Introduction

This bibliography is designed to assist those researching Civil War veterans and units in New York State outside of Erie County. While it omits regiments that were formed partly or mostly of Erie County men, it does include several statewide sources, such as Union censuses and genealogical databases, that include all counties. Please note that there are separate handouts for these topics:

Civil War Genealogy & History for Buffalo & Erie County Civil War Genealogy & History for States Other Than New York

All Grosvenor Room guides can be found here:

http://www.buffalolib.org/content/grosvenor/guides-publications Our collection includes indexes and muster rolls of soldiers who served in the Union and Confederate armies, numerous regimental histories, Civil War research handbooks, pension file indexes, and other sources which list servicemen from New York State. Nearly everything listed here can be found in the Grosvenor Room (GRO). Material in the Grosvenor Room does not circulate and cannot be removed from the room. For titles from the Closed Stacks, please see a librarian for assistance. In a few cases, there are extra copies of these books that can be borrowed from the Non-Fiction Department. Books are listed in call number order. Shelf locations are always subject to change.
