INTRODUCTION

Following a lull (1959-1960) in publication of introductory college geography textbooks, no

less than thirty-two texts including twenty-five entirely new publications have appeared since

1960.1 The same number appeared in the previous f:en years (1951-1960), but this included only

fourteen completely new editions. Only two dozen such books were published from 1940 through

1950, and just seven could be considered first editions. Thus, in the last five years more than

half of the newly authored introductory geography textbooks published since 1940 have appeared.2

Introductory college textbooks frecrently become basic references in their fields for many

teachers and teachers-to-be, especially in prAmary and secondary schools. Geography teachers who

are non-geographers, including some instructors at the junior college level, probably read little

from philosophical and methodological studies by geographers.3 New textbooks continue to appear

and old textbooks are often revised so that relatively new ideas are available on a student

1ev21. Some of the survey textbooks develop well the discussion of principles of geography.

The purposes of presenting a topical bibliography of introductory college geography text-

books published during the pAst quarter century are several:

I. At the college level

a. To assist busy teachers--especially part-time instructors and non-geographero--in

comparing textbooks and selecting them for courses.

b. To assist teachers and administrators--especially in small colleges (liberal arts,

community, or junior colleges)--to plan anci to introduce a geography course with a

better idea of what to expect for student use.

1The thirty-two texts include seven classified ae economic geography but do not include

others published as specialized, i.e. political geography or Anglo-America.

2Several popular textbooks have been revised from one tc four times during this same period.

3All teachers and future teachers of geography should be familiar with some of the recent

summary statements about geography. The following writings speak to the geography teacher and

provide useful bibliographical references to other specialized statements: Preston E. James

(ed.), New Viewpoints in GesEa2ty (Twenty-Ninth Yearbook of the National Council l'or the Social

Studies), Washington, 1959; Wilhelmina Hill (ed.), Curriculum Guide for Geographic Education

(Geographic Education Series No. 3), Normal, Illinois, National Council. for Geographic Education,

1964; Preston E. James, "Geography," in The Social Studies and the Social Sciences (sponsored by

the American Council for Learned Societies snd the National Council for the Social Studies), New

York, Harcourt, Brace and World, 1962, pp. 42-87; Geography in Undergraduate Liberal Education

(A Report of the Geography in Liberal Education Project), Washington, Association of American

Geographers, 1965; Neville V. Scarfe, Geography.in School (Geographic Education Series No. 5),

Normal, Illinois, National Council for Geographic Education, 1965.

Page 8: A Bibliographical Summary. INSTITUTION Illinois State Univ ... · order by author for cross reference. ... Ferris State College Big Rapids ... 3 New textbooks continue to appear and

2. At the primary and secondary level

a. To provide teachers with an updated list of textbooks which may assist them in their

course planning and preparation.

b. To indicate to secondary teachers and administrators the type of materials which

have been and are being presented in introductory college geography courses.

3. To assist librarians in recognizing the various types of textbooks useful to persons

seeking a survey of geography.

4. To provide a systematic record of textbooks according to major course emphases.

Despite inherent weaknesses, many geography textbooks have presented well the synthesil of

principles and important facts in the field. Some have pioneered new approaches toward the

organization of introductory college courses. Some have become old "stand-bys" or "classics." in

the field. It would be valuable if students and teachers could examine critically several types

of course textbooke, both past and currant. For the school teacher whose college preparation in

geography may have been "in the distant past", reference to several recent teNtbooks may help to

clevify changing approaches and emphases as witness the increased interest in world culture

regions or the rise in quantitative measurements of earth phenomena.

ORGANIZATION OF THE BIBLIOGRAPHY

As indicated in the Directory of College Geography,1 the approaches to introductory college

geography are numerous including courses entitled "Introductory Geography", "Principles of

Geography", "Elements of Geography", "Human Geography", "Physical Geography", "World Geography",

or 'Wrld Regional Geography". Often college students get their first and only geography in an

apparently more specialized course such as "Economic Geography", "Political Geography", or

"Geography of Anglo-America". These selected course titles imply both systematic (topical)

organization aud regional organivation. While it is generally agreed by geographers that neither

approach can exist without the ottmr, some teachers or some departments may favor a particular

o.ganizational emphasis for their course in introduction to college geography.

