The Lochcarron Treehouse is a unique venue at the Smithy Heritage Centre, Lochcarron. Designed by Alex Shirley-Smith it was built by the community over a period of 5 days and filmed for a documentary. The treehouse accommodates 15 people and is heated by a wood burning stove. IV54 8YS
Reay Parish Church has been designated as a Category A listed building. It was built in 1739 and has a ‘T’ shaped plan. The pulpit is located in the centre of the long wall with pews positioned to the east and west facing towards each other. The north wing was sectioned off in the 1950s to form a vestry. In 1989 the Queen Mother visited the church to celebrate its 250th anniversary. KW14 7RE
The Lime Kilns and pier at Ard Neackie on the east bank of Loch Eriboll were built in the early 1870’s to serve the local quarry. Lime was widely used for construction and agricultural purposes. Comprising two pairs of oval-section kilns, the southern pair has semicircular draw arches whilst the northern pair has segmental draw arches.
Designed by Gökay Deveci for the ceramic artist, Lotte Glob, the house consists of a large multi-purpose, double-height space, overlooking Loch Eriboll, which can be transformed into an exhibition gallery when required. The Sculpture Croft and studio are open by appointment. IV27 4UN
Strathnaver Museum is housed in the former parish church of Columba in Bettyhill which played a central role in the story of Scotland’s clearances. The pulpit, which has been preserved, was used to deliver the eviction notices and later where crofters gave evidence to the Napier Commission. The musuem is open from April to October. KW14 7SS
Designed by Law Dunbar Naysmith, the timber framed and clad boathouse is a surprising find on the remote road from Tongue to Lairg. It sits under a heavy turf clad roof on the bank of Loch Loyal and houses the estate fishing boats.
Melvich Ice House is an early 19th century, large tall cylindrical rubble ice house built into hillside overlooking the River Halladale. It hasa conical turf roof with a ramp leading to the wallhead ice chute. Although not accessible it can been seen from the road. KW14 7YJ
Built in 1958 by PH Hyslop Strathy Point Lighthouse was the first all-electric lighthouse in Scotland. The square lighthouse tower is surrounded by a rectangular enclosure to protect it from the elements. Now decomissioned, the buildings have been converted into private homes with spectacular views over the Pentland Firth. KW14 7RY
The Strathpeffer Pavillion was built in 1880 to provide a social focus for the area. It lay derelict from 1970s to 1996 when ownership passed to the Scottish Historic Buildings Trust. Architects Law Dunbar and Nasmith were subsequently commissioned to carry out a full programme of conservation and conversion works returning the Strathpeffer pavilion to its former glory. IV14 9DW
2Ullapool Museum is housed in a Grade A listed former church built in 1829 under the direction of chief surveyor engineer Thomas Telford. Commissioned following an Act of Parliament, 32 churches were constructed throughout the Highlands of Scotland, all to the same design. Of the eleven which survive, Ullapool is believed to be the most complete. IV26 2TY
Larch House at Ormiscaig in Aultbea was designed by the Skye based architectural practice, Dulchas, to follow traditional proportions and form. It is low-lying, narrow in span and set on a ground bearing slab to retain a familiar and discreet profile. The corner window affords a panoramic view over the landscape. IV22 2JJ
5 6Designed by Moira and Moira Architects in the 1970s, the Torridon Youth Hostel sits at the foot of the Torridon hills overlooking Liathach. The cluster of harled cottage-like blocks contain utilitarian style dormitaries and provide welcome shelter for walkers and holiday makers. IV22 2EZ
3 4Treetop House and Stonehouse Cottages are situated on a steep slope overlooking the village of Ullapool. Designed by architect, Stuart Bagshaw, the houses cling to the hillside; one up amongst the trees and the other on a rocky edge. The clients brought together local crafts people & artisans utilising traditional building techniques with modern design and environmental considerations. IV26 2UN
7 8 109Designed by Iain Livesley the Community Arts Building provides a multifunction studio within the grounds of Glencanisp Lodge. The main structure is built from roundwood logs, prepared & jointed by log-builder Henry Fosbrooke. The log structure encloses a series of interlocking ‘modules’ which were prefabricated & delivered to site. IV27 4LW
11The Hermits Castle was designed and built by Architect David Scott in 1950. This single space, solid concrete retreat sits on a rocky outcrop. The structure includes a bed platform, hearth and storage shelves. Now abandoned it is a curious and thoroughly uplifting discovery on an expedition from Achmelvich Beach. IV27 4JB
12The GALE centre, designed by Neil Sutherland Architects, provides community facilities for Gairloch and Loch Ewe. The building is built to passivhaus standard which means it is very energy efficeint. It is predominantly constructed from locally grown untreated timber. The large area of glazing harnesses passive solar gain, whilst capturing the stunning views over Loch Gairloch. IV21 2BH
This tiny black corrugated house built in the township of Clashnessie, north of Lochinver, was designed by Dulchas Architects. It has a large living space with sliding doors which overlook the beach and a picture window framing westerly views out to sea. The form is influenced by the local architecture which includes the stone and corrugated agricultural sheds.
13Balnakeil House was built c1744 by the Mackay chiefs as a family mansion. In 1829 it was inherited by the Marquis of Stafford, later known as the Duke of Sutherland. It was purchased by the Elliot family in 1904 and remains in their ownership. In 2012 was refubished by Anta Architects and features bespoke interiors and furniture. IV27 4PX
16The Kylesku Bridge, designed by the legendary structural engineer, Ove Arup, was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1984. Spanning 276m, the curved form allows spectacular views of the elegant concrete structure from both sides of the Kyle. A well positioned layby on the north of the kyle provides an ideal opportunity to view the structure.
15The Kylesku Hotel, situated in the Assynt Coigach National Scenic Area, was transformed by Helen Lucas Architects in 2014. The new guest accommodation and restaurant extension enhance the connection to the landscape through carefully positioned additions. The picture window which overlooks the jetty thoughtfully frames views of the catch of the day being landed. IV27 4HW
14Two interesting holiday homes have been built at Croft 103, Laid, by Carbonlite Design & Build. Completed in 2011, both buildings were prefabricated and delivered to site in sections where they were assembled and externally finished in locally sourced stone. The curved metal roofs are just visable from the main road. IV27 4UN

Laidhay is a two hundred year old rush thatched Caithness longhouse just north of Dunbeath, and is a typical example of the older style of Caithness croft dwellings which were a familiar feature of the agricultural landscape prior to the improvements of the 18th and 19th centuries. KW6 6EY
Built some 5000 years ago, the Grey Cairns of Camster are two of the best preserved Neolithic chambered cairns in the Britain. Located on a windswept moor in the Caithness ‘Flow Country’, one forms a circular structure some 18m in diameter, while the other sprawls along a ridge line for just under 70m.
29 30Dunrobin Castle, originally built by Freskyne in the 14th Century was extensively remodeled in 1841 by Sir Charles Barry in a mixture of Scottish Castle and French Chateau style for the 2nd Duke of Sutherland. In 1915-21 Sir Robert Lorimer redesigned some of the public rooms and added an ogee dome to the clock tower. KW10 6SF
