North Carancahua now occupied by the American

Bank Plaza, became the Cathedral of the Diocese of Corpus Christi when the Diocese was formed in 1912. Leading

contributors to the church were Captain Miflin Kenedy, who donated land, money, and pews. Mrs. Kenedy, who donated

the sanctuary windows, and the wife of then Corpus Christi Mayor J. B. Murphy, gave the statues. The ladies of the Altar

Society gave the main altar. Various parishioners, in memory of their deceased family members, donated the other stained

glass windows. As the Diocese grew, a new cathedral was planned and was dedicated in 1940. St. Patrick’s continued to

have daily Mass for the children of Incarnate Word Academy then located nearby. In 1951, after it caught fire, the church

was dismantled and the sanctuary and main part of the nave were moved to the present location to serve the newly created

“Our Lady Star of the Sea” parish. The altar, statues and stained glass windows were saved and reinstalled in the little

church. Thus a portion of the old St. Patrick’s Cathedral remains standing, a memorial to the pioneers of Corpus Christi.

Over the years, the parish has grown to include families from all parts of Corpus Christi, Portland, Gregory, Taft, Aransas

Pass and Ingleside who seek a small “country church” atmosphere of worship and fellowship. In addition, our parishioners

represent a broad cross-section of cultures and backgrounds from various parts of the United States and a number of

foreign countries.

“Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.”

— John 20:29b

THANK YOU FOR JOINING US HERE THIS WEEKEND. GET REAL!

Those of us who flatter ourselves that we have a “realistic” view of the world may listen to the first reading today and say, “Get real!” when we hear Luke’s account of the early, Elysian days of the Christian movement. All seems to be rosy, lots of wonders are performed, everyone shares selflessly, they eat together in “exultation,” and the Lord added to their numbers? Well, who wouldn’t be at-tracted to a group like this? From the wind that swept through the upper room at Pentecost as the Spirit of God blew over the face of the waters in Genesis, and the fire that appeared over each disciple as the light appeared at the dawn of creation, Luke’s intent in Acts is to show a new creation, a restoration of creation’s original goodness through the working of the Holy Spirit. It is the Spirit who continues to make us into the Body of Christ. We may occa-sionally, like Thomas in the Gospel, say, “Get real!” but our ultimate reality in the Spirit is to work continually to make our Christian community a new creation, one in which oth-ers will find God’s joy and beauty

Divine Mercy Prayer

You expired, O Jesus,

but the source of life gushed forth for souls

and an ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world.

O Fount of Life,

unfathomable Divine Mercy,

envelop the whole world

and empty Yourself out upon us.

O Blood and Water,

which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus

as a fount of mercy for us,

I trust in You.

Amen.