The bibliography is organized topically as follows to show the variety of textbook mphases:

GENERAL INTRODUCTORY TEXTBOOKS (SYSTEMATIC AND REGIONAL)

All introductory textt-loke--including a few entitled "Economic Geography"--which examine at

length fundamental aspects of physical and human geography are listed in alphabetical order by

author. The alphabetical list includes the full title, the abbreviated name of publisher, and

the date of each separate edition. Topical listings are given chronologically by author name

only; complete reference can be obtained from the alphabetical listing. Because major parts of

some textbooke are often used separately in a course--e.g. physical, cultural, or world

regional--these are included in the respective topical bibliography.

SPECIALIZED TEXTBOOKS USED FOR AN INTRODUCTION TO GEOGRAPHY

Apart from the previously mentioned introductory textbooks, at least three specialized types

are used frequently in first courses in college geography: economic geography, political

geography, and the geography of Anglo-America. Most textbooks in these areas of study are also

used for advanced courses, many of which require a prerequisite in geography or junior standing.

Among the economic geography texts available today, the approaches range from those which

emphasize a world survey of commodity production to those which dwell heavily upon methods and

principles. The study of political geography, while possibly being a student's only exposure to

geography, is often available only to upper division students. The geography of Anglo-America is

very frequently taught on a sophomore level and in junior colleges.

ECONOMIC GEOGRAPR TEXTBOOKS

In economic geography, the emphasis upon occupational types and commodity production is

strong, the majority of textbooks being organized around one of these themes or some combination

of the two. No textbook since that by Whitbeck and Finch (1941) has been organized by major

world regions. However, while the emphases vary, no approaches are mutually exclusive. In the

last few years, greater emphasis has been placed upon the geographical aspects of a modern

urban-industrial economy in contrast to the well-developed theme of agricultural production and

its climatic-vegetational relationships. Finally, economic geography textbooks differ

considerably in their depth of analysis 60 that some are less suitable than others for freshmen-

oriented introductory courses. A few of these textbooks were previously listed with general

introductory geography textbooks.

POLITICAL GEOGRAPHY TEXTBOOKS

Political geography is seldom taught as a lower division course even in the several colleges

in which the course can be taken without prerequisite.1

However, because political geography may

be the only systematic geography course which some students will ever take, the textbooks are

included in this bibliography. Textbook organization varies from the topical to the world

regional, and in same (Ages includes a mixture of both approaches.

GEOGRAPHY OF ANGLO-AMERICA OR U.S. AND CANADA TEXTBOOKS

Many students receive a first and only geography course in one focusing upon the United

States and Canada. Among major world regions, Anglo-America is perhaps the most logical to teach

first. In any case, such a course is commonly taught without a prerequisite and is offered at a

lower division level in a great number of colleges and universities. The availability of

up-to-date textbooks is somewhat limited unless one considers also several recent British text-

books which are obtainable from North American distributors. The British books deserve some

consideration.

GENERAL ATLASES

A selected bibliography is given for recent editions of general atlases which are useful as

supplementary textbook material for students in geography courses. Many of these current

atlases, ranging in price from $0.70 to about $9.00, have gone through multiple editions.

Several of the atlases listed are of British origin but are usually available in American

editions. For example, atlases edited by John Bartholomew have been published by several

companies in both Britain and the United States. Among the atlases prepared in the United

States, the best known student atlas is Goode's World Atlas (Rand McNally)--first published in

1923 as Goode's School Atlas and now in its 12th edition. A recent competitor to the Goode's

atlas is the Prentice-Hall World Atlas (1958 and 1963). Where cost is a major factor, Hammond's

Comparative Atlas ($0.70) has been widely used for about twenty years.
